Study Finds Shopping Burns Calories

Shopping and Walking FlickrThe Daily Mail reports on a study, commissioned by the British retailer Debenhams, that found shopping helps burn calories. This is not a big surprise because shopping involves walking, which burns calories. The researchers found that women burn an average of 48,000 calories per year from shopping.
In a separate poll, experts calculated that women burned around five calories for every minute spent browsing the shelves - almost 48,000 per year. That is the equivalent of 25 days' worth of a woman's recommended daily intake of 1,940 calories.

The study revealed women make around 11 shopping trips - spending around 13 hours - on the High Street, supermarket or local shop each month.
The study also found that the average woman "covers 2.96 miles on a shopping trip and spends around 2.5 hours browsing in stores every week." Burning calories does make a good excuse for a shopping trip.

Alberto Giacometti's Walking Man Sculpture Sells for $104 Million

Alberto Giacometti Walking Man SculptureThe Wall Street Journal reports that Alberto Giacometti's 6-foot sculpture of a walking man sold for $104.3 million at a Sotheby's auction in London. It is the highest auction price ever paid for a piece of artwork. The WSJ says the high bid for Walking Man I could signal a resurgence in the art market.
The 6-foot-tall bronze depicts a wiry man in mid-stride, his right foot jutting forward, his head erect and and his arms hanging at his side. Giacometti, a modern master known for his haunting sculptures of blank-faced Everymen, cast the work 60 years ago as part of a commission to plant several of his bronze figures on Chase Manhattan Bank's Pine Street plaza in New York City. The artist famously struggled with the project, eventually quitting it but casting stand-alone versions of several of the planned figures, including "Walking Man I."

The price breaks the existing $104.2 million auction record, set six years ago at Sotheby's, for Pablo Picasso's 1906 portrait "Boy With a Pipe," whose buyer remains unknown.
Art Daily has a photo here that gives you a good idea of the statue's size. You can read more about Alberto Giacometti here on artcyclopedia.com.

Children Walking to School Alone: An Idea Whose Time Has Passed

The New York Times has a very interesting article about the debate over whether children should be allowed to walk to the bus stop or to school alone. The trend since the 1960s has been for fewer children to walk to school because of perceived dangers to the children, including kidnapping.
It has been 30 years since the May morning when Julie Patz, a Manhattan mother, finally allowed her 6-year-old son, Etan, to walk by himself to the school-bus stop, two blocks away. She watched till he crossed the street -- and never saw him again. Since that haunting case, a generation of parents and administrators have created dense rituals of supervision around what used to be a mere afterthought of childhood: taking yourself to and from school. Certain realities also shape these procedures, such as the schedules of working parents, unsafe neighborhoods and school transportation cuts.

*****

Parents' worst nightmares were inflamed recently by the re-emergence of Jaycee Dugard, the 11-year-old girl who was kidnapped on her way to the school bus 18 years ago in northern California. The fear of abduction by strangers "has become a norm within middle-class parental circles," said Paula S. Fass, a history professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Kidnapped: Child Abduction in America. "We try to control our fears to the nth degree, so we drop our children off right at school. It's a confirmation that I'm a good parent.'"

In 1969, 41 percent of children either walked or biked to school; by 2001, only 13 percent still did, according to data from the National Household Travel Survey. In many low-income neighborhoods, children have no choice but to walk. During the same period, children either being driven or driving themselves to school rose to 55 percent from 20 percent. Experts say the transition has not only contributed to the rise in pollution, traffic congestion and childhood obesity, but has also hampered children's ability to navigate the world.
Some parents think that the fears are overblown, because "only" 115 children are kidnapped by a stranger each year in the U.S. That is an absurd argument. What if it's your kid that's one of the 115 that's been kidnapped, tortured, raped or killed? Six year olds should not be left unattended -- ever. But that what some parents and experts are recommending.

We're not buying this idea that it's ok to play the lottery with your kid's safety. It's a dangerous world out there and there are plenty of child predators. Extra precautions are just common sense in today's world. They'll have to get their exercise at school or at home with parental supervision.

Honda Launches Assisted Walking Device

Honda Assisted Walking Device

Honda Motor Co. unveiled its walking assist device that helps support bodyweight to reduce the load on an individual's legs while walking, going up and down stairs and performing tasks. The device is designed for people who are capable of walking and maneuvering on their own, but who can benefit from additional leg and body support while performing tasks. Honda says it will now begin testing the device in real-world conditions to evaluate its effectiveness.

Honda says the device reduces the load on leg muscles and joints (in the hip, knees, and ankles) by supporting a portion of the person's bodyweight. Some of the research behind the walking assist device came from work on Honda's advanced humanoid robot, ASIMO.

The device is still in testing phases and there is no word on when it will be available for consumers to purchase. If it delivers as promised there are a lot of people who might benefit from the device and be interested in purchasing it. This video from Wired shows Honda's device in action. Crunchgear's post also has another video. Crunchgear also notes that the device weighs 14 pounds and runs for about two hours on a lithium ion battery. Take a look:

British Police to Hand Out Flip Flips to Drunks in High Heels

Tired of picking up drunk women who've fallen off their stilettos on the weekends, the police in Torbay, Devon will be handing out flip flops to drunks to walk home in.
The idea is the latest plan from police in Torbay, Devon, a resort which is popular for stag and hen nights. They have already launched schemes which has seen officers hand out condoms and sexual health advice and order drunken men who urinate in the street to mop up their own mess.

Now Inspector Adrian Leisk plans to hand out flip-flops with the 'Know Your Code' alcohol message printed on them. Insp Leisk said: "Sometimes people get drunk and you see them carrying footwear which is inappropriate. "The emphasis is on providing replacement footwear for people to get home in, should they find their high heels uncomfortable, inappropriate or soiled.'

He added: "We have consulted with people who work week-in, week-out on our night time patrol areas, including street pastors, the Safe Bus, and community wardens. "This is just one of a number of measures designed to keep people safe'. The footwear will be paid for by £30,000 worth of funding secured from the Home Office by Safer Communities Torbay.
$60,000 dollars of taxpayers' money to hand out flip flops to drunks in high heels? We're thinking that England is overdue for a taxpayer revolt in the near future.

Nordic Walking Improves Common Exercise

It may look funny at first, but Nordic walking can burn extra calories and use more of your muscles than regular walking. Nordic walkers swing two nordic poles, like those used for cross country skiing, with them while they walk. The exercise is starting to grow in popularity in the United States. It is already popular in Finland where over 300,000 people regulary nordic walk.
