Zaha Hadid Designs New Shopping Destination for Jesolo, Italy
This wild looking building will be a new shopping destination located in Jesolo, Italy, which is near Venice. The shopping mall designed by Zaha Hadid will be called the Jesolo Magica. The shopping center will be the home for stores, restaurants, bars, offices, a hotel and more. It is expected to be completed in 2014.
The Daily Mailreports on a study, commissioned by the British retailer Debenhams, that found shopping helps burn calories. This is not a big surprise because shopping involves walking, which burns calories. The researchers found that women burn an average of 48,000 calories per year from shopping.
In a separate poll, experts calculated that women burned around five calories for every minute spent browsing the shelves - almost 48,000 per year. That is the equivalent of 25 days' worth of a woman's recommended daily intake of 1,940 calories.
The study revealed women make around 11 shopping trips - spending around 13 hours - on the High Street, supermarket or local shop each month.
The study also found that the average woman "covers 2.96 miles on a shopping trip and spends around 2.5 hours browsing in stores every week." Burning calories does make a good excuse for a shopping trip.
Target shoppers no longer have to carry their Target gift cards in order to redeem them. Target has launched the Target Mobile GiftCard, which lets Target shoppers save gift card information to a PIN-secure account on the Target.com mobile site. Customers can use a mobile phone with Internet capabilities to retrieve GiftCard barcodes for scanning at checkout. Target shoppers can add value to the Target Mobile GiftCards at store registers and check balances at any time via the Target.com mobile site.
"The addition of Mobile GiftCards to our suite of mobile shopping solutions further simplifies the Target experience for our guests," said Steve Eastman, President of Target.com.
Study: Shoppers Experienced Problems Completing Transactions During 2009 Holidays
Many top online retailers are still having web problems that annoy online shoppers. A new survey of 1,500 online shoppers, conducted by Equation Research on behalf of Gomez, found that many people experienced problems and errors completing transactions during the 2009 holiday shopping season. The study found that a third of online shoppers had a bad experience on a retail Web site during the recent 2009 Holiday shopping season. 15 percent of shoppers found the problem to be "unacceptable." These bad online experiences caused nearly 20% of online shoppers to shop at another site.
"This survey confirms that consumers expect retail Web sites to perform well for them, regardless of how many other shoppers are also visiting the site," said Matt Poepsel, Vice President, Performance Strategies, Gomez Division. "It's also clear that when shoppers encounter Web performance problems, their patience and loyalty run thin. Once a customer has left your site, chances are they are not going to give you a second chance--and few retailers can afford to lose business this way."

Seven and I Closing Seibu Yurakucho Department Store in Tokyo
The Wall Street Journalreports that Seven and I Holdings Co. is closing the Seibu Yurakucho department store in Tokyo.
The Japanese retailer, which runs 7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan and the U.S., as well as upscale Japanese department stores Seibu and Sogo and Ito-Yokado supermarkets, said Wednesday it will shut its Seibu branch in the Yurakucho district on Dec. 25.
The decision follows last year's closure of Seven & i's much bigger Sogo store in Osaka, which was then transferred to Daimaru Inc., a unit of Japan's second largest department store operator J. Front Retailing Co. Seven & i also last year shut a Seibu store in Sapporo, northern Japan.
This is the third deparment store closure for the company in the past two yeras. The Japan Times also has an article on the closure of the department store here.
Disney Store to Open Times Square Store in Fall 2010
Disney Store is opening a retail destination in New York's Times Square in fall 2010. The location is at 1540 Broadway, between 45th and 46th Street. Disney Store will incorporate technologically advanced displays including an interactive Disney Princess castle to serve as one of many magical centerpieces at the new Times Square location. The Times Square store will also contain a children's theater.
"Bringing Disney Store to the center of Times Square is a monumental achievement, and we have created a retail experience that complements the energy and innovation that Times Square inspires," said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. "We're focused on reinvigorating retail and providing a unique shopping destination to millions of families from all over the world who travel to New York for a magical experience."
ShopperTrak is reporting that retail sales climbed 8.8 percent for the week ending December 26 compared to the same period last year. December 26th - the day after Christmas - became the second biggest shopping day of the year. This is not suprising because there were some great deals on the 26th. The biggest shopping day was Black Friday. Here is a list of the top shopping days in 2009.
Ebay Recorded 1.5 Million Mobile Phone Sales During Holidays
Mobile shopping played a major role in eBay.com's holiday sales. The company says 1.5 million items were bought on eBay using mobile phones worldwide this holiday. Ebay says its mobile sales included luxury items like gold buillon, a $10,000 Steinway piano and a Hermes Kelly bag.
"Mobile is changing the way people shop this holiday season," said Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay marketplaces. "With eBay on your iPhone, great deals are available anytime, anywhere. We see consumers taking advantage of that freedom to find great holiday gifts and deals without sitting at their computer or being stuck at the mall. eBay buyers and sellers have rapidly embraced mobile commerce this year, and this holiday season has been a mobile commerce tipping point. Shopping will never be the same again."
Ebay also sold a lot of Zhu Zhu Pets this year. They created a chart here that shows where the company's 200,000 plus Zhu Zhu Pets sales came from in the U.S.
Late Season Surge Helps Retail Sales Gain 3.6% Over Last year
Bloombergreports that data from MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse indicates that holiday retail sales climbed 3.6% over 2008's sales. Electronics were up 5.9% compared to the year before.
A jump in purchases the week before Christmas helped year-over-year electronics sales increase 5.9 percent from Nov. 1 to Dec. 24, MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse said in a statement. Jewelry and luxury sales also gained, the research firm said.
The increase may signal that revenue at retailers will beat trade groups’ forecasts for the two-month period ending Jan. 2. Shoppers resumed purchasing this season as consumer confidence rebounded from a record low in February.
"We saw a nice little surge toward the end of the season," with the pace picking up Dec. 22, 23 and 24, said Michael McNamara, a vice president for research and analysis at SpendingPulse, in a Bloomberg Television interview today. "Last year, we were in critical condition, this year, in stable."
This is good news if it is confirmed by other holiday retail data. The National Retail Federation (NRF) - which predicted sales would decrease 1% this holiday season - has not yet reported data on holiday sales for 2009.
Last Minute Shoppers Flock to Malls After Being Snowed In
Shoppers reportedly hit the malls the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast in large numbers after being snowed in over the weekend. Hopefully, these last minute shoppers were able to find the gifts they needed. Take a look:
Retailers Staying Open Late, Offering Bigger Discounts
Severe weather in the northeast has really hurt retailers this holiday season. Stores are staying open
later tonight and offering even further discounts to lure in shoppers.
Target Corp. extended its hours to midnight Dec. 21 through yesterday. Borders Group Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Toys R Us Inc. also kept stores open longer. Best Buy Co. offered some DVDs for half off and Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc., a men's clothing chain, deepened discounts to at least 50 percent.
"We didn't intend to do everything, and now we're doing everything," Jos. A. Bank Chief Executive Officer Neal Black, 54, said Dec. 22 by telephone from the company's Hampstead, Maryland, headquarters. "We'll be slugging right down to the last minute."

Walmart, the world's largest retailer, will keep most of its 803 discount stores and its Sam's Clubs open until 8 p.m. today, two hours later than last year, said John Simley, a spokesman. Amazon.com Inc. extended by one day, until Dec. 21, its cutoff for standard shipping.
If you decide to brave the malls today you will see big discounts, although the selection may not be that great. Stores have really reduced inventory this holiday season.
Video: Santa Says All Kids Want for Christmas is Electronics
So what are kids asking for from Santa this year? Santa Claus reveals the innermost wishes of children this Christmas to tv station WIVBTV in Western New York state. It's all about the electronics this year. Even the four year olds want cell phones. Take a look:
This holiday retail season is expected to be just as bad -- or worse -- than last year for retailers. One result that customers will see is how much customer service is improving, especially in luxury stores. It's crucial that customers be made to feel welcome and that sales clerks don't scare off customers. The New York Times reports on the extremes that some luxury stores are going to in order to find and keep customers.
If the doorman at Bergdorf Goodman seems a little more cheerful than usual this holiday season, or a salesman at Prada or Hermes offers to find a pair of shoes in your size without rolling an eye, do not act so surprised. Retailers are being extra nice, and not just to the regulars.
"They're offering a glass of Champagne as you enter David Yurman," said Kate Kreindler, a suburban student, referring to the high-priced jewelry store on Madison Avenue. She noticed she was receiving more-attentive service while shopping on that luxury strip on Monday.
A few steps away at Dennis Basso, a fur store, Mr. Basso himself was greeting customers. "It can't hurt," he said. "Stores that don't normally have great customer service are trying harder. They're reaching out and giving that special treatment to the ... " and here, he paused for emphasis, " ... Christmas shopper."
It may be a curious silver lining of the recession, but even a casual browser can expect to be treated like a V.I.P. in high-end stores on Madison and Fifth Avenues once famed for snooty attitudes and imposing facades. Almost every person who has stepped through the gilded revolving doors of Bergdorf recently, whether a tourist or, on Dec. 17, the actress Susan Lucci in a salmon-pink mink, has been given a hero’s welcome, with an honor guard of doting sales associates.
And, yes, those doormen really are cheerier. Jim Gold, the chief executive of the store, said he replaced the security company that hires them "when we found the ones we were using weren't as friendly as we wanted them to be."
The store now devotes its staff meetings every Saturday morning, before it opens, to the subject of customer service. Although Bergdorf was already known for attentive details like sending thank-you notes to customers, several shoppers reported receiving them recently for buying as little as an $18 bottle of nail polish or a lipstick.
It is not just luxury brands that are trying to improve service. The Gap, Macy's and other chains are also coaching sales personnel how to be friendlier and more helpful. Which leads us to wonder: when the recession eventually ends, will some stores go back to having rude sales clerks? Or will this be a permanent change?
Some Maryland and Virginia Shopping Malls Closed Early Because of Winter Storm
Some shopping malls in Maryland and Virgina had to close today at 2:00 p.m. because of the blizzard that has slammed the East Coast on the last shopping weekend before Christmas. Simon Property Group and Westfield Group made the decision due to the terrible weather conditions.
Simon shut its 242-store Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover, Maryland, at 2 p.m. local time today as a storm bore down on the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region, dumping 10 to 20 inches of snow and making roads all but impassable. The mall, whose anchors include Neiman Marcus Last Call and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, will open at its normal time of 11 a.m. tomorrow, according to a statement on its Web site.
All but six specialty stores at Westfield's Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Maryland, are closed and the rest will shut down at 4 p.m. today. Anchor stores Macy's, Sears and Nordstrom plan to remain open, according to the mall's security office.

Simon closed its Potomac Mills mall in Woodbridge, Virginia, at 1 p.m. today. The company is allowing stores to close early at its Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall in Arlington, Virginia, though the mall remains open. The shopping center is served by Washington's Metro public transportation system, which stopped all bus service and shuttered 39 of its 86 rail stations today because of the weather.
Not all malls in the area closed. Tysons Corner Center in Washington is staying open until 11:00 p.m., although not all stores will be open. Be sure to call or check online before you head to the mall if you're in the storm area. And be safe: there have been many accidents and cases of stranded motorists.
