Friday the 13th Slays the Competition
The decidedly unromantic remake of an old slasher movie won the Valentine weekened box office. The Friday the 13th horror film received a boost by opening on Friday the 13th. Reuters asks, "What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than to watch college kids get slaughtered in a remake of Friday the 13th?"
He's Just Not That Into You had a strong second week bringing in nearly $20 million. It was followed by the kidnap thriller, Taken. Sadly, Shopaholic, a comedy starring Isla Fisher, only opened in fourth place. Coraline, a film based on Neil Gaiman's children's book held strong with a fifth place finish. Paul Blart: Mall Cop is still hanging around. The surprise hit came in 6th and has now made over $110 million.

Kidnap Thriller Taken Tops the Box Office
Liam Neeson has topped the box office with his thriller, Taken. In Taken, Liam Neeson plays a former government operative who has to rescue his daughter from slave traders after she is kidnapped. Reuters says the film was seen by a mix of men and women.
"Taken" grabbed $24.6 million in just under 3,200 theaters, for an average of about $7,700 per theater, and it played to a mix of men and women, said a spokesman for its distributor, 20th Century Fox. Fox is a unit of News Corp..
With the media's spotlight on professional football's Super Bowl, overall weekend ticket sales of $103 million for the top 12 films were off 20 percent from the last weekend, and only slightly ahead of the same weekend last year, according to box office tracker Media by Numbers.
The strongly performing Paul Blart: Mall Cop came in at number two after winning the box office for two weeks straight. The film's success has Sony seeking more Paul Blart. The Uninvited, a horror flick, came in in the third spot.

Mall Cop is Number One Movie
Kevin James has the number one hit at the box office with his comedy Mall Cop. Think of the film as a comedic Die Hard that takes place in a mall. It's the first hit opener for James where he has the lead role.
The movie thus becomes James' latest big-screen success (after Hitch and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), and it's his first hit opener as the main lead star. Too, this marks the second success that Adam Sandler has had as a producer in less than a month: His Bedtime Stories has grossed $103.7 million since debuting on Christmas day.
Credit likely goes as much to James' growing appeal as to the film's broad reach: According to CinemaScore, the comedy (which got an okay grade of B) drew an audience comprised of all "four quadrants" -- older men, older women, younger men, and younger women.
Right behind Paul Blart: Mall Cop was Eastwood's Gran Torino, which has been doing well at the box office.
