Video: Michelle Obama Visits Village in Botswana, is Offered Deep Fried Fat Cakes and French Fries
U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama visited a small village in Botswana with her daughters Malia and Sasha. She asked to sample some local food, so she was shown to a local restaurant which offered her French fries and Magwinya, better known as deep fried fat cakes. Michelle just came from South Africa where she talked about the importance of healthy eating and exercise -- she even did pushups with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, so you know the last thing she wants to do is chow down on fried food with a side order of french fries with her daughters. But as a visiting first lady, she had to be polite. So she used an old politicians' trick: she purchased the food to go.
The restaurant boxed up the food and handed it to her. Watch Michelle's face when she sees all the fried food -- then watch the teenager's face light up as she is handed a box of forbidden fries. We somehow doubt Malia got to eat many of those fat cakes. The press is already making snide remarks about Michelle and the fat cakes, but we think she handled the sudden onslaught of unwanted fried food with aplomb. Take a look:
