Oscars 2010 Virginia Madsen

Virginia Madsen wore a navy and black bustier gown with a softly draped silk chiffon overlay bodice and Chantilly lace ribbons designed by Kevan Hall to the 82nd Academy Awards. Virginia was one of stars who nearly got caught in the rain. The Chicago Sun-Times quotes Virgina as saying, "I'm from Chicago. I can take a little rainstorm like this, but I'm not sure my dress can!" Fortunately, an Academy staffer wielding an umbrella arrived to assist her.

Oscars Boost Expected for The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker DVDThe Hurt Locker movie won both the Best Director and Best Picture awards the 82nd Academy Awards. Films that win Best Picture typically see a boost in box office revenues and in DVD sales. Bloomberg reports that analysts expect the film's box office sales to double. The film has only made $21.4 million at the box office worldwide so doubling ticket sales will not be that significant.
Expanding the film to 1,000 theaters in the next few weeks would boost its worldwide box-office sales to an estimated $40 million, said David Joyce, an analyst with Miller Tabak & Co. in New York. The movie has taken in $21.4 million in global ticket sales since its June 26 release, according to Box Office Mojo, a researcher based in Sherman Oaks, California.
The Oscar box office bump is probably expected to be low because The Hurt Locker has been available on DVD since January. The Bloomberg article does cite media analyst Hal Vogel, who thinks the film could sell another 1 million DVDs, which would be very significant. This would be in addition to the 725,000 Hurt Locker DVDs that have already been sold.

Academy Defends Farrah Fawcett Omission

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not forget to mention Farrah Fawcett during the "In Memoriam" segment at the Oscars Sunday night. The Academy says Farrah Fawcett is best known for her "remarkable television work" and that it is impossible to mention everybody. However, many in the film industry felt she deserved a mention.

Roger Ebert called the miss a major fail. Ryan O'Neal said, "It was a terrible decision and very hurtful. Farrah was a member of the Academy for over 40 years and we could not believe she did not get a mention."

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences executive director Bruce Davis said he wasn't surprised that friends and family members are upset. The BBC quotes Davis as saying, "There's nothing you can say to people, particularly to family members, within a day or two of the show that helps at all."

Kathryn Bigelow: First Woman to Win Best Director Oscar

Kathryn Bigelow Holds Oscars

The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow became the first women to win a Best Director Oscar when she won the Academy Award Sunday night. Kathryn is also holding a Best Picture Oscar in the photograph above. It has taken an extraordinarily long time for a woman to win on Oscar in the Best Picture category. The award was presented by Barbra Streisand. A powerful, character driven movie about one man's addiction to war, The Hurt Locker deserved the Best Picture win. If you haven't seen it, be sure to pick up the DVD. Jeremy Renner is fantastic in it, and Evangeline Lilly has a small part.

Kathryn definitely deserved the win. During her acceptance speech Kathryn dedicated the Oscar to the troops. She said, "I'd just like to dedicate this to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world. And may they come home safe." The red rubber bracelet on her arm is a reminder of the charity she supports, The Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation. The non-profit organization provides assistance to wounded Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians and their families in the form of financial relief. The film centers around members of a team of EOD technicians stationed in Iraq.

Kathryn Bigelow talked to E News very briefly after the Oscars at the Governors Ball. Take a look:

2010 Oscar Fashions: Miley Cyrus and Amanda Seyfried

Photo of Miley Cyrus and Amanda Seyfried

Miley wore a champagne colored Jenny Packham gown which featured a bustier style bodice and a full skirt embellished with crystals. Vogue reports that the gown is a custom-made version of this gown from Jenny's Spring/Summer 2010 collection which was shown in London. The runway version of the dress has a sheer white chiffon overlay at the top and ties at the neck. We love the way Jenny modified the dress, and like it better without the overlay.

Miley accessorized the look with bronzed diamond and ruby earrings, a 200-carat bronzed diamond corset cuff bracelet and a 10-carat ruby ring, all by Lorraine Schwartz. Miley wore her hair in an updo and looked really beautiful. If only she would stand up straight! That was driving us crazy from the moment we saw her. But other than that, she looked fabulous.

Amanda looked lovely in a mint green Armani Prive gown which was encrusted with Swarovski crystals. Amanda wore her hair in a tight bun and accessorized with blackened platinum diamond earrings, 250-carat brown, champagne and mint diamond geometric bracelets and a brown diamond ball ring, all by Lorraine Schwartz.

Neil Patrick Harris Opens 2010 Oscars With Song and Dance

Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris performed a short, entertaining song and dance number to open the 82nd Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre last night. In his performance, NPH explained why the Oscar telecast had two hosts: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
Why wouldn't Crosby give up Hope?
Why does Harold call Kumar when he scores dope?
And why does a prisoner drop the soap?
'Cause no one wants to do it alone
Neil Patrick Harris also said "You can't take James Cameron from his CGI." You can read the full lyrics here.
