Walmart and Best Buy Exit Used Video Games Business
Walmart and Best Buy both decided to try out used video game sales last year. Now they are both exiting the business and shutting down used games kiosks. This should make Gamestop more comfortable. Industry Gamers cites Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia as saying the used games sales from the kiosks were "underwhelming."
Dearlerscope says the company behind the trade-in kiosks, e-Play LLC, has ceased operations.

Toys R Us Now Accepting Video Game Trade-ins
You can add Toys "R" Us to the growing list of retailers that accept game trade-ins. Used games can be traded in for a Toys "R" Us gift card representing the value offered for the trade-in. Gift cards can be immediately used on any product available in Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores as well as online at Toysrus.com.
The company said in a press release that used video games in their original cases, with the original case artwork, can be brought to a Toys "R" Us Guest Services desk. Games will then be scanned and prices will be offered for individual titles.
Amazon, Best Buy and Gamestop are three other retailers that accept video game trade-ins. Gamestop's bottom line was boosted by the sale of used video games. This likely encouraged Amazon.com and other retailers to start accepting trade-ins.

Amazon Launches Video Games Trade-in Service
Amazon.com has launched a video games trade-in website that lets gamers trade-in used video games for store credit. Reuters reports that analysts believe Amazon's latest launch is a challenge to GameStop. Used games have helped boost GameStop's bottom line.
Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter called the Amazon development "disconcerting," suggesting that it chips into a kind of monopoly that GameStop has on used games, albeit one too small for game trade-in competition from Amazon to have much impact on the specialty retailer's profits.
GameStop profit margins have benefited from an active trade-in system in which shoppers return used games for a fraction of the purchase price or store credit. The returned games are sold at a higher profit margin than new games.
Balter suggested that GameStop can withstand near-term encroachment from physical retailers.
"That (Toys R Us testing) in many ways is less of a threat, as GameStop's advantage of 10 times as many locations and selection seem to make them less vulnerable," he said. "Best Buy and others have tested it for some time but have not been as successful."
Amazon.com notes that traded in games must be in good condition. Amazon.com's strategy for used goods in the past has been to allow sellers to sell used video games so having people send in games directly to Amazon.com is a new strategy. Whether or not they can challenge GameStop will depend on the quality and quantity of games that Amazon is able to obtain from gamers.

Used Game Sales Help GameStop
A Wall Street Journal story says GameStop, which has over 6,100 stores the U.S., was able to best its rivals in selling video games in 2008 thanks to its practice of selling used video games. Barnes & Noble started the practice of selling used video games in 2000 and GameStop continued the practice when it was spunoff from Barnes & Noble in 2004.
GameStop this month reported a 22% jump in overall sales and a 10% increase in sales at stores open more than 12 months for the holiday sales period ended Jan. 3. It didn't hurt that videogame sales climbed 9% in December to a record $5.3 billion, according to market research firm NPD Group.
GameStop's sales gains are particularly buoyant compared with other retailers that sell videogames. Best Buy Co., the nation's largest consumer electronics chain, said earlier this month that its sales of entertainment goods, including videogames, movies and music, plunged 12% in December from a year ago. Best Buy's sales of videogame hardware and accessories fell by a "mid-single digits" percentage last month compared with the year before. Circuit City Stores Inc., another retailer of consoles and games, last week announced it would liquidate its 567 stores by April.
GameStop, however, "significantly increased sales of both new and used games," said Daniel DeMatteo, chief executive of the Grapevine, Texas-based retailer in an interview. Results for the final quarter are due in mid-March.
GameStop lets gamers trade in old games for in-store credit. They list games that they have some of the highest store credit offers here. This is the second success story related to the selling of used products we have heard of recently. The other is CeX which buys and sells electronics as well as video games. CeX plans to open more stores in the U.S. this year.
