Cristiano Ronaldo and Nike Unveil Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II
Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo helped Nike unveiled its Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II at an event in London. The Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II is a lightweight boot that Nike says features a "new, unique adaptive traction system designed for explosive acceleration." In a statement, Nike said the shoe provides increased speed and allows for quick changes of direction.
In developing Nike Sense adaptive traction technology, designers created an adaptive stud that can extend and retract by up to 3mm, based on ground conditions and pressure exerted by the player. Directionally positioned blades maximize cutting and allow for quick changes of direction, while secondary toe traction provides added toe-off power for those first critical steps. The result is a boot that enables greater speed in all directions.
Cristiano Ronaldo says, "For me, it's all about first-step acceleration, but twisting and turning around a defender is also important. The Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II helps me do both, so I can beat my opponent and create scoring opportunities."

Nike Sticking With Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods has already lost Accenture as a sponsor, Gillette is taking a break and AT&T and Tag Heuer are evaluating how they will proceed. Meanwhile, Nike is sticking behind Tiger Woods despite his infidelity and countless affairs. The Guardian reports that Nike chairman Phil Knight thinks Tiger's indiscretions will be nothing more than a "minor blip" when Tiger Woods' career is over.
Phil Knight, the chairman and co-founder of the sportswear company, has given his unequivocal backing to Woods at a time when other sponsors are distancing themselves from the world's top golfer. Knight said: "When his career is over, you'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip." Speaking to the Sports Business Journal, Knight brushed off the scandal engulfing Woods as "part of the game" of sponsorship deals.
Woods has announced he is taking an "indefinite" break from golf after admitting infidelity. The admission prompted the financial services company Accenture to sever links with Woods. Proctor & Gamble and Gillette have said they would limit the use of Woods in its marketing
It sounds like Nike is very confident Tiger Woods will be making a comeback in the future.

Nike Says Tiger Woods Has its Full Support
Nike is giving Tiger Woods its full support after the car accident at his house over Thanksgiving weekend. Nike has been a sponsor of Tiger's for many years. People reports:
"Tiger and his family have Nike's full support," the company said in a statement Monday. "We respect Tiger's request for privacy and our thoughts are with Tiger and his family at this time."
Woods, 33, has backed out of his last golf tournament of the year, the Chevron World Challenge in California, citing unspecified injuries from the accident.
Nike is reportedly paying Tiger $40 million to endorse its shoes and other products, so the company's support is a major victory for Tiger in the wake of all the bad press he's been receiving the past few days. So far, none of his other sponsors have stepped up to make a statement.

Michael Vick's Agent Reported False Nike Endorsement Deal
Michael Vick's agent reported earlier this week that Vick had landed an endorsement deal with Nike. USA Today's The Huddle blog reports that Nike then reported that the news was false - there was no endorsement deal.
If the agent's objective was to rehabilitate Vick's image, the attempt backfired, says marketing consultant Ernest Lupianacci, a former creative director for Nike advertising.
"This agent put his Air Vick in his mouth," Lupinacci says.
Vick's personal agent, Joel Segal, told SportsBusiness Journal on Wednesday that the quarterback was "excited to be part of the Nike team again."
Darren Rovell, CNBC's sports business reporter, first reported the news. Rovell Tweeted: "Nike spokesman says Swoosh doesn't have contract with Vick. Just giving him free product. I Knew this was all bogus."
Nike also issued the following statement:
"Nike does not have a contractual relationship with Michael Vick. We have agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike."
Nike dropped Michael Vick in 2007 after he was indicted on dogfighting charges. The Huddle says Nike was the last sponsor to drop Vick. Nike was giving him Nike products to wear but not an endorsement deal at this point in time. Vick's lucky to have that and a job right now given the public's poor perception of him. His agent is going to have to be far more patient.

Swoosh Recovery: Nike CEO Compares Economic Recovery to Nike Logo
Nike recently reported a 2% drop in U.S. sales for the quarter ending May 31st. Nike's fiscal fourth-quarter profit fell 30%. Reuters reports that Nike CEO Mark Parker is talking about a "swoosh recovery" - comparing the possible upcoming economic recovery with Nike's swoosh logo.
But Chief Executive Mark Parker did talk of a "swoosh recovery," equating gradual improvement in the world economy with the upward curve of the company's logo.
"We're certainly on that longer road up to recovery," Parker said on a conference call. "But it will take awhile, let's be real."
If the stock market recovery follows Nike's swoosh logo it will be a long slow climb that eventually puts the stock market back to its 2008 peak several years from now. This type of recovery is probably more likely than the quick V-shaped recoveries we have seen in recent years.

Eddie Van Halen Sues Nike Over Sneaker Design
WWD reports that Eddie Van Halen's company ELVH Inc has sued Nike for copyright infringement of the "red-white-and-black-striped pattern" on Van Halen's Frankenstat guitar. ELVH argues that some of Nike's Dunk Low shoes infringe on the pattern. ELVH also released a line of men's sneakers based on the Frankenstat pattern earlier this year.
Citing "irreparable harm and damage," ELVH is asking for the impoundment and destruction of all the shoes in question, as well as all profits from the sale of the shoes and damages.
As previously reported by Footwear News, Van Halen released a line of men's high-and low-top sneakers featuring the Frankenstein design earlier this spring though licensee New Jersey-based FEA Merchandising, a company specializing in recording-artist merchandise.
Nike said that they believe the lawsuit to be without merit and they "infringed on any rights held by Mr. Van Halen."
