Reese Witherspoon Speaks at State Department

Reese Witherspoon State Department March 2010

Actress and Avon Global Ambassador Reese Witherspoon speaks at the State Department at the Women of Courage Awards, hosted by Secretary Hilary Clinton and attended by First Lady Michelle Obama. The Avon Foundation for Women presented a $500,000 grant to the U.S. Department of State Secretary's Fund for Global Women's Leadership to accelerate the global movement to end violence against women. The U.S. Department of State will use the grant to fund innovative and breakthrough programs developed by international non-government organizations for the purpose of ending violence against women.

"I am proud to serve as Avon Global Ambassador and represent a company with a conscience and the courage to take on hard issues. Although we face many challenges around the world, nothing is more important than ensuring the safety of women and girls everywhere," said Reese Witherspoon. "Investments like the one announced today by the Avon Foundation and the U.S. Department of State are essential to the development and implementation of programs to end this global crisis."

Katherine Heigl to Play Stephanie Plum in Film Adaptation of Bestselling Books

Photo of Katherine Heigl

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is finally coming to the big screen. The heroine in the New York Times bestselling series by Janet Evanovich will be played by Katherine Heigl. The movie will be titled One For the Money. Variety reports:
Reese Witherspoon was previously attached to take on the role, but the project has been dormant for several years. Heigl's interest has put the project back on the fast track, with Andrea Giannetti overseeing for the studio. Col and Lakeshore will next look to attach a director.

Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing "One for the Money" with Wendy Finerman ("The Devil Wears Prada"). Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith penned the screenplay, and Liz Brixius has been brought onboard to do a polish.
There are fifteen Stephanie Plum novels so far, the latest being Finger Lickin' Fifteen. The 16th novel will be released this summer. We have to admit we never pictured Katherine Heigl as Stephanie, but it could work.

In possibly one of the worst timed featurettes ever, Jake Gyllenhaal stopped by Sesame Street to explain the meaning of the word "separate." Given all the rumor swirling around his and Reese Witherspoon's relationship all we could think was "Awkward!" But really he's just focusing on the fact that he has an octopus on his head that he really needs to remove. Take a look:

Reese Witherspoon Hosted Exclusive London Tea Party

Reese Witherspoon London Tea Party

Avon's Global Ambassador Reese Witherspoon hosted an exclusive tea party for eight Avon independent sales representatives. The tea party was held to celebrate the launch of Reese's debut fragrance for Avon, In Bloom. All guests were treated to a traditional English afternoon tea. It looks like it was a fabulous tea party.

"One of my favorite parts of working with Avon through the years has been the opportunity to meet Avon Representatives from around the world - and it was so rewarding for me today to see their enthusiasm for this launch," says Reese Witherspoon. "In developing In Bloom, I found myself drawn to the scents of my childhood in Tennessee. We had a great big Magnolia tree in the back yard, and it's that beautiful white blossom that inspired the perfume. In Bloom is indicative of where I am in my life today. I'm feeling very strong and independent, and so happy, so full of life. The fragrance truly captures that feeling - it's very sensual, very romantic and alluring."

Reese Witherspoon to Launch New Fragrance in November

Reese Witherspoon In Bloom

WWD reports that Reese Witherspoon is launching her first signature scent through Avon in November called "In Bloom." Notes in the floral fragrance include Georgia peach, magnolia and jasmine.
In Bloom has top notes of Georgia peach, tea leaves and crisp greens; a heart of star gardenia, magnolias and night-blooming jasmine, and a drydown of cashmere woods, hypnotic florals and amber wood crystals.

"It's indicative of where I am today," said Witherspoon. "I'm feeling very strong and independent and so happy. The fragrance really captures that feeling - it's very sensual, very romantic and alluring."

In Bloom will be available in two sizes: A 1.7-oz. eau de parfum for $34, and a 1-oz. limited edition concentrated version for $59. A body mist, body lotion and shower gel also will be available for $15.
WWD cited industry source who think In Bloom could top $15 million in sales its first year. Reese Witherspoon says the South was her inspiration for the scent. Reese says, "I was really drawn by white flowers to get that sense of a steamy night somewhere in the South."

Reese Witherspoon also says the bottle design for In Bloom reminds her of when she used to examine her grandmother's beautiful glass perfume bottles as a child.

Reese Witherspoon Covers Elle Magazine

Photos of Reese Witherspoon in Elle magazine

Reese Witherspoon is on the cover of the April issue of Elle magazine and she looks fabulous. In the feature interview, Reese talks about her divorce, reputation as a control freak, Jake Gyllenhaal and her love of cookies. She sounds very funny and down to earth:

On her divorce: "Very humiliating and very isolating...But, by the way, if it's not painful, maybe it wasn't the right decision to marry to begin with. Those are the appropriate emotions. When people get in your face and say, 'This will pass,' you think, Are they crazy? I'm never gonna feel any better than I feel right this minute and nothing's ever gonna make sense again. And I still have moments where I'm like, Nothings ever gonna make sense again."

On boyfriend, Jake Gyllenhaal: "He's fabulous. He really is a fantastic guy. Unfortunately, he's not in the movie, so we can't really talk about him."

On being a young mother: "When I first had Ava, I couldn't afford [help]. And it was so hard. I was out in Los Angeles, living [away from my family]. I really didn't have any friends. And I had a baby. No one else who was 22 had a baby. I couldn't go out."

On her reported Type A personality: "I don't think I'm a control freak. I think I'm just fearful. I operate from a lot of fear, like, of things being lost or forgotten or neglected. Losing the spiritual rather than the physical. It's so funny to me that somehow I've been portrayed as a very, like, closed-off or uptight person. I'm very open."

On the paparazzi: "Fascination is gonna die off. I honestly know it. But it's just like I keep waiting and waiting, and then it's just more tabloid magazines, and it keeps going. I don't take a shower everyday. I don't put on makeup everyday. I wear a lot of sunglasses, in case you noticed."

On not being diet obsessed: "I'm made of cookies after the holidays. Everything inside me is made of sugar and flour and a little red wine -- a lot of red wine."

2009 Oscars Red Carpet: Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon stepped out of her normal fashion comfort zone last night at the Oscars wearing a cobalt blue and black Rodarte gown, which featured an asymmetrical bodice adorned with intricate black jewels. We loved her look. She accessorized with black nail polish, and jewelry from Fred Leighton, including diamond triple drop earrings with 7 carat old mine cut drops and a diamond ring. She kept her makeup low key with a pale pink gloss on her lips and a smoky eye. Her hair was pulled back in a low, loose chignon, which was one of the preferred styles of the evening. Reese presented the Oscar for Best Director to Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire.

Reese Witherspoon Goes to Japan

Photo of Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon, an Avon Global Ambassador, was the guest of honor at a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony in Tokyo, Japan where she met female breast cancer survivors. Reese was also there to introduce the region to Avon's first-ever global fundraising product, the Women's Empowerment Bracelet.

Prominent kimono dresser, Midori Yogi, created the gorgeous kimono that Reese were. Ms. Yogi's family has dressed the Japanese Imperial Family for weddings since 1952.

There are very high rates of breast cancer in Japan and the Asia Pacific region and the organizers of the event hope to raise awareness of breast cancer and to discuss the shortage of screening facilities.

"As Avon's Global Ambassador, I'm honored to have this opportunity to meet with such extraordinary women, and experience a highlight of Japanese culture" said Reese. "While their courage is inspiring, I was saddened to hear that only about 12% of women in Japan receive regular breast cancer screening. The lack of testing equipment and breast cancer experts in Japan means that many women here do not have access to the medical technology and care that is critical to diagnose and fight this deadly disease."

Reese is doing a really great thing here. If you'd like to buy the bracelet, you can find it at Avon.com. The bracelet costs $3 and all proceeds go into the Avon Empowerment Fund, a fund dedicated to helping fight violence against women.

"I am very excited to be partnering with the Avon Foundation and to help them continue to affect real change," stated Reese. "I feel a great responsibility in my own life to give back to society. As the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, one of my first experiences last year was to meet Avon Walk walkers at a training walk in Los Angeles. Now I am proud to support the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer here in Washington, D.C. and hope my presence can in some measure express my deep appreciation for all the women and men who participate in the Avon Walks, and for all of the people who dedicate their lives to breast cancer research and care."

Reese served lunch to the walkers, talked with participants and joined the walk for the last leg before participating in the Closing Ceremonies. It's an important cause: you can find out more about the Avon Foundation here.

Reese Witherspoon is Avon's New Global Ambassador

Photo of Reese WitherspoonOscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon has been chosen to be the firs Global Ambassador for Avon. Reese will be the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, focusing on breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief initiatives. She will also represent the beauty brand and its products.

"We are thrilled to welcome Reese as our Global Ambassador and believe she will give a strong voice to the company's commitment to empowering women," said Andrea Jung, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Avon Products, Inc. "As the company for women, Avon wanted to partner with someone who could represent not only our world-famous beauty brand, but also could be a source of inspiration for our more than 5 million Avon Representatives around the world - and Reese is a perfect fit. She is an accomplished actress, a successful producer and a working mother - and clearly embodies the drive, the commitment and entrepreneurial spirit that is at the heart of the Avon Representative."

"Our partnership with Reese represents a breakthrough moment for our company - and comes just months after the launch of our successful Hello Tomorrow campaign, which signaled a true evolution for the Avon brand," said Geralyn Breig, Senior Vice President and Global Brand President, Avon Products, Inc. "This is the first time we have had celebrity representation on all three dimensions of our business - our philanthropic initiatives, our brand, and the Avon Representative - and we are incredibly excited to have someone of Reese's talent and stature add her voice to Avon's message to help bring it to the world."

"I am very excited to be partnering with Avon. Avon is more than an iconic world class beauty leader - it is a company that is known the world over as a crusader for women's causes," Reese said. "I am truly impressed by how Avon has been able to effect real change in the communities in which it does business, and by how committed the company is to providing economic and personal fulfillment to women all over the world. I feel a great responsibility in my own life to give back to society. Now, as the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, I am proud to be joining in the great philanthropic work that is already underway."

It's an interesting new trend: major companies are naming not just a new face for the products, but having the spokesperson also head up the company's philanthropic endeavors. We're sure Reese will do an outstanding job. She looks lovely, is a wonderful mom and an excellent actress. No doubt it did not escape Avon's Board of Directors that Reese a) wears panties when she leaves the house; b) eschews recreational drugs and c) has never made a porn tape.
