Nike Says Tiger Woods Has its Full Support

Nike is giving Tiger Woods its full support after the car accident at his house over Thanksgiving weekend. Nike has been a sponsor of Tiger's for many years. People reports:
"Tiger and his family have Nike's full support," the company said in a statement Monday. "We respect Tiger's request for privacy and our thoughts are with Tiger and his family at this time." Woods, 33, has backed out of his last golf tournament of the year, the Chevron World Challenge in California, citing unspecified injuries from the accident.
Nike is reportedly paying Tiger $40 million to endorse its shoes and other products, so the company's support is a major victory for Tiger in the wake of all the bad press he's been receiving the past few days. So far, none of his other sponsors have stepped up to make a statement.

Tiger Woods Says Accident Was His Fault, Praises Wife's Courage

Tiger Woods finally issued statement on his website in which he took full responsibility for the car accident and praised his wife's actions. He also asked for privacy and said that the wild rumors floating around aren't true. But he didn't go into details. Here's the statement:
As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again.

This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.

The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.

This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.
Well, it's about time. Clearly his attorneys were out of town or something for the Thanksgiving weekend. It sounds like someone who understands crisis management has finally taken the reins of this PR disaster. The fact that Tiger canceled a meeting with the Florida Highway Patrol for the third time -- with no rescheduled date -- says that an attorney with a clue is making the decisions here. We certainly hope so for Tiger and his wife's sake.

Celebrities and sports figures with millions of dollars on the line in endorsements can't afford to go for days after a bizarre incident like this one without some kind of statement to the public and some major spin doctoring.

Florida Highway Patrol: Tiger Woods Seriously Injured in Car Accident

The Chicago Tribune reports that Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a single car accident early this morning. The Florida Highway Patrol just reported the incident.
Woods, 33, pulled out of his driveway in the Isleworth community about 2:25 a.m. when he struck a fire hydrant, and then drove into a tree at his neighbor's property, FHP reported. Woods was transported to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee in serious condition, FHP said. No other information about his condition has been released.

A Health Central hospital employee said at 2:30 p.m. that Woods was not a patient. A hospital operator would not say if Woods had been treated and released. FHP said the airbags in Woods' Cadillac Escalade did not deploy, which means the vehicle was traveling under 33 mph.

Orange County Fire Rescue received the call for aid at 2:28 a.m. Woods was transported from his Windermere-area neighborhood by the hospital's own ambulance. FHP did not report the accident until just after 2 p.m. today. The agency said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
The FHP report said that charges are pending, but it's not clear who would be charged or with what. The report also indicated that alcohol wasn't a factor.

So far there has been no statement from Tiger Woods' rep or family. Our thoughts are with him and his family; we wish him a speedy recovery.

Update: Tiger Woods rep Glenn Greenspan said that Tiger was treated at the hospital and released in "good condition." CNN reported that a local Florida mayor said he suffered facial lacerations.
