Oscar de la Renta Gets Fragrance License Back from L'Oreal

WWD reports that Oscar de la Renta once again owns the license to its signature fragrances. A long, messy lawsuit was just settled between Oscar de la Renta Ltd. and L'Oreal, which owns Elizabeth Arden and YSL Beaute. YSL Beaute owned the fragrance license for Oscar de la Renta perfumes.

The dispute started when Elizabeth Arden sold sample sizes of Oscar perfume to Wal-Mart. Furious at practice, Oscar sued. Elizabeth Arden said that YSL Beaute owned the license and it had been getting the samples from the company to sell for years. After lots of attorneys' fees and a lengthy arbitration everything was sorted out.

Oscar de la Renta gets its $30 million a year business back, everyone must pay their own attorneys fees and you won't be seeing Oscar samples in Wal-Mart any more.

Pretty Woman Song Becomes a Fragrance

Pretty Woman Perfume

Barbara Orbison has launched a perfume named "Pretty Woman" after Roy Orbison's well-known song. Barbara Orbison, the widow of the late singer, wrote about the perfum on the Pretty Women perfume website.
fter all these years of mixing my own perfume (which I have been dabbling in since finding this scent when I was thirteen years old), perfecting it throughout my life and marriage to Roy - it's finally here and I can't wait for you to try it.

I feel a scent should be mysterious and draw the world into you. I'm always being asked over and over again, “what are you wearing?” Now at last I’m able to share my secret with you!
A press release says the fragrance contains notes of florals, spices and woods.
Barbara was involved in every step of the development of the fragrance from its bottle design in Paris to the formulation of the scent. Like the notes of a song, the fragrance opens to reveal a melody of florals, spices and woods. The top note introduces a crisp bergamot accent and it continues with a vivacious middle note blend of stargazer lily, red rose and carnation, releasing a base note that is a harmonious mixture of fresh amber, patchouli, vanilla, atlas cedar and sacred incense.
The perfume costs $80 and can be purchased at The Cardinal Boutique and a the Pretty Women perfume website. A portion of the proceeds from the perfume sales will be donated to the Renal Cancer Research Department at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Bond No. 9 Launches Harrods for Him and Harrods for Her Scents

Harrods for Him and Harrods for Her

New York perfume house Bond No. 9 has launched new Harrods for Him and Harrods for Her scents. The Bond No. 9 Harrods for Him fragrance is described as a herbaceous and woody scent.
Bond No. 9 Harrods for Him is an elegant male fougθre (herbaceous and woody scent) that has been updated with gourmand accent flavours. Classic lavender, violet leaf, sandalwood, and musk mingle with rhubarb, star anise, chamomile, and pimento leaves. The result is an engaging earthy scent with a piquant edge that captures the attention.
The Bond No. 9 Harrods for Her fragrance is described as a tuberose noir.
The key note in Harrods for Her is tuberose. This classic floral note is given a chic twist, pairing it with leather to create a tuberose noir. Zesty sidekicks including neroli, mandarin, chamomile, clary sage, and nutmeg are held in a seductive base of amber, sandalwood, and vetiver. The result is an uplifting scent with a warm, engaging depth and a refined yet fashion-forward character.
Each of the perfumes retails for 100 pounds for a 50ml bottle.

WWD has more details about the new Bond fragrances here.

Prada to Launch L'Eeau Ambree this Fall

Ad for Prada L'eau Ambree

Prada's newest fragrance will launch this fall. Called L'Eau Ambree, the fragrance is based upon a new interpretation of amber.
L'Eau Ambree, concocted by Firmenich's Daniela Andrier, has top notes of Sicilian citrus, a heart of may rose and a drydown of patchouli, vanilla and opoponax. The bottle, a reinterpretation of the classic Prada signature bottle, is done in gradated shades of gray and black with the Prada logo embossed in gold; a gold-toned plate and neck are topped by a black atomizer. Outer packaging is white, with the Prada logo done twice: one in black, which is printed on the box, and again with a gold lame label inserted above the printed logo.

In the U.S., L'Eau Ambree will be available in September in about 250 specialty store doors, including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and selected Bloomingdale's. In 2010, the U.S. distribution will expand to include about 1,000 department and specialty store doors. The fragrance will also launch in Europe this fall, followed by the Middle East and Asia in 2010.

The collection includes three eaux de parfum: 30 ml. for $58; 50 ml. for $76; 80 ml. for $104, and an 80-ml. deluxe rechargeable version for $117. Ancillaries include a body powder with puff, 3.5 oz. for $62; a hydrating body lotion, 6.75 oz. for $50; a 6.75-oz. shower gel for $44, and a 6.75-oz. body cream, $62. markets.
The company is projecting sales in the $140 million range during the first year the fragrance is for sale.

Kate Moss is the Face of YSL's Parisienne

Photo of Kate Moss

Kate Moss is the face of Yves Saint Laurent's new fragrance, Parisienne, which will be launched this summer.
"You don't have to be born in Paris to be Parisienne," explained Renaud de Lesquen, president of YSL Beaute, part of L'Oreal's luxury division. "It's a state of mind," continued Nathalie Duran, YSL Beaute's deputy managing director. To underscore that point, Brit Kate Moss was chosen to bring her brand of je ne sais quoi to the Parisienne scent's advertising campaign. In the still shot by Craig McDean, she stands on a Parisian bridge at dawn with the Eiffel Tower silhouetted in the background. "Kate Moss is not afraid to live and to love," said Duran, adding she is emblematic of the spirit of carpe diem threading throughout the entire project. "She's really the definition of the particular woman we wanted."

*****

It's considered by the executives to be a totally new story, one told most graphically and erotically through the ad's film version, shot by Fabien Baron, which recounts the story of a woman (Moss) leaving an apartment in Paris' early morning hours. "She has taken a rose and by smelling and playing with the flower, she remembers the night of love she has just had a few hours before," said Duran.
Yves Saint Laurent launched the fragrance Paris in 1983 and certainly Parisienne is a nod to that still popular fragrance. As for the ad film, it sounds very French.

Faith Hill Talks About Her New Fragrance

Photo of Faith Hill

Faith Hill told WWD that she is really looking forward to the launch of her first fragrance, which will debut this October.
"Coty approached me a very long time ago about a fragrance of my own — it felt like a natural thing," said a Prada-clad Hill, who also has five Grammys, 13 number-one singles and has sold 30 million albums, during an interview at a Chelsea town house Thursday afternoon. "I'm pretty picky when it comes to fragrance — I don't wear a lot of it, and I haven't worn a lot in the past. I wanted to be able to create this scent, to be involved with the lab, choosing the notes, and everything. Talk about an awakening as to how it's all put together — the subtlety and difference that one drop can make. I wanted it to be clean and sensual, but last for a long time.

Hill said she usually has worn lotion in the past and noted Narciso Rodriguez Musk and Jo Malone's Red Roses body lotion have been favorites for years. "My children [daughters Audrey, Gracie and Maggie] have commented over the years — 'Oh, Mom, the bed or sweater or whatever smells just like you.' That's the feeling I was after. And talk about an awakening about how it all comes together — it was amazing to me the subtle differences that even one drop of oil could create. It was a lot more involved than I expected, but I couldn't imagine having my name on a fragrance I didn't create. If you are going to put your name on something, you want it to really represent you."
Faith said she loves Southern magnolia and wanted it included in the fragrance as a middle note. She also loved the flower neroli that she was surprised to find out is the most expensive ingredient in the fragrance. In addition to magnolia and neroli, the fragrance included scents of peony, crisp pear, and for the bottom notes cashmere musk and vetiver. She said it took a long time to create it, but she loves the result.

The fragrance will be sold at mass market retailers, such as J.C. Penney, Ulta and Wal-Mart.

Marc Jacobs Launching New Fragrance

Photo of ad for Lola

Marc Jacobs is launching a new fragrance named Lola.
The new women's fragrance is due out in the fall and brings a whole new personality to the party. "Where Daisy is more innocent and sweet, Lola is more sensual — the name conjures up a flirtatious, warm spirit," said the designer in a phone interview Wednesday. "It was the first thing that came to my mind, and I was very insistent with Coty that this had to be the concept. It just felt natural in contrast to Daisy."

Where Daisy Marc Jacobs — which was launched in 2007 and helped catapult the designer's fragrance house to worldwide prominence — works its girlish charm, Lola is intended to be the confident and slightly vampy older sister, the designer added.

The distinction was particularly important to Jacobs, who sees fragrance as an integral part of a person's style. "Fragrance is just as important as accessories, bags and shoes are," said Jacobs. "Not only does it help set a mood, it's a luxury you can have no matter what your size or height or wallet. I'm happy to keep offering more choices. I know I like to rotate fragrances depending on my mood."

Lola, which Jacobs developed with Calice Becker of Givaudan and Ann Gottlieb, opens with pink peppercorn, pear d'anjou and ruby red grapefruit. Its heart is of fuchsia peony, rose and geranium, and the drydown is of vanilla, tonka bean and creamy musk.
Bloomingdale's will carry the fragrance exclusively for one month starting in August. After August, the fragrance will be available at major department and specialty stores and go global.

Michael Kors Goes Very Hollywood

Photo of Michael Kors Very Hollywood ad

Michael Kors is launching his third major fragrance this September. The new fragrance is called Very Hollywood.
"Hollywood glamour is the ultimate escape," said the designer during an interview at his Manhattan showroom Tuesday. "It is an emotional pull, no matter what your age — which gave us the idea for this fragrance. Everyone needs a little escape these days."

*****

The designer likens his first, Michael, to "the little black dress — it has classic, universal appeal," he said of the fragrance, launched in 2000. (A bridge scent called Kors launched in 2003 and is no longer sold.) His second major franchise, Island — which has included a handful of flankers since the original's 2005 launch — he compared with "a cool collection of crisp white shirts." As for Very Hollywood, "this is the indulgence. This is the gold dress!" But, he hastens to add, it's not necessarily a nighttime fragrance. "It's more of a mood," he said. "This is definitely not the customer's sporty moment."

Very Hollywood, concocted by Kors and the Estee Lauder Cos. Inc.'s Evelyn Lauder and Trudi Loren in cooperation with International Flavors & Fragrances, is a sophisticated floral. Top notes are of mandarin and iced bergamot; the heart is of wet jasmine, ylang-ylang, raspberry and gardenia, and the drydown is of Italian orris, creamy amber, soft white moss and vetiver. "This is the most glamorous, indulgent scent we've ever done," said Kors, adding that he thinks the sunny Southern California landscape adds optimism to the mix.
The fragrance bottle is made of glass that has been molded to look like the flashbulbs from, the 50s and 60s. The eau de parfum comes in three sizes, 1 oz., 1.7 oz. and 3.4 oz., and will retail for for $45, $65 and $85. There will also be a $300 version of the perfume that comes in a one ounce size.

The collection has some unusual and interesting ancillary products, such a s a pen with ink that is scented with the fragrance, a cocktail ring with a solid perfume, scented lotion, and some gift sets for the holidays that will include false eyelashes or a gold clutch.

Patrick Robinson, who is overseeing the project, told Fashion Week Daily that the perfume is composed of salty citrus, florals, sandalwood and vanilla.

Avril Lavigne to Launch Black Star Perfume

Avril Lavigne Black Star Perfume

Avril Lavigne has partnered with Procter & Gamble Prestige Products to launch a new fragrance this summer. The perfume's black and pink packaging carry Avril's punk princess style. Avril does have a song called "Punk Princess." WWD says the bottle of Avril's new perfume contains a "studded ring around its neck reminiscent of punk-style jewelry, which may be removed and worn as a ring or a pendant."

Avril blogged about the new perfume earlier this month.

"It will be available across Europe this summer, and soon in the US and Canada," she said in a post on her official website.

"It has been a pretty cool experience. It's so me in a bottle.... hahaha! I love the packaging... And I can't wait to share it with you! More to come very soon."
Avril's perfume will cell for $21.80 for a 15-ml. eau de parfum spray. Other celebrities that Procter & Gamble Prestige Products have partnered with for fragrances include Christina Aguilera and Naomi Campbell. Just Jared has photos from the campaign's photo shoot here. The Scented Salamander has some pictures from a story board for a Black Star commercial.
