Global Shipments of PCs Expected to Fall in 2009

HP p6150t desktopDealerscope reports that iSuppli is projecting total global shipments of PCs to fall by 4% in 2009. This would be the first drop in PC sales since 2001.
iSuppli projected the number for 2009 at 287.3 million units, a 4 percent drop from 2008's total of 299.2 million. The firm attributed the likely drop to both weak sales of desktop computers and a decline in IT spending.

"An annual decline in unit shipments is highly unusual in the PC market," iSuppli's principal analyst, compute platforms, Matthew Wilkins, said as part of the announcement. "Even in weak years, PC unit shipments typically rise by single-digit percentages."
The recession combined with people using more portable devices for their computing needs like desktops and smartphones is likely behind the PC desktop sales drop.

February Data Shows PC Sales Climbed While Mac Sales Fell

Apple iMacSales data from NPD for February indicates that sales of PCs are climbing significantly while sales of Apple's Macs are falling.
  • Unit sales of Macbook laptops fell 7%, while Windows laptops sales were up 36%.
  • Mac desktop unit sales fell 36%, while Windows-based desktops dropped only 10%.
NPD analyst Steve Baker says it is the pricing that is hurting Apple's sales during the recession.
NPD analyst Steve Baker said Apple's high-priced products are proving to be a tougher sell as U.S. consumers struggle through a crippling recession.

"I think the issue for them remains pricing in this kind of an environment," he said.

However, Baker noted that "demand is difficult everywhere ... even though Apple unit volumes may be challenged right now, at the end of the day, they're a lot more likely to be profitable than other manufacturers."
Dealerscope says a fall for Apple's Mac sales was anticipated because buyers knew Apple was updating its iMac and Mac mini lines earlier this month.

Maybe the new Mac upgrades will help Apple but iPod sales also slid 16% in February. The NPD analyst might be correct that it is more of a pricing issue with Apple's products in this tough economic climate.
