Vegetarians beware: Veggie Patch has recalled two products due to contamination from Listeria monocytogenes. The products affected are
The Ultimate Meatless Burger and Falafel.
The organism Listeria monocytogenes causes mild to life-threatening infections. The infection is especially serious in young
children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Pregnant women can miscarry if they get the disease and stillbirths are also a possibility.
According to the FDA's press release, the specific products being recalled are:
- 9-ounce trays of refrigerated, fully cooked, Veggie Patch, The Ultimate Meatless Burger with a Use-By date, Jan/12/2013; UPC code 6-10129-00211-5 (which can be found on back of package)
- 9-ounce trays of refrigerated, fully cooked, Veggie Patch, Falafel with a Use-By date, Jan/15/2013; UPC code 6-10129-06619-3 (which can be found on back of package)
The FDA says that The Ultimate Meatless Burger potentially affected was available for sale as of November 21, 2012, in the following states; NY, CT, PA, FL, IL, MD, IN, WI, VA, NJ and DE. Falafel potentially affected, was available for sale as of November 21, 2012, nationwide.
So far no one has been reported as becoming ill. The contamination was discovered by Veggie Patch during routine testing. If you purchased these products, throw them out -- do not consume them.
