Mastadon Skeleton Up for Auction on Ebay

Mastadon Ebay AuctionThe San Francisco Chronicle reports that a three million year old mastadon skeleton is up for sale on eBay. A family has kept the enormous mastadon skeleton in their garage for years. You can see the auction listing here.
Nancy Fiddler is cleaning out her garage in Sebastopol these days, which is the thing to do if your garage has a mastodon in it.

Not just any mastodon, but a full-grown one. It's among the finest examples of a fossilized mastodon in North America, and certainly the finest example of one in a Sebastopol garage.

Fiddler wants it gone. It's been in the family for 11 years, and that's long enough for the relationship to have run its course.

"This," she said, pointing to the creature that fills half the garage, "was something we felt we could let go of."
So far there haven't been any bids at all but it could be because the starting price is $115,000.
The mastodon ad began running last week. Since then, the number of bids has remained constant. There were none on Friday, none over the weekend and, as of Monday night, the running total was zero.

It could be the asking price. Fiddler set the minimum opening bid at $115,000. She figures the thing to be worth $800,000, but she is not the first person to discover that a precious family heirloom is perhaps worth less than the adoring family figured.
Mastadon bones have appeared on eBay before but a valuable complete skeleton like this one is very unusual. If someone does purchase this enormous skeleton they will have to pick it up themselves. Shipping is not included. (via Boing Boing)

Jesus Driveway Smudge Sells for Over $1,500

Jesus Driveway Smudge The Guardian reports that a patch of oil on a driveway with a little resemblance to Jesus Christ has sold for over $1,500 on eBay.
The family has now hired a contractor to remove the section of concrete.

The slab will then be delivered to the winner of the online auction, who is identified only as "islandoffthecoast."

An active Lutheran, Ms Serio considers the smudge a slightly odd occurrence, rather than a divine sign or miracle.

"There are some people who need this kind of thing to sort of start them on their faith journey. I don't," she said.

"That's why I don't mind parting with it."
$1,500 is pretty good for a tiny section of a driveway. Too bad the rest of the driveway isn't worth nearly as much.

Ebay Listing Offers Iraq War Solution

Iraq War Solution on EbayAn eBay entry (via AFP) claims to offer the solution to the Iraq War. The auction was put there by someone claiming to be a Military Intelligence officer in the United States Army with an extensive background in the Middle East. Here is what the auction listing's description says.
I am offering the winning bidder the solution to the war in Iraq. This is not a flippant or facetious offer. There will be no joke forwarded to you if you are the winning bidder. If you are the high bidder, I will send you a viable solution to the conflict in which we are currently engaged. I am a Military Intelligence officer in the United States Army with an extensive background in the Middle East. I speak the language and understand the culture, history, and religion, well enough to construct a fair, honorable, and successful plan. I have spent time in Iraq as an enlisted intelligence Soldier during Desert Storm in 1991 and as an intelligence officer during this latest action.

I have been involved in the planning of over 400 combat operations and have personally participated in over 300 combat operations that ranged from terrorist cell take-downs to single-handed arms market raids. I do not lack courage or the ability to act.

I have headed humanitarian efforts that varied from toy drives to bridge building to educational support. I do not lack heart or the ability to feel.

My passion for this solution is genuine and my zeal is not misdirected. I do not demonize any group for the actions of a few but neither do I deify any group in some misguided attempt to show my open-mindedness. I have grieved for lost friends, both American and Iraqi, military and civilian. This war is not a concept, a philosophy, or a political agenda to me. It is a highly personal issue that I have applied an objective detachment to in order to arrive at a logical conclusion.

This war has currently cost us somewhere around FOUR HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS and over 3500 American lives. My buy it now price of five million seems perfectly reasonable by comparison. I'm not even asking you to risk your life. Unfortunately, sometimes it seems that the most valuable things in life are the least valued. For this reason I am starting the bidding at only one dollar. Just to sweeten the pot a little, I will not only send you the solution but I will also make myself available to you for two hours to further explain my solution and answer any possible questions that you may have. (Transportation costs are the sole responsibility of the winning bidder if they choose to exercise this option.) If you work for a senator or congressman or a possible presidential hopeful, maybe you should get everyone at the office to chip in and purchase my solution for them. Some of them might even be able to foot the bill themselves.
The highest bid for the item has passed the $1,000 mark. There have been 54 bids so far.

20-Story Building For Sale on Ebay

Herald TowerThe International Herald Tribune reports that a 20-story building is up for sale on eBay. The building is the Heritage Tower and Dome Center in Battle Creek, MI. It was built in 1931.
The listing touts the 149,000-square-foot (13,843-sq. meter) structure's selling points, including its cathedral-like common area on the second floor, now used for special events; a 34-car, underground parking garage; and retail and office space on the ground floor. It is accompanied by 12 exterior and interior photos of the building.

Dore suggests that with some remodeling, it could house condominiums.

The auction's fine print makes it clear that the winning bid will not necessarily translate into a change of ownership for the building.

"By participating, you are not entering into a contract to purchase this property," a disclaimer on the listing says. "You are, however, expressing serious interest in the property and in pursuing contract discussions."
You can find the auction listing here. Bids start at $1.5 million.

Woman Auctions All Her Belongings on eBay

Everything Perry OwnsA woman has put everything she owns up for auction on eBay in one big listing called Everything Perry Owns. The L.A. Times says the 45-year-old lawyer describes herself as a pack rat. The winning bidders must come to her apartment, box up her stuff and take it away.
"I've always wanted to just get up and go," said Perry, who plans to move to California in June in search of work and a warmer climate. "Some of my family are worried about my sanity.

"I don't need all this junk. Who wouldn't want to chuck everything and hit the road?"

At first, she planned to donate a portion of the proceeds to charity. But when her original effort last week violated EBay's rules for charity listings, the company pulled the auction. Perry re-listed her auction as a straight sale and hopes to later donate money to a favorite charity, Heifer International.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were only nine bids and a top offer of $566.66. But more than 1,000 curious shoppers have virtually sifted through her stuff. Perry said she's also received hundreds of e-mails from people who learned about the auction from news reports and are praising her for opting for a life of "voluntary simplicity."
The eBay listing has a long list of some of the items Perry owns and has put up for auction. They include a wide variety of stuff including refrigerator magnets, clothes, books, clothers, candle holders and even a milk crate full of seashells from the east coast. Bidding will end on April 15th. There have been ten bids so far with the higest bid being $710.00.

JFK Sniper Window Climbs to $3 Million on eBay but Sale Falls Apart

JFK Sniper PerchThe BBC reports that someone bought the window and frame that John F Kennedy was shot from for $3 million on an eBay auction. The BBC says the auction started at $100,000 and climbed rapidly.
An item described as the window and frame from where Lee Harvey Oswald shot US President John F Kennedy in 1963 has been sold at auction on eBay.

A mystery bidder paid more than $3m (£1.5m) for the item, apparently from Oswald's shooter's nest at the Texas Schoolbook Depository.

The starting price was just $100,000 but bidding was brisk and the item eventually fetched $3,001,501.
That's a lot of money to pay for such a weird item. The BBC also says there are some who believe the bidders were being "hoodwinked." As it turns out the buyer was not able to come up with the cash and the deal fell apart. More photographs of the item can be found on the eBay auction listing page while it lasts.

Buy MySpace Friends on eBay

Someone is selling their MySpace account with over 100,000 friends on eBay. You can see the auction listing here. The seller claims to have over 100,000 friends on a MySpace profile they started over four years ago.
Why are you selling your Account?
I started this account 4 years ago when MySpace first started. I have used it as my personal account but I am now in need of a little extra cash and my friends suggested that I sell my account so I thought I'd give it a shot. Why should I buy this Account? If you are into MySpace you know an account with over 100k friends is VERY rare. Now to own a MySpace account with over 100k friends, a low ID, and an unset URL is unheard of. If you do not bid on this account you will probably never find another one like this! This account gives you an instant customer base. Depending on the product you sell you should make back the money spent on this auction very soon.
This is not the only MySpace account auction taking place. There are currently 29 auctions going on for MySpace accounts. Several of these accounts claim to have over 20,000 or 30,000 friends.

Students Bid for Tuition on Ebay

USA Today is reporting that Oklahoma Wesleyan University has placed a year of tuition up for auction on eBay.
One student next term at Oklahoma Wesleyan University may have paid a lot less for tuition than his or her classmates.

The university on Saturday kicked off an eBay auction of a year of tuition, room and board at the private college. The bidding had reached $4,425 by 11 p.m.

Bidders can buy the tuition for themselves or someone else. Among the bidders will be current students at the school, which has an enrollment of about 1,030 students.

A year of tuition, room and board at Oklahoma Wesleyan costs about $23,000. The bidding will be open through Saturday.

"I think it's a really neat idea," junior Emily Wright said. "I don't know why anybody wouldn't bid."
If this does well maybe it will become a trend. The winning bidder will still have to meet the school's minimum education requirements -- you can't bid your way out of that.

Update 2-15-07: The winning bidder saved some money paying $18,669.99 for a year of tuition, room and board at OWU.

Snow From Colorado Blizzards on Ebay

Colorado SnowThe Associated Press reports that a Colorado resident is selling snow on eBay from both of the recent Colorado blizzards. The starting bids for the snow listed as "Blizzard I and Blizzard II" were 99 cents.
As if Colorado residents don't have enough snow to dig out from, one resident is offering more for a price on eBay. Starting bids were holding steady Friday at 99 cents for snow from "Blizzard I and Blizzard II" being offered by Mary Walker. She and husband, Jim, got the idea for selling snow after shoveling mounds from two storms a week apart that together dumped more than 4 feet along the Front Range.

"I figured eBay has ghosts and all sorts of weird stuff, so why not snow?" said Walker, who teaches business workshops on employee communications.

How much snow 99 cents or whatever the winning bid gets depends. Walker's auction notice suggests avoiding shipping and handling charges by stopping by their home and picking it up -- in a dump truck.

Only 10 offerings of snow are available and the proceeds are earmarked for a used snowblower for Jim or a pair of shovels.
You can see the listing here on eBay. There have already been over 60 bids and the latest bid is over $38.00. Several other ebay merchants are also selling snow. A search on eBay for Colorado Snow will bring up several results.

O.J.'s If I Did It Is Not on Ebay

If I Did ItYou won't find O.J.'s If I Did It book in stores because it is not going to be published despite a bizarre letter from publisher Judith Regan. You also won't find the book on eBay -- at least not anymore. UPI reports that the book was there and while it was there the bids climbed to $222,000.
Two copies of the book -- which was dropped by the HarperCollins publishing house amid a flurry of controversy -- were placed on the Internet auction site and have been drawing numerous bids ever since, the newspaper said.

"If I Did It" tells a hypothetical story of how Simpson would have committed the infamous murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. O.J. Simpson was found not guilty in a sensation trial in 1995.

HarperCollins had said it would destroy all copies of the book after its parent company, News Corp., announced the book release and a TV special promoting it would be canceled. Somehow, two copies of the book found their way onto the Web site.
Another article says bids went into the $1 million range. The news the book was on eBay upset Nicole Brown Simpson's family. eBay pulled the book at the request of publisher HarperCollins. A journalist searching for the book was able to find only an OJ Simpson poster. A current search on eBay.com for If I Did It may bring a few items but it won't get you to the unpublished OJ Simpson book about he hypothetically murdered his wife.

eBay Cancels Mummy Auction

All Headline News reports that eBay pulled an auction for mummified human remains shortly after it was posted. The woman posting the mummy listing claimed she thought it was an "anatomical, medical use skeleton."
Lynn Sterling, the entrepreneurial woman responsible for the posting, told police officials that she had acquired the mummy for an old friend who had worked on a demolition project 30 years ago. Lynn stated that she had spoken with an attorney regarding the matter before posting the remains.

In a comment made to the Port Huron Times, Lynn stated, "It's an anatomical, medical use skeleton. I would never have put it on (eBay) if I thought it was anything other than an anatomical, medical thing."

According to one medical examiner involved in identifying the source and identity of the mummy, the auctioned item was an intact skeleton with segments of mummified tissue.

"It's very, very old. It's probably some type of anatomical dissection that was part of an anatomy class that over time got into the hands of somebody in the general public," the examiner explained.
Apparently, the mummy received one bid for $500 before the auction was pulled. Another news story says they are still trying to track down the origins of the mummy.

Vehicle From Stephen King's Christine Auctioned on Ebay

ChristineThe Volvo Auto Museum is auctioning off several famous cars on eBay. The spotlight of the auction is Christine, the most famous Plymouth of all time. Christine is the 1958 Fury that starred in John Carpenter's 1983 movie adaptation of Stephen King's horror classic. The auction can be found here. It runs until October 11th.
Thats right, this is not a clone or replica! This is one of the actual cars built for and used in Christine by John Carpenter and Stephen King. This is car # 14, it has a full documented history verifying its authenticity. For the movie the car was fitted with a roll cage and a low mounted solo seat so that the driver would be out of site and the car would appear self driving. After the movie the cars interior was restored back to origional so it could be used more practically. The stunt parts are included. This car has been on display in our museum for the past 5 years and has not been for sale. It is the most talked about car, more so than even the Batmobile. It is one of, if not these most significant movie cars of all times. While lots of cars are used in movies, this car was the movie! The main character with the movie being named after her. Also unlike many high profile movie cars, this one does not carry any contract limiting its commercial use. One of our most prescious movie cars. However it is time to let someone else enjoy it so we can make room for a new display.
Other vehicles up for auction include a van used in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Flinstones Sea Doo, the GTO Mirthmobile from Wayne's World and the sleigh prop from The Grinch. The full list of auctions can be found here.

Man Slapped With Fish in Charity Effort

In an unusual charity bid a man auctioned the opportunity for someone to slap him in the face with a fish of their choice. BBC reports that a woman won the auction with a bid of £210 and selected two rainbow trout for her slapping opportunity.
Student Lucy Berry won the chance to slap Ben Fillmore, 24, who had begun an auction on the eBay website to raise money for the Stroke Association UK.

Ms Berry, who used two rainbow trout, said after the slap at Hyde Park's Speakers Corner in London: "It was extremely satisfying."

Mr Fillmore hopes to raise £10,000 for the charity.

Ms Berry, who was allowed to choose the type of fish used in the slapping, said: "It is kind of a dream of mine.
Ben Fillmore, the man who was slapped with the fish to raise money for Stroke Association UK, also has a blog. His posts about the fish slap auction can be found here and here. A video can also be seen here on Sky News.

New Species Discovered on Ebay

New Urchin Species on eBayComputeractive reports that a colorful new species of urchin has been discovered on a eBay auction listing. The auction can be found here for as long as the entry lasts. The new species was identified by Dr Simon Coppard of the Natural History Museum in London.
One such creature is still up for sale on the auction site, the Guardian newspaper reports. The high bid, at the time of writing, is $28 (£15).

Such items regularly come up for sale on Ebay, and Dr Simon Coppard of the Natural History Museum in London is often consulted by collectors to help identify them.

Dr Coppard named the urchin Coelopleurus exquisitus because of the bright colours on its exterior. The urchin is incorrectly described as being of the species Coelopleurus interruptus on the auction page.

The zoologist said he was concerned that controls need to be put in place on the numbers of urchins up for sale, although he welcomed the interest in the subject.
New Scientist, Spurgeonblog, Tinkerty Tonk, The Guardian and Boing Boing are also covering the story.
