Swine Flu Shuts 433 Schools in United States

It was just a week ago when reports of a new strain of influenza called swine flu started trickling in. Now there are at least 433 schools closed in the United States because of the H1N1 swine flu virus. MSNBC reports that the government has issued new guidelines for schools recommending that they close for at least 14 days if they have a confirmed case. The government says children can remain contagious for as long as 10 days.
The government issued new guidance for schools with confirmed cases, saying they should close for at least 14 days because children can be contagious for seven to 10 days from when they get sick. That means parents can expect to have children at home for longer than previously thought.

The Education Department said that 433 schools had closed, affecting 245,000 children in 17 states. That was about 100 more schools reported closed than reported on Thursday.

Major U.S. airlines, meanwhile, announced plans to curtail flights into flu-ravaged Mexico.
There have been some reports that this novel strain of flu may be milder and less deadly than originally feared. That would certainly be a relief if it turns out to be the case. WHO and CDC officials are still treating the flu with extreme caution. Experts warn that influenza is unpredictable and a week or two from now the picture could look much different than today.

Swine Flu Closes Nearly 300 Schools Nationwide

The Washington Post reports that the H1N1 virus or swine flu virus has already closed nearly 300 schools nationwide. Most of the school closures are in Texas where 147 schools closed when Fort Worth closed its entire school system for ten days.
Nearly 300 schools nationwide were closed yesterday to avoid the spread of swine flu, and education and health officials in the Washington area and elsewhere were working in tandem to reassure worried parents and weigh whether more campuses should be shuttered.

The bulk of the closures were in Texas, where the 147-school Fort Worth system closed for 10 days after confirmation of one case of swine flu at one campus and probable cases at three others. As of noon yesterday, schools in 10 other states reported closures to the U.S. Education Department.
Expect a lot more school closings because many schools are closing if even one case of H1N1 is confirmed. Confirmed cases of swine flu continue to be reported and many states now have suspected cases. You can find some useful online maps that show locations of confirmed swine flu cases here.

Texas School District Closes 14 Schools Due to Swine Flu

KSAT reports that the Texas Department of State Health Services on Sunday announced that it will be closing all 14 schools and district facilities in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District for at least a week due to swine flu. They say several more cases of swine flu have been discovered.
The closure will be in effect for at least a week. The announcement comes one day after health officials announced the closure of Steele High School, where two students contracted the disease and a third case was pending.

All extracurricular activities also were cancelled.

"We don't have lab confirmation for any of the additional flu-like illnesses yet, but we've found enough illnesses associated with some of the other schools that we believe it's prudent to close all of them before classes resume on Monday," said Sandra Guerra, a DSHS regional director and the public health authority for Guadalupe County.
The U.S. declared a Public Health Emergency over swine flu earlier today. Our sister site, HealthNewsBlog.com, is maintaining a list of Swine Flu Resources with links to national and local government swine flu resources and other useful websites.
