Disney Gets Approval to Build Shanghai Theme Park

Disney Parks LogoBloomberg reports that Disney has won a government approval to build a Disney Theme Park in Shanghai.
The agreement to construct Disney's fourth park outside the U.S. in the world's most populous nation "marks a very significant milestone," Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Iger said in a statement. Disney and its Shanghai partners are now allowed to move toward a construction and operation agreement, the statement said.

Disney's foothold in mainland China comes after a decade of negotiations and will cost 24.5 billion yuan ($3.6 billion), according to Hong Kong newspaper Wen Wei Po. The expansion targets the wealth of China’s middle class and the fastest growth of any major economy as Burbank, California-based Disney suffers from lower spending at its U.S. theme parks, tumbling ad sales and falling DVD revenue.

"It gives Disney an opportunity to monetize its brand without necessarily having to produce filmed content," said David Bank, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets in New York. Expanding in China without facing the risk of regulatory hurdles is "the real key to making money in China for the media companies," he added.
Disney should not have any trouble finding people to visit the park. Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, told Bloomberg that there are 80 million people within 3 hours driving distance of where the theme park will be built. The 1,700 acre park will be modeled after Disney's existing parks and incorporate characteristics from Shanghai. It will be 57% owned by China and 43% owned by Disney.

Profit Falls 26% For Walt Disney

Disney Mickey Mouse SmallThe BBC reports that Walt Disney has recorded a 26% drop in profits during its second quarter. Disney says people are spending less money at its theme parks. Revenues were down by 7% for the quarter.
Revenues at the Parks and Resorts division fell 9% to $2.8bn, while those at the Studio Entertainment division fell by 12% to $1.3bn.

The company said visitors were spending less at its theme parks, both in the US and in Paris, France.

Despite the market's reaction, Disney said it was heartened by the results.

"While a tough global economy impacted our performance in the quarter, we remain encouraged by the relative strength of our business," said Disney president Robert Iger.
If the parks are less crowded it is probably a good time to go.

Walt Disney Co. Planning Layoffs

Mickey Mouse RunningThe Wall Street Journal reports that Walt Disney Co. plans to restructure its U.S. theme park operations. They will also be laying off employees but have not specified how many jobs will be cut.
The announcement came less than two weeks after a deadline to accept voluntary buyouts that the company offered to about 600 executives in the Parks and Resorts division. Disney officials declined to say how many executives took a voluntary buyout, but said the number was "satisfactory."

In a memo to employees Wednesday, Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo said the cuts would help build "an organization and cost structure that meet today's economic realities."

In effect, Disney is consolidating many of its behind-the-scenes operations into one unit. For example, separate units in charge of maintenance at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., will be combined into one unit, according to a company official.
The WSJ says attendance to Disney's parks fell 5% in the fourth quarter of 2008 when compared to 2007. That doesn't really seem that bad considering there is a major recession going on but it's bad enough that Disney feels the need to cut costs. Disney's internal outlook for future attendance may not be very optimistic. The company does say that its offer for guests to get in free on their birthdays has helped boost attendance.

Disney to Build $3.59 Billion Theme Park in Shanghai

Shanghai Disneyland

Plans for Walt Disney Co. to build a $3.59 billion theme park in Shanghai are progressing. The Wall Street Journal says that while Disney now has an agreement in place with Shanghai they still have to get approval from China's central government, which could take as long as a year.
Disney has long sought a mainland park for the access to the vast Chinese market that it would offer. The $37.8 billion media giant will be able to pitch the park as creating 50,000 new jobs amid a cooling Chinese economy. The downturn has given the park new urgency, according to a person familiar with the situation. "I think it will really fly now given the current economic climate," that person said.

Still, Leslie Goodman, an executive vice president at Disney's Parks and Resorts unit, stressed the proposal is preliminary and faces a long road ahead of it.

"As part of this lengthy process, we worked on a joint application report with the Shanghai government which will be submitted to the central government for review. She cautioned: "No deal has been signed, no project has been approved."

A Shanghai government spokesman declined to comment. Approvals by China's central government could take up to a year.
If Shanghai and Disney get final approval the park could be ready by 2014. Shanghai has a population of over 20 million so it's a very big market for Disney. L.A. Times, Disney Blog and Reuters have more on Disney's plans for a Shanghai theme park.

Queuing Psychology Can Help Make Long Lines a Little Less Unpleasant

Long LineCNN has an interesting article about queue psychology. It says experts in the field of queuing psychology and industrial engineers work for large theme parks like Disney's parks to make lines seem shorter for visitors.
The line to one popular attraction at Epcot features cameras and large interactive screens that allow visitors to see themselves and play games, such as trying to burst virtual water balloons to reveal a hidden image, Garlington said.

People waiting in line for a comedy show at Walt Disney World are asked to text message jokes that may be used during the main event.

"It works as our warm-up act essentially for the show, but it also takes time while people are working through that and so it keeps them entertained while they're waiting," Garlington said.

"We do study the psychology, try to understand what our guests are thinking and make sure that we're keeping them happy as they move through the lines."

Disney employs more than 75 industrial engineers who help the company with queue management at its parks around the world, said Marilyn Waters, director of media relations at Walt Disney Imagineering.
Encouraging interactive text messaging and expensive interactive screens help at Disney's parks but retailers don't put much if any resources toward entertaining people while they wait in lines. Retailers can do simple things like give an estimate of how long it may take to get through a line or to get into a store. Even a little bit of information can help people waiting according to queue psychology. Retailers can also have things like faster moving lanes for people with just a few items like you see at grocery stores.

What retailers will be focusing on this holiday weekend is trying to get people through the lines as quickly as possible so they can sell as many products as possible. You will probably have to entertain yourself if you get caught in a slow holiday shopping line. That's another good reason to shop with a friend on Black Friday or at least have a friend you can text with while you are stuck outside waiting to get into a store or stuck in line waiting to pay for your Black Friday finds.

Transformers to Become Ride at Universal Studios

Transformers Ride

Transformers is going to be developed into a new theme park attraction at Universal Studios. The attraction will fuse 3D-HD media, special effects and robotics with a ride. The rides are scheduled to make their debuts in early 2011, first at Universal Studios Singapore and then at Universal Studios Hollywood. In Transformers, humans are caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between the friendly Autobots and the evil Decepticons, which can change into a variety of objects, including cars, trucks, planes and tanks. Transformers does sound like the type of movie that could be made into a ride that would be exciting for children. Universal Studios has done this with other blockbuster films including Jurassic Park and Revenge of the Mummy.
