Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores Launches Student Design Contest

Joann Prom Design Contest

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has launched "Own Your Look, Own Your Future," a design contest that encourages teens to make their own prom outfit. Those enterting will have an opportunity to win $50,000 cash for college or one of nine other cash prizes. Jo-Ann's says the contest is to encourage the "next generation of sewers."

"We want to encourage the next generation of sewers," said Michelle Christensen, vice president, general merchandise manager, at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. "There's a renewed interest in sewing among young people. More teens are signing up for sewing classes. We want to support them to not only learn the skills, but to bring their own creativity to the projects they make."

To inspire young designers, Jo-Ann has three different looks posted on the prom contest page: classic elegance, glitzy glamour and alternative chic. Each look shows a dress, a purse and one other accessory. The dresses were all created from one pattern to illustrate the customization possible through creative interpretation and fabric selection.

The contest is open to students ages 14-19. The contest runs through June 15, 2010. You can find more details here.

Jon and Kate Gosselin to Announce Life-Changing Decision

A TLC promo video says that Jon & Kate Gosselin will be announcing a "life-changing decision" on Monday's episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8.

"Recently we've made some life-changing decisions," says Kate. "Decisions that will affect every member of our family, ones that we hope will bring each of us some peace."

Ratings have been sliding for the show so it could be an attempt to boost ratings but the promo certainly suggests that a genuine life-altering decision will be announced.

Searching for the Perfect Prom Dress

The recession is affecting how teens will choose a prom dress this year. Price is a key factor, but there are other consideration -- such as making sure that you don't turn up in the same dress as someone else in your class.
When it comes to prom, teens still crave a little glitz and glamour — even if it's on a tight budget. No matter what the trend -- bold prints, bright colors, back detail, beading and crystals, cocktail dresses or long elaborate gowns — a range in price points is key this year, with some retailers offering dresses for as low as $50. Stores are also clammering for teen attention by having in-store events where shoppers can walk away with goody bags in addition to their dress.

Teens have been cruising the stores for months in hopes of finding that dream dress for prom. And, as it turns out, once they have it -- no one better buy the same one. Teens are getting superserious about making sure their dresses are indeed one-of-a-kind, even setting up groups on Facebook that allow fellow classmates to post photos of their dresses. One example is a Facebook group from Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, N.Y. The group, called "HGHS Prom Dresses '09," encourages all girls at the school to post their dress choices on the page so no two dresses will be alike. The labels they’ve purchased (and posted) include BCBG Max Azria, Nicole Miller, A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz, Dina Bar-el, Tadashi and Niteline.

"I bought my prom dress a few weeks ago," said Ali Peikon, a junior at the school. "I couldn't find a picture online, so I wrote the designer name [Bianca Nero] and color [black and cream] on the group wall." Another group, called "Bitch That's My Prom Dress!" started by a student at John F. Ross CVI in Ontario, Canada, encourages students to post photos in order to "avoid some catfights on the night of prom…because I sure as hell would start one with a girl wearing my dress," the group's creator writes.
Retailers are offering lost of deals on prom dresses because of falling consumer demand. Because prom dresses are usually only worn once, retailers believe that even affluent customers will be spending less on that special dress this year.

Taylor Swift Donates Her Prom Dress to DonateMyDress.org

Taylor Swift Prom Dress Photo

Taylor Swift has has donated her prom dress to DonateMyDress.org, a national campaign designed to encourage girls around the country to donate their prom and special occasion dresses to those who cannot afford to finance the costly experience of going to their prom. People reports that Taylor Swift donated her cream and gold Jessica McClintock gown to the DonateMyDress.org cause. Taylor posed in the photograph above with her best friend Abigail Anderson.

Taylor says, "I chose to give away this prom dress because I wore it once and loved it! To keep it around, hanging there all by itself and lonely in my closet, never to be worn again seemed a little pointless. I want another girl somewhere to feel good in it and have a great prom night because of this dress."

Donations are Down at the Cinderella Project

Donations to the Cinderella Project in South Central Los Angeles are way down because of the recession, which is a real shame. The charity takes donations of gently used party dresses and gives them to girls who can't afford a prom dress. But some companies who make donations are wondering if going to prom is frivolous during a recession.
For any charity, making the case for its mission in the face of other needs is the greatest challenge. Even as the Cinderella Project -- whose goals are shared by a number of often similarly named organizations around the country -- prepares for prom season this spring, many people in the world face famine and war. Is it frivolous to help girls attend their prom?

The answer is complex. For affluent kids, a prom is a fun party. But for teens like Miss Preston, it can be a rare opportunity to step into another world -- dressed appropriately -- and shine. Lives are the sum of individual experiences that either build us up or tear us down, and prom night has special potential.

"One night like this can literally change the way a girl sees herself socially," says Gloria Baume, fashion director of Teen Vogue magazine. "You cannot imagine how many of these girls have never worn a pair of heels or a beautiful dress."

For many of these 17-year-olds, the Cinderella story has real resonance. "You see these girls who look like hard-core bangers and then they're like, 'How should I do my hair?'" says Florence Azria, a Beverly Hills resident and founder of TheShoeGoddess.com blog.

Ms. Azria has been volunteering for eight years at A Place Called Home. The community center sits on the border of several L.A. gang territories in an area where fourth graders are often recruited into entry-level gang affiliations. Drive-by shootings are so common that A Place Called Home is devoid of street-level windows. A sign inside the entrance asks the 1,400 child members who participate in the center's programs to leave their gang colors and affiliations outside. It can be strange to realize how close this gangland area exists to Beverly Hills and Hollywood, just a 15-minute drive away.
There's nothing frivolous about helping a financially challenged girl go to her prom wearing a nice outfit, probably for the first time in her life. The real problem here is that corporations are cutting back on donations as profits fall and workers are laid off, because of the economy
