The Demise of the Supermodel

Could the era of the supermodel be over? Only a few models now regularly appear on the cover of fashion magazines. Mostly the covers are taken by actresses. Marc Jacobs says now that they have advanced digital technology to make them look as good as a model, actresses are taking over. Even Anna Wintour admits she's now less likely to put a model of the cover of Vogue.
"It's a difficult time for models," says Marc Jacobs, the chief sponsor of the Costume Institute exhibition. "The whole idea of supermodels came in a pop culture when actresses weren't that interesting. Now Hollywood is filled with young actresses, and there is digital technology to make them look good."

*****

Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue for two decades, admits that she is more likely to find star power in Hollywood than on the runway. "The public interest in models these last few years has not been as it was during the early '90s when Naomi [Campbell] and Linda [Evangelista] caused so much excitement," Ms. Wintour says. "And until models become celebrities again in their own right, I can't see them selling as well on magazine covers as actresses."

*****

Ms. Wintour says that the scarcity of models fronting Vogue is because "the generation that followed the supermodels shied away from that sort of fabulosity and scrutiny."

"For models to have the same social and commercial clout as Hollywood stars, they will have to want to live that sort of 'fishbowl' existence; they will have to be up for living a glamorous and public existence," she says. "Gisele and Kate did this, of course, by dating the likes of Leonardo di Caprio and Johnny Depp early in their careers; by going out to events and walking the red carpet; and by each having, in their very different ways, a world-class sense of style."
Models who are bucking the trend are Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum and Kate Moss, who is still going strong at 36. But as Anna says, they are all celebrities in their own right, hence the staying power.

A death ray is aimed straight at Fashion Week: and people will be hurt. Not just models -- real people. That is, unless the villain is stopped. Can supermodel/superhero Heidi Klum stop the villain and save Fashion Week? Tune in for episode one of Modelinia's webisode series, Spiked Heel, in which supermodels save the world on a daily basis. Supermodel Adriana Lima and the Tico Berry

Adriana Lima Tico Berry

Last week's Ugly Betty had Supermodel Adriana Lima on the show. Adriana shared her secret passion and beauty secret with Mode - the fictitious Tico berry.
The juiciest secret in style has arrived. Most people have never even heard of the Tico berry, but word is spreading, and with one of the hottest names in fashion swearing by it, this fruit is poised to throw style for a loop. Supermodel Adriana Lima has been in on this trendy tropical treasure from the beginning, devouring the delish Tico berry on her grandfather's farm as a young girl. The Brazilian beauty insists that this rare fruit, indigenous to her home country and known primarily by locals, is the sweet secret behind her sexy success.

"Everyone here knows that the Tico berry makes you beautiful," claims Luis Sangalo, a farmer who grows the berries outside of Praia do Forte in the Brazilian state of Bahia where Lima was born. "I always fed my wife the berries and we had many beautiful children."

Science has yet to investigate the Tico berry thoroughly, with many expressing doubts that the fruit could be the source of such luscious looks. A chemist working at one of the world's top cosmetic companies revealed, "I just don't see how one ingredient, whether it's fruit, vegetable, animal or mineral could be singularly responsible for beauty. There really is no magic bullet."

While some may have their doubts about the power of the Tico berry, Lima and the trendiest names in style have officially taken notice of this fierce fruit. It's certainly hard to argue with the results.
You can see more Adriana Lima Tico Berry photos here on the fake Mode website. How great that they made a Mode website to go along with the show.
