Three Apples is an Exhibition Celebrating Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty's ongoing 35th anniversary continues with Sanrio's introduction of Three Apples. Three Apples is an exhibition of all things Hello Kitty running from October 23 to November 15 at the Royal/T in Culver City, California. Royal/T is a 10,000 square foot Japanese-inspired art exhibition space, retail store and "cosplay" maid cafe. This is the first time that Sanrio has produced an event for the Hello Kitty fans in North America. The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge.
Three Apples was named after Hello Kitty's weight, as listed in her official bio. The exhibition features a lineup of over 80 celebrated artists, who have been invited to interpret their creative vision of Hello Kitty in original works that will be on display and for sale. The art exhibition at Three Apples will be curated by Jamie Rivadeneira, owner of JapanLA, a Los Angeles boutique that specializes in "cute" Japanese and American products. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the artwork will benefit L.A. Works.

Hello Kitty Celebrates 35th Anniversary With Hello Kitty Colors
Hello Kitty will celebrate her 35th anniversary this Fall with activities, festivities and new product launches. The worldwide theme for Hello Kitty's 35th Anniversary is "Hello Kitty Colors." Sanrio, the company that licenses Hello Kitty, says the colors convey the "essence of Hello Kitty that has kept her relevant and appealing to devotees for so long." The colors include red for friendship, pink for cute, yellow for heartful, green for wish and lavender for sweet. The message of each color will be reflected on her trademark bow.
"Hello Kitty colors the world and captures the hearts and imaginations of so many people," said Janet Hsu, President of Sanrio Global Consumer Products. "The theme of Hello Kitty's Anniversary is inspired by her legacy and the loving qualities that have resonated with fans from around the world for the past 35 years."
Stores around the world will carry Hello Kitty's 35th anniversary-themed merchandise beginning in September. Hundreds of products affiliated with the milestone will roll out this year, including apparel, jewelry and limited edition collectibles. Kitty35.com is the official webiste for the global Hello Kitty 35th anniversary celebration. A U.S. website for the 35th anniversary will launch in June 2009.

Hello Kitty Online Users Raise $12,000 For Charity By Creating Virtual Food
Users of Hello Kitty Online (HKO) - a virtual world based on Hello Kitty - raised $12,000 for Unicef and the Asian Youth Orchestra. Sanrio Digital, the company behind the Hello Kitty brand, made the charitable donations based on the number of virtual food items players created. Sanrio explains more here.
For those of you who missed it, the basic idea was to craft and a number of food items and hand them in to a GM. Sanrio Digital then made a donation to charity, the amount of which was determined by the total number of crafted food items submitted by players. As you can see this means that the event generated real world charity that was directly proportional to the efforts of the player base.
The Hello Kitty players created 344,965 in-game food items. Allakhazam writes about how the HKO players had to produce the raw materials on their farms before they could make the virtual food items which included lemon pies and strawberry cakes.
From Nov. 1-6, players produced raw materials on their farms and crafted them into food items. Each item carried a different value based on how difficult it was to create that item. Foods included chocolate milk, lemon pies, strawberry cakes, roasted vegetables, oat biscuits and more. This really was a wonderful event. Every MMO should follow Sanrio Digital's lead when it comes to charitable events.
It's a novel way to raise money in a virtual world. Congratulations to the hard working HKO players.
