Tyler Perry Beats Jonas Brothers at the Box Office
Well, this is a bit of a surprise. The Jonas Brothers new 3-D movie was beaten at the box office this weekend by Tyler Perry's Medea Goes to Jail. No, really. Jonas Brothers: the 3-D Concert Experiencemade
$12,700,000, while Medea made $16,500,000 in its second week of release. On the other hand, the Jonas Brothers made more per theater than Medea, and is in fewer theaters, because it is in 3-D. But studio execs were hoping for repeat performance of the Miley Cyrus 3-D concert movie, which made over $30 million in its opening weekend.
Best Picture Oscar Winner Slumdog Millionaire made another $12,150,000, bringing its cumulative take to date to $115,148,000.
Tyler Perry won the weekend box office with his latest film, Madea Goes to Jail. The movie took in a surprising $41 million in its debut weekend. The film stars Tyler Perry playing a slew of different characters. There were hardly any new films released for Madea to compete with but some films that have been out for a few weeks did well. Neil Gaiman's Coraline jumped up to the #2 spot taking in $11.4 million. Taken, the kidnap thriller, is sticking around in its 4th week of release by winning the 3rd slot and bringing in another $11.2 million. Jennifer Aniston's hit romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You came in fourth and has now made over $70 million. The Oscar champion Slumdog Millionaire took the fifth slot. Friday the 13th, Paul Blart and Shopaholic came in 6th, 7th and 8th.
There are not many new movies opening in theatres this coming weekend - just a Jonas Brothers movie, Crossing Over and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - so we will see if any of the Oscar winners get a box office bump.
