Retailer Exclusive Album Battles: AC/DC Outperforming Guns N' Roses

ACDC vs GNRExclusive album deals at major retailers emerged as a trend this year. In a tale of two exclusive retailer rock music deals Walmart's choice appears to have been better than Best Buy's. Walmart went with the reliable AC/DC while Best Buy cut an exclusive deal with Axl Rose and Guns N' Roses, whose album Chinese Democracy was its first in a decade. The Wall Street Journal says AC/DC's Black Ice is outselling Chinese Democracy nearly 4 to 1 - 1,055,000 to 318,000.
The disappointing performance of "Chinese Democracy," which was distributed by Universal Music's Interscope Geffen A&M label group, comes at a tough time for Best Buy. The Richfield, Minn., company recently warned that sales for the last third of its fiscal year ending Feb. 28 could fall 5% to 15% from a year earlier. The company is expected to post lower quarterly earnings Tuesday.

Best Buy declined to discuss "Chinese Democracy." In an interview before the album's debut, Gary Arnold, the retailer's senior entertainment officer, predicted it would be the rock record of the year.

Reached for comment, Guns N' Roses manager Irving Azoff predicted the album would ultimately sell well, adding: "The race is far from over."
Walmart's AC/DC campaign has fared much better. The retailer was also wise and paired it with AC/DC t-shirts and other products to boost sales.
Whereas Best Buy backed "Chinese Democracy" with a marketing campaign centered solely on the album, Wal-Mart saw "Black Ice" as a way to sell more than music. The company hawked AC/DC T-shirts and an exclusive AC/DC version of MTV Networks' Rock Band videogame.

"As we looked at AC/DC's loyal fan base, that's when this idea came about: How do we pull in the music with other things?" Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's senior vice president for entertainment and electronics, said in an interview. "Some artists allow you that opportunity."

AC/DC has served as a youth icon for decades. It came into the release of "Black Ice" with the most popular back catalog of any band other than the Beatles, even though its music isn't available through download services such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store.
There will be more albums sold exclusively at specific retailers in 2009 as retailers look for unique ways to get people inside their stores. 2008 has proved that people will come into the store for the albums but it has to be the right album.

Suntory's Beautiful Blue Roses

Suntory Blue RosesThe Telegraph reports that a Japenese company has succeeded in the once thought impossible task of creating a blue rose.
The blooms are genetically modified and have been implanted with a gene that simulates the synthesis of blue pigment in pansies.

The flowers, which were displayed at the International Flower Expo Tokyo, will go on sale commercially next Autumn.

Megumi Mitsunaga, a spokeswoman for IFEX, said: "This is the first time that these blue roses have been put on display in public.

"They are attracting lots of attention here because they are so unusual."
The Mail Online has a couple other photographs of the blue roses in this news story. Suntory - the company that genetically engineered the roses - released this brief history and timeline of the blue roses. They plan to begin selling them in 2009.
The rose boasts a long history, with horticulturalists developing tens of thousands of varieties in an extensive palette including red, white, pink, and yellow. This palette has never included blue because rose does not have the blue pigment, and past attempts to breed this color rose have gone nowhere. With so many disappointments, the term blue rose has become synonymous with the impossible - until 2004, when Suntory and Florigene biotechnology proved successful in developing the "impossible" blue rose. In the process of pursuing the blue rose, Suntory and Florigene also created Moondust, the world's first blue carnation.
  • 1990 Suntory launches joint venture with Australian company Florigene Ltd. to focus on developing blue roses
  • 1995 World's first blue carnations successfully developed
  • 1997 Suntory launches sales of the first blue carnations, named Moondust, in Japan
  • 2004 Blue roses successfully developed
  • 2008 Blue roses granted approval under Cartagena Law
  • 2009 Suntory launches sales of blue roses (planned)

Korbel Garden Opens for 2005

For a light-bodied French champagne, our favorite these days is Perrier Jouet. But if you're looking for a low-priced domestic sparkling wine or American Champagne as the American vintners call it (to the horror of the French wine industry), Korbel is always a good choice. And what's more fun than to tour the wine country? For 2005, Korbel has made some wonderful additions and improvements to its gardens. Korbel says horticulturist Xavier Corral and his team of gardeners have expanded the collection of roses -- 250 varieties strong and counting -- to include two rare two-tone hybrid tea roses. Korbel describes the garden as follows:
To highlight their vibrant blooms amid the towering redwoods that shade the original circa 1882 Korbel Family House, Corral and his team have surrounded the rose plantings with an elegant ground cover of white bachelor buttons and used in the planting beds dark mulch created from Chardonnay grapes crushed for Korbel champagne. Two beautiful fountains have been restored, their gentle murmur enhancing the natural ambience. Half barrels featuring spring annuals and weeping trees (cedar, spruce, pine, birch, beech and cherry), introduced last year in Korbel's public areas and parking lot, have been expanded in number to allow tasting room visitors to share the garden experience.
Korbel says it will be offering free tours of the garden Tuesday through Sunday at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. through mid-October. And of course you can obtain Korbel champagne at the tasting room and a gourmet lunch from the winery's delicatessen. Korbel is located on River Road near Guerneville, California, 14 miles west of Highway 101. Combine this with visits to some of the other fabulous wineries in the area and it sounds like a terrific afternoon -- after you draw straws to see who gets to be the designated driver. Wines & Vines has a good collection of links to California winery websites, if you're feeling like a wine-enhanced vacation.

Valentine's Day Spending to Top $13 Billion

Though consumers will be spending less on average, more people will be celebrating Valentine's Day this year. A survey conducted by BIGresearch for NRF, found that the average consumer will spend $97.27 on Valentine's Day, down slightly from $99.24 last year. However, 61.8 percent of consumers plan to celebrate the holiday, up from 59.8 percent one year ago. In all, 2005 Valentine's Day spending is expected to reach $13.19 billion. Greeting cards remain the most popular Valentine's Day gift this year, with nearly two-thirds (66.9%) of consumers planning to purchase at least one card for the holiday. Nearly half of consumers will celebrate by buying candy (49.4%) or treating themselves to an evening out (47.4%). Additionally, more than half of men (57.8%) plan to buy flowers and one in five (18.1%) plan to purchase jewelry. Last year consumers purchased more than 175 million roses for Valentine's Day, according to the Society of American Florists.
