Video: Joan Rivers' Greatest Celebrity Fashion Smackdowns

Remember when Joan Rivers was allowed to rip celebrities apart for their unfortunate fashion choices on the red carpet? Well, E! put together this clip of some of Joan's greatest hits. She's vicious. She's cruel. She's Joan. Take a look:

2009 Oscars Red Carpet: Angelina Jolie

Photo of Angelina Jolie

Best Actress nominee Angelina Jolie walked the red carpet at the Oscars last night with partner Brad Pitt. Angelina wore a simple black draped strapless Elie Saab Couture gown. She accessorized with gorgeous emeralds from Lorraine Schwartz: a 65-carat Colombian emerald ring and 115-carat emerald drop earrings. Angie wore gold Ferragamo high heeled sandals and carried a Lana Marks clutch.

2009 Oscars Red Carpet: Nicole Kidman

Photo of Nicole Kidman

Although she didn't actually walk the red carpet, Nicole Kidman was onstage at the Oscars as a presenter. Nicole gave tribute to Angelina Jolie's performance in Changeling as part of the revamped presentation of the Best Actress Oscar (which went to Kate Winslet). Nicole looked stunning in a feathered white strapless L'Wrenn Scott gown. Nicole accessorized with heeled sandals from L'Wren Scott and earrings from Edith Webber Antiques.

Tim Gunn to do Red Carpet Commentary for ABC

Tim GunnWell, this is some exciting red carpet news: Tim Gunn will be doing red carpet commentary for ABC this year.
Producers say ABC morning news co-anchor Robin Roberts, fashion guru Tim Gunn and EW managing editor Jess Cagle will host the official Academy Awards pre-show, "Oscars Red Carpet 2009." They will interview celebrities and talk fashion and film during the 30-minute live program.

Gunn, who also serves as chief creative officer at Liz Claiborne Inc., says the Oscars are "the ultimate fashion show." The Oscars will air live from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 22.
We usually watch E! right up until the show starts, but this year we'll switch to ABC solely to see Tim. Although we're not sure whose dresses he'll be commenting on because the Academy has lost its collective mind and is not allowing the presenters to walk the red carpet. Well, the nominees will be there. Still, it's infuriating.

2008 Oscar Fashions That Worked: Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman

Photo of Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman

Expectant mom Cate Blanchett was nominated for two awards at the Oscars: or Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Alas, she didn't win either one. But she looked fabulous in a dark blue satin gown by Dried Van Noten. She accessorized the look with a gorgeous necklace by Lorraine Schwartz and a Roger Vivier clutch. Nicole Kidman, who is also expecting, looked stunning as usual. She wore a custom-made black Balenciaga gown and a 1,399-carat diamond necklace designed by L'Wren Scott. Her clutch was by Bottega Veneta. Husband Keith Urban stuck close by as her led her down the red carpet.

2008 Oscar Fashions That Worked: Renee Zellweger and Katherine Heigl

Photo of Renee Zellweger and Katherine Heigl

Renee Zellweger looked positively ethereal in a stunning silver hand embroidered Carolina Herrera gown. She accessorized with a gorgeous Cartier diamond pin and no other jewelry. We like her short haircut: it's fun and flatters her face. Katherine Heigl looked every inch the movie star with her Marilyn Monroe hairdo and red lipstick. Her silk georgette column gown was by Escada. She finished off the look with jewelry by Ryan Ryan and Jimmy Choo shoes.

2008 Oscar Fashions That Worked: Anne Hathaway and Penelope Cruz

Photo of Anne Hathaway and Penelope Cruz at 2008 Academy Awards

Anne Hathaway looked amazing in a goddess-style red gown by Marchesa. She accessorized with Harry Winston diamonds and red lipstick. Karl Lagerfeld (for Chanel Haute Couture) personally designed Penelope Cruz's incredible navy blue, feathered and embroidered gown. Penelope completed the look with Chopard diamonds and a Roger Vivier clutch.

2007 Oscar Fashions That Worked, Part 3

Photo of Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez at 2007 OscarsHelen Mirren, who picked up the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, looked fabulous in a champagne colored Christian Lacroix bejeweled gown, which featured gold-leaf embroidery on the skirt, long sleeves and a plunging neckline. Her diamonds -- large earrings and a 62 carat brooch, were by Chopard. The jewels had their own bodyguards, who retrieved the diamonds at the end of the evening. Mirren called the gown her "dream dress", saying, "It shows me. It makes me feel comfortable. I don't feel like I'm trying to be something I'm not." She also noted that the dress was highly constructed inside: she went sans underwear for the evening. Which was perhaps a little too much information to share, but she was excited and had just won an Oscar, so perhaps her oversharing was understandable.

Last year, Charlize Theron was roundly criticized for wearing a blue gown with a giant bow on her shoulder. But this year, Nicole Kidman embraced the bow and pulled it off with elan. Her red silk crepe Balenciaga column dress fetured a halter-style top with an oversized bow at the neck. She accessorized with a custom L'Wren Scott diamond bracelet and long, straight blond hair which she wore pulled to one side (the better to showcase the bow). She looked stunning. We're not ususally a big fan of the "redheads wearing red" thing, but she pulled it off, looking as elegant and glamorous as she usually does.

Jennifer Lopez went with a crystal-encrusted, lilac silk Marchesa gown, which featured a gorgeous antique jewelled neckline. Her jewelry was by Lorraine Schwartz and her hair was full, with loose curls that we quite liked.

With all the Bow Controversy at this year's Oscars, we have to wonder: will every high school girl be turning up to her prom with a giant bow on her somewhere? Really, the bow is not for the faint of heart or for those who are unwilling to take a bold fashion stance. It also helps if your be-bowed gown is made by either a)Valentino Couture or b) Balenciaga couture. Otherwise, you are in uncharted bow territory.

2007 Oscar Fashions That Worked, Part 2

Photo of Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Reese Witherspoon at 2007 Oscars We absolutely adored Cate Blanchett's Giorgio Armani Privé one shoulder, silver mesh gown which featured Swarovski crystals, a tulle overlay and a jet black paillette floral motif. Her jewelry was from Lorraine Schwartz. Cate went along with the hair in a casual bun trend, which really worked for her. The simple hairstyle offset the elaborate detail on the gown. She looked amazing.

Frankly, we were shocked at how fabulous Reese Witherspoon looked. The woman is going through a divorce and yet somehow she managed to look the best she's looked in years. The long, straight blond hair was very flattering to her face, and the strapless, tiered Nina Ricci gown really showed off her curves. We recall her saying in interviews how she never thought she could be an actress because she's not sexy enough. Well, that is not going to be a problem: she looked very sexy -- and yet elegant. Which is not easy to pull off. The 38 carat Van Cleef and Arpels diamond bracelet didn't hurt, either.

Anne Hathaway looked stunning in a white Valentino gown with lace overlay, accented by two black bows and a fishtail hem. She got a lot of grief for the big bow in front, but when she turned sideways, Valentino's vision became clear. From the back or the side, the dress is an absolute stunner -- and the bow in the front helps offset the draping in the back. For fun, we photoshopped out the bow in the front, and what do you know? The dress just dies. It's also very Devil Wears Prada, and since she and Emily Blunt presented the award for Best Costume Design, it worked. She had quite a few diamond Van Cleef and Arpels bracelets on, but overall we think it worked. Kudos to Anne for taking a chance here and making it happen. Her hair and makeup were elegant and pretty, as usual. So please stop writing us about Anne's bow: we are pro-bow. At least in this one instance, anyway.

Jennifer Hudson's Oscar Regret

Photo of Jennifer Hudson One of the more puzzling ensembles seen at the Oscars was the Oscar de la Renta brown gown with a hideous gold python shrug worn by Best Supporting Actress winner Jennifer Hudson. The color was not flattering and the shrug simply looked ridiculous. On the E! pre-show, viewers saw Vogue's Andre Leon Talley escorting Hudson to the atelier of Oscar de la Renta so he could design a dress for her. The sketches of the dress looked pretty cool, actually, but a designer of de la Renta's skill should have known that it wouldn't translate in real life to a curvy woman. You need to be six feet tall, weigh 120 lbs and have Big Attitude as you strut down a fashion runway to wear something like that. And even then, you run the risk of looking like a space alien.

Well, according to The New York Post, Hudson hated the dress but was forced into wearing it by a tyrannical Talley.
....Jennifer Hudson, did win big - but lost big, too, because of the much ridiculed metallic bolero Andre Leon Talley made her put on. (Post fashion editor Serena French said it made her look "lost in space.") "Jennifer was kind of sponsored by Talley and Vogue," said one fashionista. "Andre insisted she wear that hideous Oscar de la Renta dress with the awful, awful gold python bolero.

"Jennifer really didn't want to, and so [noted stylist] Jessica Paster got her a beautiful gold Roberto Cavalli custom-made. But when Andre found out, he went ballistic. Moments before she left for the show, there was a power struggle and Jennifer ended up putting his outfit on."
Jennifer removed the bolero before she took the stage to accept her Oscar, which was a wise choice. That way, her dress just looked dull, not crazy. Later she did change into the gold Cavalli dress for the Governor's Ball and she looked fabulous. We're not sure why Andre made such a fashion misstep: he did a much better job of picking all the clothes for Melania Trump's over the top wedding to the Donald. Maybe Melania just refused to wear any boleros or any brown evening gowns.

2007 Oscar Fashions That Worked, Part 1

Photo of Rachel Weisz, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Penelope Cruz at 2007 Oscars

Everyone was very well-behaved on the red carpet last night. No swan dresses (alas!), no Bob Mackie/Cher/showgirl ensembles and no one designed her own dress after the great Kim Basinger Dress Debacle from years ago. The stylists, hairdressers and makeup artists were out in full force and everyone -- with a few notable exceptions -- looked lovely. We were sort of hoping that someone would throw caution to the wind -- sartorially speaking -- but no one did. Instead, most of the celebs looked the best they've looked all year.

Rachel Weisz, who won an Oscar last year for Best Supporting Actress, looked stunning in a platinum satin Vera Wang gown with a train and jeweled neckline. She wore a diamond vintage Cartier pendant.

New mom Maggie Gyllenhaal looked fabulous in a crystal-embroidered navy and black Proenza Schouler one-shoulder gown with a feather-trimmed hem. Her hair was a soft updo, with some face-framing tendrils. Her pale skin was accented with a deep burgundy lipstick and smoky eyes.

Penelope Cruz took the prize for best gown of the night with her blush Atelier Versace gown, which featured detailed ruching on the bodice, a sweeping ruffled fishtail train and Chopard diamonds. Her bag was laden with Swarovski crystals. Bucking the "messy bun with tendrils around the face" trend of the night, Penelope opted for a more formal updo which worked perfectly with the gown. Penelope opted for pale pink lipstick and smoky eyes, which worked perfectly with her olive skintone.

Most actresses either wore their hair in a messy, unstructured bun or elected for long, blond hair extensions. Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon all were working the long, blond straight hair thing: they all looked amazing. Nicole and Gwyneth spent the night making sure their hair fell over one shoulder only, so as to better show off the back of their gowns. Kudos to their hairdressers -- that's not an easy look to achieve, especially if your hair is naturally curly.

Oscar Fashions Stay Conservative, Elegant

No swan dresses, no Bob Mackie showgirl costumes, no self-designed frocks were to be found at last night's Oscars. With the proliferation of online media ready to rip apart a starlet's sartorial choices in excruciating detail, no actress who values her career dares to step outside the house without being vetted by a virtual army of stylists, makeup artists and publicists. This has led to major increase in the number of actresses who look quite pulled-together on the Red Carpet, but -- alas -- has also caused the event to lose some of its best fun: looking for the actress who'll be this year's equivalent of Bjork in a giant swan outfit with matching egg-shaped purse.

Here are some women who got it really, really right last night. On the far left is Jessica Alba looking enchanting in a gold column dress with halter top, sweeping train and elaborate embroidery by Versace. Jessica told Isaac Mizrahi (who didn't grope her even once) that she was wearing Christian Dior lip gloss, that they have the best lip glosses.

Nicole Kidman looks stunning in a Balenciaga strapless ivory sheath dress which features ivory embroidery. Her rose-cut diamond earrings are by Fred Leighton.

New mommy Jennifer Garner really looked fabulous in this low-cut, empire-style dress with Swarovski crystals and sterling silver flowers, by Michael Kors. The dress also has quite a train on it and when Jennifer went out to present the award for Best Costume, she tripped on the hem and nearly avoided a nasty fall. Ever the trooper, the Alias star quipped "Thank you. I do all my own stunts." Did you hear that they're going to cut around eight of the final Alias episodes when the second half of season five starts airing in April? That makes us so mad!

But back to Jessica Alba, who noted in an interview that she was a bit nervous about presenting at the Oscars: it's true that Into the Blue wasn't exactly Oscar material. But remember, Best Supporting Actress winner Rachel Weisz got her start in The Mummy and The Mummy 2, as the announcer reminded a billion people as she made her way to pick up her statuette. So, hold your head high, Jessica and look for that script that requires you to 1) cry 2) get really angry and, most importantly, 3) look like hell. Then you, too, could have your Oscar-winnning moment.
