Toys R Us Launches Special New Moon Sections

Toys R Us New Moon Store

Toys R Us is joining Nordstrom, Hot Topic and other retailers in launching special New Moon sections. The Toys R Us New Moon store can be found both online and in the toy retailers bricks-and-mortar locations. It carries action figures, lunch boxes, chip clips, backpacks, wallets and dolls. It also carries throw pillows and games like those pictures above. Toys R Us does not appear to carry the large Edward and Jacob cutouts so they won't have to worry about middle-aged women running off with them, which is what happened at Nordstrom's.

Toys R Us Launches Layaway Program

Toys R Us has launched an in-store layaway program in time for the upcoming holidays. Through the Toys R Us "Big Gift" layaway program customers may reserve toys and baby products early in the season and make a series of small payments over an extended period. The layaway program is available beginning today in Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.

The press release for the layaway announcement says the program requires a deposit of 20% of the total purchase, including taxes and a $10 service charge. Payments can be made at the store at any time in the form of cash, check, credit card, debit card or gift card. The press release does not say customers can pay online.

Toys R Us says they will have merchandise available within 7-10 days of the final payment, so items "must be paid for in full by December 6 to ensure that the gift is available for pickup before Christmas." The press release also says there will be a fee for canceled layaway orders.

Sears also recently launched a layaway program.

Toys R Us Now Accepting Video Game Trade-ins

Toys R UsYou can add Toys "R" Us to the growing list of retailers that accept game trade-ins. Used games can be traded in for a Toys "R" Us gift card representing the value offered for the trade-in. Gift cards can be immediately used on any product available in Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores as well as online at Toysrus.com.

The company said in a press release that used video games in their original cases, with the original case artwork, can be brought to a Toys "R" Us Guest Services desk. Games will then be scanned and prices will be offered for individual titles.

Amazon, Best Buy and Gamestop are three other retailers that accept video game trade-ins. Gamestop's bottom line was boosted by the sale of used video games. This likely encouraged Amazon.com and other retailers to start accepting trade-ins.

Toys R Us Buys KBToys.com

KB Toys LogoToys 'R' Us continues to make acquisitions. The latest purchase by the toy retailer is KBToys.com. KB Toys filed bankruptcy last December and Toys 'R' Us won the KBToys.com domain and related assets in an auction, according to an Internet Retailer story. Toys 'R' Us issued a statement indicating the purchase was part of its aggressive strategy to acquire more baby and toy marketshare.
"This acquisition is another example of how we are playing to win by aggressively pursuing opportunities to advance our specialist position in the toy and baby products industries," says Toys 'R' Us. "The family of brands is well-positioned to be a strong competitor and capture more toy-buying dollars in the months and years ahead."
Recessions can create opportunities for those with cash to expand marketshare. Toys 'R' Us has made several other acquisitions already this year. They acquired FAO Schwarz in May and bought eToys.com in February. The eToys.com purchase from The Parent Co. also included BabyUniverse.com and ePregnancy.com. Toys 'R' Us also launched Toys.com in July to help people keep up with deals at its various baby and toy websites.

Toys R Us Joins Sears in Bringing Early Holiday Cheer

Christmas ShoppingWe mentioned in an earlier post that Sears is already setting up Christmas shops in some of its stores and online. Reuters says they aren't the only retailer getting an extremely early jump on the winter holidays, which are still several months away.

Reuters says Toys 'R' Us is bringing holiday cheer in July in the form of early discounts but there will also be candy canes and Christmas cards.
Toys R Us is planning a similar event, but with more emphasis on holiday-themed pricing of roughly 50 percent off bicycles, video games, doll houses and portable DVD players.

While the chain won't be selling holiday merchandise, it will be bringing unseasonal cheer, complete with Christmas cards and candy canes, to its stores on July 25.

"Everyone needs a little Christmas, right this very minute," the company said in a release last week.
Nordstrom will be running sales on winter apparel later this month but they told Reuters they won't be bringing out the holiday decorations just yet.
"Our customers really love the fact that we do not celebrate the holidays until the day after Thanksgiving," she said, "and we have no plans to change that."
Nordstrom's policy probably makes the most sense. If you bring out all the holiday decorations in July everyone will be tired of them well before December. Hopefully, the shopping malls will resist the temptation to bring out the holiday decorations this summer.

Toys R Us Launches Toys.com Website

Toys dotcomToys 'R' Us has launched relaunched Toys.com as a website that displays toy-related deals. Toys 'R' Us will use the site to advertise deals available on its online stores Toyrsus.com, Babiesrus.com, eToys.com and babyuniverse.com. The site will also provide information about deals in the company's bricks-and-mortar locations: Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us.

The Toys.com website will also offer an exclusive Deal of the Day. Internet Retailer says the Toys.com website was previously a toy comparisoin shopping website. The site should be popular with consumers because the recession has many consumers in a deal-hunting mood. The site also makes it easier to keep up with sales across the growing number of baby and toy properties from Toys 'R' Us.

FAO Schwarz Acquired By Toys R Us

FAO Schwarz salutes its new owners Toys R' Us. Toys 'R' Us has acquired its rival toy retailer. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bloomberg reports that Toys R' Us plans to continue operating FAO Schwarz's two big retail stores in New York and Las Vegas under the same name. The FAO Schwarz website and catalog businesses will also retail the same name.

Chris Byrne, a toy analyst at TimetoPlayMag.com, told Bloomberg that financially it's a brillaint move to combine the two toy companies.
The deal combines two closely held retailers that have faced increased competition from the Internet and discount chains during the recession. U.S. retail sales of toys generated $21.6 billion in 2008, a 3 percent drop from 2007, according to researcher NPD Group Inc. Mass merchant, discount and online retailers saw the most modest declines, NPD said, as consumers looked for ways to buy non-necessities at the lowest cost.

"Financially, I think it's brilliant," Chris Byrne, a New York-based toy-industry analyst and director of content at TimetoPlayMag.com, said today in a telephone interview. "You get all of the cachet and the look of a specialty store and a destination with the operational efficiencies of a giant like Toys "R" Us."

At Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, entertainment, electronics and toys accounted for 14 percent of sales in the year that ended Jan. 31.
A Bizjournals.com article says the deal means there will be no more FAO Schwarz stores inside Macy's locations.

Toys R Us Now Selling Snacks, Cereal and Cleaning Supplies

ToysRUs R Market

Toys 'R' Us, Inc. is taking on convenience store chains with its "R" Market, which features aisles of food and household products. The "R" Markets are currently located inside 260 of the company's 585 stores and will be added at additional locations across the country later this year. "R" Market carries items like snacks, beverages, lunchboxes, candy, paper goods and cleaning supplies. There's also a section with baby supplies including diapers, infant formula and baby food.

"As part of our business strategy, we are continually focused on improving the shopping experience for customers in our stores. This includes looking for new ways to provide busy parents with the convenience of finding everything they need for their kids under one roof," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "The introduction of "R" Market offers customers a uniquely edited presentation of differentiated, kid-focused products from well-known manufacturers, as well as newer brands."

An article in Time says some analysts think the decision to add food and household items is a wise one for Toys 'R' Us.

Judge Orders Amazon.con and Toys R Us to Divorce

It appears that the long-time partnership between Amazon.com and Toys "R" Us is about to come to an end. At the beginning of the Internet boom, Toys "R" Us and Amazon.com signed a 10 year deal in which Amazon.com became the only place online to buy toys from Toys "R" Us. But years later, Amazon added Target and independent small retailers on its site, which infuriated Toys "R" Us which thought it had an exclusive toy deal. A lawsuit ensued. Now a judge has ordered the partnership to be ended so that Toys "R" Us can open its own website. But Amazon.com is appealing.

From some of her comments, it appears that the trial Judge was less than impressed with the testimony and/or truthfulness of Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos.
In her opinion, [Judge] McVeigh took a rather dim view of the trial testimony of some Amazon executives, including that of the company’s billionaire founder Jeff Bezos, saying she had "no doubt his knowledge and understanding (of the Toys "R" Us agreement) went much deeper than revealed."

When pushed on the witness stand, "certain information 'just came back to him'" she said in the ruling, while another of Bezos' explanations was referred to as "rather childlike."

McVeigh also rejected Amazon’s efforts to defend itself by asking her to throw out e-mail evidence that may have included hearsay. She said she found it "incomprehensible... that a corporation dealing primarily in Internet commerce finds Internet communications to lack reliability."

And she repeatedly complained about the ambiguous use of language in memorandums, contract agreements and discussions, concluding that "the language as drafted whether intentional or inartful gave Amazon the words to play the game their way." Although the ruling does not include monetary damages, the loss of Toys "R" Us as a partner could have a significant financial impact on Amazon. The toy retailer, which was sold to a private investment consortium last year for $6.6 billion, says it is the nation’s largest online retailer and had been paying Amazon a base fee of $50 million annually plus a percentage of its sales.
So what did Bezos do that so infuriated Judge McVeigh? Did he dress inappropriately? Wear white shoes during the trial? Fail to wear a tie? Wear a green tie? (Studies show that green ties indicate dishonesty, which is why former Vice Presidential candidate and trial lawyer John Edwards always argued cases wearing a blue tie.)

This reminds us of the Microsoft antitrust case in which the CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates, also infuriated the trial judge with his grumpy attitude. Note to CEOs testifying in big money cases: it just doesn't pay to tick off the trial judge. And it certainly would help to dress in a really nice -- yet conservative -- suit and (blue) tie.
