Williams-Sonoma's Enchanted Filled Easter Egg

Williams Sonoma Decorative Egg Gift

Williams-Sonoma's handcrafted German papier-mache egg was inspired by an early-20th-century postcard. The image on the egg box shows a bunny rabbit driving a chicken-powered egg-shaped carriage. Williams-Sonoma says the collectible egg box was handcrafted at a family-owned workshop in Germany. The inside of the egg contains a giggling handmade milk chocolate bunny, three milk chocolate chicks, milk chocolate carrot, lollipops and artisanal jelly beans. The Easter gift can be purchased here on williams-sonoma.com for $26.

Williams-Sonoma Plans to Continue Closing Select Stores

The Wall Street Journal reports that Williams-Sonoma plans to continue to close stores, particularly in markets where it has more than one store. The company is focusing on stores that have leases coming up for expiration. As the leases come up for renewal, Williams-Sonoma will either negotiate for a better lease or close the store.
"Our strategy for store closings is to optimize our cost per square foot," she said during a conference hosted by Bank of America/Merrill Lynch. "The goal is not closing stores per se."

Over the next three years, 25% of the leases on the stores in the company's stable of brands, including Pottery Barn home furnishings stores and Williams-Sonoma kitchen stores, will be coming to an end. Williams-Sonoma sees that as a major opportunity to negotiate more favorable lease costs or terms or to relocate or close stores entirely, executives said. That should help it return to historical levels of profitability for its retail stores, McCollam said.
Williams-Sonoma cut jobs and a distribution center last year. They also closed some stores. The retailer also lowered prices last year as it battled the recession.

Williams Sonoma Heart Shaped Whoopie Pies

Williams-Sonoma is selling heart shaped whoopie pies for Valentine's Day. The company says its Sweetie Pies come from a bakery in Maine. Local butter and free-range eggs are used to make the pies. The red-velvet cakes are filled with buttercream and come in three flavors: chocolate, raspberry and classic vanilla. The pies are individually wrapped and packaged in a ribbon-tied box. You can buy them here for $49.

Williams-Sonoma also sells a whoopie pie pan so you can make your own whoopie pies. However, the pan's shallow whoopie wells are round, not heart shaped.

Williams-Sonoma Lowering Prices to Fight Recession

Williams SonomaIt has been a tough year for Williams-Sonoma. The company laid off 18% off its workforce in January and posted a 22% drop in sales in its first quarter. The Wall Street Journal reports that one of Williams-Sonoma's recession fighting strategies is to lower prices. The retailer has already lowered prices on its store brands and plans to lower prices on bigger-ticket items like furniture at its Pottery Barn stores.
Williams-Sonoma has been introducing lower prices across its store brands, including its namesake outlets as well as Pottery Barn and West Elm. Among the best-selling merchandise, the company said, are inexpensive goods such as pillows.

The San Francisco-based retailer also is lowering prices on bigger-ticket items such as furniture to entice shoppers. The starting price of a sofa at its Pottery Barn stores has dropped to $999 from $1,299. At its value-oriented West Elm stores, it reintroduced the basic futon, furniture that can convert from a sofa to a bed.

Howard Lester, chairman and chief executive of Williams-Sonoma, said on a conference call with investors, "People's homes are still one of their most material assets, and they will invest in them over time. And when they do, our brands will be well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunity."
Home Textiles reports that one bright spot for Williams-Sonoma has been bedding. Laura Alber, president of Williams-Sonoma, said, "We're seeing renewed interest in textiles, particularly bedding. We're seeing this great pillow uptick for a while now ... and we're seeing that spill over into our bedding business and some of these decorative accessory areas where you get a lot of update for your money."

Williams-Sonoma to Cut Jobs, Close Distribution Center

Williams-SonomaWilliams-Sonoma, a retailer of home furnishings and gourmet cookware, has become the latest retailer making cutbacks because of the recession. Reuters reports that the company will cut 1,400 jobs (18% of its workforce). They will also close a call center in Pennsylvania and a distribution plant in Tennessee.
The company also pared projected capital spending for this year, and said it expects further overhead cost cuts in catalog production, information technology and logistics.

It expects to save about $75 million in costs on a pretax basis for 2009.

The company, which also operates Pottery Barn stores, still expects diluted per-share earnings at the low end of a previous range of 10 cents to 30 cents a share for its 2008 fourth quarter, even after taking a charge tied to the cost cuts.
The cuts are expected to be made by the end of the month. William-Sonoma's net revenues fell 22.6% over an eight-week holiday period ending Dec. 28th. See also Bloomberg, AP, SFist and Bizjournals.com.
