Walmart, Target, Toys R Us Will Stay Open Longer for Last Minute Shoppers
Bloomberg is reporting that major retailers including Walmart, Target, Toys R Us will be keeping stores open longer for last minute holiday shoppers. Analysts see this as a bad sign for retailers.
Many stores typically stay open later during the holiday season. This year, as consumer spending still lags behind the economic recovery, it’s happening with increasing frequency, said Jack Hendler, president of merger-and-acquisition advising firm Net Worth Solutions Inc. in New York.
“The indication from this is that retail sales for the holiday period are not nearly as good as people wished or anticipated or planned for,” Hendler said today in a telephone interview.
Here are some highlights of the stores being kept open longer than usual.
- Walmart will keep most of its 803 discount stores and Sam's Club stores open until 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Bloomberg says this is two hours later than in 2008. There are also 2,746 Walmart supercenters open 24 hours a day.
- Toys R Us will keep 260 of its 586 stores open until 1 a.m. December 19th through December 23rd. This is an hour later than in 2008.
- Most Target locations will stay open until midnight, which is an hour later than in 2008.

Toys R Us to Open FAO Schwarz In Store Boutiques
Toys R Us will open FAO Schwartz mini-boutiques inside a number of Toys R Us stores in preparation for the holiday shopping season.
The boutiques will last until early 2010, then be taken out. Toys R Us bought FAO Schwarz back in May and has taken over the main locations. But the FAO Schwartz name recognition is so high that the company decided to do the boutique idea and reopen the FAP Schwarz website.
"We're excited to bring FAO Schwarz to the millions of Americans who in the past couldn't make their way to New York City," Storch said. "We'll continue to feature FAO merchandise that's very different and distinguishes Toys R Us from other toy sellers."
The FAO Schwarz Web site features interactive pages that include a version of the Muppet Whatnot Workshop in the FAO Schwarz store in New York, the company said.
Storch declined to predict the FAO Schwarz boutiques' sales for the holiday shopping season. FAO Schwarz struck a similar store-within-a-store deal with Macy’s Inc. in May 2008. Those shops will close by November, the department-store chain said.
Toys R Us is the country's largest toy company. It gobbled up BabyUniverse.com, eToys.com, and KBToys.com over the years. The new boutiques are meant to strike a blow at its arch-rival for toy dollars, Wal-Mart. It's a smart move. FAO Schwarz has a name that conjures up magical images of fantastic toys. Toys R Us, eh, not so much. Now people will go to Toys R Us looking for a bargain, and then be sucked in by the exciting FAO Schwarz display.

Toys R Us Launches Layaway Program
Toys R Us has launched an in-store layaway program in time for the upcoming holidays. Through the Toys R Us "Big Gift" layaway program customers may reserve toys and baby products early in the season and make a series of small payments over an extended period. The layaway program is available beginning today in Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.
The press release for the layaway announcement says the program requires a deposit of 20% of the total purchase, including taxes and a $10 service charge. Payments can be made at the store at any time in the form of cash, check, credit card, debit card or gift card. The press release does not say customers can pay online.
Toys R Us says they will have merchandise available within 7-10 days of the final payment, so items "must be paid for in full by December 6 to ensure that the gift is available for pickup before Christmas." The press release also says there will be a fee for canceled layaway orders.
Sears also recently launched a layaway program.

Toys R Us Under Investigation by FTC For Baby Product Price Fixing
Toys R Us is under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission for possible antitrust violations. The FTC is looking into allegations that the toy retailer used its market power to stifle discounting and force consumers to pay more for baby products. The company was ordered eleven years ago to stop engaging in anticompetitive tactics, according to The Wall Street Journal and some believe that the company is up to its old tricks once again.
Last time, the company got in trouble for strong-arming toy makers into boycotting Costco. The FTC put a stop to it. This time Toys R Us is accused of price fixing in connection with breast pumps, strollers, car seats and high chair. Breast pump price fixing? Taking advantage of nursing mothers? How low can you go? Apparently pretty low, according to incriminating emails the WSJ got ahold of.
The probe is a signal that federal enforcers are taking a more aggressive role in one of the most contentious issues in retailing: whether manufacturers and retailers can agree to set a minimum retail prices on products.
FTC investigators are expected to review numerous emails exchanged among Babies R Us and various manufacturers.
One set of email exchanges filed in a class-action case appears to show Babies R Us urging the Britax Childcare unit of Carlyle Group LLC to get Target Corp. to raise prices. The subject field in the email exchanges said: "Target has not raised prices."
"Did Target commit to you when they will raise their prices?" Cesar Garcia, director of merchandising at Babies R Us, allegedly asked in an email dated Jan. 6, 2006.
According to the emails, a couple of hours later, Scott Doerstling, a Britax representative at the time, allegedly responded: "Target said they would honor the new MSRP's [Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price] ... please be assured that Britax's goal is to have uniform MSRP's in the market place."
Five days later, according to court records, Mr. Doerstling allegedly sent another email to Mr. Garcia reassuring him that "We are in communications with them [Target]. We understand your position and are doing what we 'legally' can do to ensure MSRP harmony in the marketplace."
It's all very dramatic, with allegations of intimidation and threats. Apparently the baby product world is just one big Sopranos episode.
Other documents indicate that Babies R Us canceled orders from Swiss company Medela Inc. of Switzerland because the company didn't enforce pricing agreements with Internet retailers. Medela buckled under the pressure and stopped selling to Internet retailers. And it just gets worse from there.
Price fixing is unethical, and illegal under federal law. This probe is just getting started. Toys R Us denies any wrongdoing.

Toys R Us Now Accepting Video Game Trade-ins
You can add Toys "R" Us to the growing list of retailers that accept game trade-ins. Used games can be traded in for a Toys "R" Us gift card representing the value offered for the trade-in. Gift cards can be immediately used on any product available in Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores as well as online at Toysrus.com.
The company said in a press release that used video games in their original cases, with the original case artwork, can be brought to a Toys "R" Us Guest Services desk. Games will then be scanned and prices will be offered for individual titles.
Amazon, Best Buy and Gamestop are three other retailers that accept video game trade-ins. Gamestop's bottom line was boosted by the sale of used video games. This likely encouraged Amazon.com and other retailers to start accepting trade-ins.

Toys R Us Buys KBToys.com
Toys 'R' Us continues to make acquisitions. The latest purchase by the toy retailer is KBToys.com. KB Toys filed bankruptcy last December and Toys 'R' Us won the KBToys.com domain and related assets in an auction, according to an Internet Retailer story. Toys 'R' Us issued a statement indicating the purchase was part of its aggressive strategy to acquire more baby and toy marketshare.
"This acquisition is another example of how we are playing to win by aggressively pursuing opportunities to advance our specialist position in the toy and baby products industries," says Toys 'R' Us. "The family of brands is well-positioned to be a strong competitor and capture more toy-buying dollars in the months and years ahead."
Recessions can create opportunities for those with cash to expand marketshare. Toys 'R' Us has made several other acquisitions already this year. They acquired FAO Schwarz in May and bought eToys.com in February. The eToys.com purchase from The Parent Co. also included BabyUniverse.com and ePregnancy.com. Toys 'R' Us also launched Toys.com in July to help people keep up with deals at its various baby and toy websites.

Trade-in Old Baby Products For 20% Off at Toys R Us
Toys 'R' Us is taking the Cash for Clunkers concept and applying it to toys. With its "Great Trade-In" the retailer is letting consumers trade in their old baby products in exchange for 20% off new products at Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us stores. The offer runs from August 28th until September 20th.
From Friday, August 28 through Sunday, September 20, Babies"R"Us and Toys"R"Us stores nationwide are holding the "Great Trade-In" event, providing our customers the opportunity to trade-in any used cribs, car seats, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, playards or high chairs in exchange for a 20% savings on the purchase of any new baby item, in any of these product categories, from select manufacturers.
The "Great Trade-In" event places an emphasis on specific baby products, such as cribs and car seats that, due to safety concerns, may not be the best candidates to be handed down or resold. Beyond recalls, certain older and used baby items can be potentially unsafe for a variety of reasons, including damage or lack of compliance with recent advances in product safety standards.
The Toys 'R' Us website says the trade-in offer applies to the following brands: Babi Italia, Baby Caché, Baby Trend, Bertini, Britax, Chicco, Contours by Kolcraft, Cosco, Delta, Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco, Jeep, Natures Purest by Summer Infant, Safety 1st, and Sorelle.

FAO Schwarz Acquired By Toys R Us
FAO Schwarz salutes its new owners Toys R' Us. Toys 'R' Us has acquired its rival toy retailer. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bloomberg reports that Toys R' Us plans to continue operating FAO Schwarz's two big retail stores in New York and Las Vegas under the same name. The FAO Schwarz website and catalog businesses will also retail the same name.
Chris Byrne, a toy analyst at TimetoPlayMag.com, told Bloomberg that financially it's a brillaint move to combine the two toy companies.
The deal combines two closely held retailers that have faced increased competition from the Internet and discount chains during the recession. U.S. retail sales of toys generated $21.6 billion in 2008, a 3 percent drop from 2007, according to researcher NPD Group Inc. Mass merchant, discount and online retailers saw the most modest declines, NPD said, as consumers looked for ways to buy non-necessities at the lowest cost.
"Financially, I think it's brilliant," Chris Byrne, a New York-based toy-industry analyst and director of content at TimetoPlayMag.com, said today in a telephone interview. "You get all of the cachet and the look of a specialty store and a destination with the operational efficiencies of a giant like Toys "R" Us."
At Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, entertainment, electronics and toys accounted for 14 percent of sales in the year that ended Jan. 31.
A Bizjournals.com article says the deal means there will be no more FAO Schwarz stores inside Macy's locations.

Toys R Us Now Selling Snacks, Cereal and Cleaning Supplies
Toys 'R' Us, Inc. is taking on convenience store chains with its "R" Market, which features aisles of food and household products. The "R" Markets are currently located inside 260 of the company's 585 stores and will be added at additional locations across the country later this year.
"R" Market carries items like snacks, beverages, lunchboxes, candy, paper goods and cleaning supplies. There's also a section with baby supplies including diapers, infant formula and baby food.
"As part of our business strategy, we are continually focused on improving the shopping experience for customers in our stores. This includes looking for new ways to provide busy parents with the convenience of finding everything they need for their kids under one roof," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "The introduction of "R" Market offers customers a uniquely edited presentation of differentiated, kid-focused products from well-known manufacturers, as well as newer brands."
An article in Time says some analysts think the decision to add food and household items is a wise one for Toys 'R' Us.

Toys 'R' Us Buys eToys.com
Toys 'R' Us, Inc. has acquired its formal rival, eToys.com, from The Parent Co., which filed for bankruptcy protection in December. In addition to the etoys.com website the deal also includes BabyUniverse.com and ePregnancy.com.
"eToys.com is a highly respected brand with a rich heritage of innovation and growth, and we look forward to championing the next phase of its evolution," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "We believe the acquisition of eToys.com, together with BabyUniverse.com and ePregnancy.com, will advance our leadership in the toy and baby products sectors and position the company for strong market share growth. We are committed to providing loyal customers of these sites with an enhanced online experience, while continuing to offer a differentiated merchandise assortment and the service excellence they have come to expect."
Toys 'R' Us says all three of the acquired websites will continue to operate under their current domain names. Toys 'R' Us, Inc. will assume responsibility for all operations of the sites including merchandising, site management, distribution and marketing. The company did not disclose how much it paid for the websites. Presently, only ePregnancy.com is operational. The other two sites - etoys.com and babyuniverse.com - say the website is in the process of "revitalizing, re-energizing and re-launching."
