Nicole Richie is launching a contemporary clothing line which will debut next spring. The contemporary line, called Winter Kate, will be casual with a bohemian flair. WWD reports:
The 37-piece Winter Kate line, which takes her daughter Harlow's two middle names, will hit stores such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ron Herman, Intermix and Kitson, beginning in February.
"It feels as though I've always been working on this collection, but officially I started putting it together in early 2009," said Richie, who is lying low at home after the birth last month of her son, Sparrow. "I've wanted to design a clothing collection for a very long time."
Richie, who has become known for her eclectic bohemian style with a Sixties and Seventies flair, said she has torn fashion pages out of magazines for years and also draws inspiration from her favorite animals, including peacocks and other birds.
The line includes mostly tops, vests and bed jackets in colorful vintage-inspired silk, crepe and chiffon because these tops are a mainstay of Richie’s own wardrobe.
"I probably wear the same two pairs of jeans every day as the background to a fabulous top," she said. "Bed jackets are a staple of my wardrobe because they are a gorgeous way to give jeans and a white T-shirt a completely different look."
Also key for spring dressing are "definitely a beautiful, fun slip dress in a great print and also a leather jacket to turn the romantic day dress into an edgy night-out outfit," Richie said.
Nicole loves slip dresses and said she made the dresses in both solids and prints. She likes to use the dresses as a base piece and layer pieces on top. There are also maxidresses, which have made a comeback since Angelina Jolie started wearing them several years ago.
Nicole says the ideal customer is a woman like her: She does not look at labels; she knows how to mix and match. The pieces can be dressed up, made casual, but most importantly, they provide the wearer a means of self-expression and fun."
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have introduced their six-week old son Sparrow on the cover of People. The entire family - Nicole, Joel Madden, Harlow and Sparrow - posed for an inside the magazine shot.
Nicole told People, "I couldn't be happier. The only thing you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy, and they are. I'm right where I belong. I'm glad I had a girl before I had a boy. She just loves him so much."

Here's the new Funny or Die video entitled "Zac Efron's Pool Party." Zac and Vanessa Hudgens are hosting a pool party with their celebrity friends when Zac's horrible uncle and his trashy girlfriend show up to ruin things. Justin Long drinks his Corona underwater, Lance Bass confides that he's managed not to Google himself for an entire week, Brody Jenner wonders whether Nobel laureate Paul Krugman is really a Keynsian-style economist, and Nicole Richie and Joe Madden are about to get engaged. But Uncle Hank (Thomas Lennon) and his pregnant girlfriend (Nicole Sullivan) put a real damper on this upscale, intellectual party. It's pretty funny. Take a look:
Nicole Richie is expanding
her House of Harlow 1960 empire. She just inked a licensing deal with Rick and Brian Cytrynbaum. The deal is for a multi-product line which will include twenty different styles of shoes, plus handbags, sunglasses, belts and some clothing.
According to Rick Cytrynbaum, Richie has had complete creative control from day one. "Nicole is designing everything herself. She's totally devoted to this, and we're creating a whole lifestyle around her aesthetic and what is true to her," he told FN. Richie will be on hand at FFANY in New York for the line's debut and will also be making in-store appearances for the line when it hits stores. While price points are still to be determined, Cytrynbaum said the items will hit contemporary price points and will be available at select department stores and independents that he has worked closely with in the past.
"Retailers that have been good to Modern Vintage will be getting first dibs," he joked. "We're being very selective. We're only inviting a handful of our best accounts with our other brands to view the line. We don't want to be everything to everybody [with this brand]." Though he declined to disclose sales projections, Cytrynbaum was bullish on the line's potential, based, he said, on Richie's status in the fashion industry. "Nicole Richie is by far one of America's biggest fashion icons right now. We're investing millions into this brand. This is like nothing out there right now."
Looking ahead, Cytrynbaum said the brand would always be open to expansion opportunities into other categories.
The new line will debut in spring of 2010. Manufacturers Rick and Brian Cytrynbaum have a good track record: they own Earnest Sewn jeans and Modern Vintage shoes. Nicole's costume jewelry line has been quite a success. The custom-made headband she's wearing in the photo is available for $430 at
Kitson.com, along with the rest of her jewelry line.
Starburst Necklace is Nicole Richie’s Favorite Piece From Her Collection
Nicole Ritchie has a fast-selling jewelry line. People says Nicole's House of Harlow jewelry line sold out at Kitson on pre-order before people could buy it in stores. Nicole Richie just recently announced the line which coincided with the launch of a new website.
"This has been a dream of mine for so long." Nicole donned over 20 pieces of the line (which she co-designed with jeweler Pascal Mouawad) at the event, in keeping with her accessory philosophy that more is more. "I stack everything," she says. "I layer my jewelry." She admits her zeal may be related to eschewing jewelry around daughter Harlow, 1. "Everything just goes in her mouth," Richie laughs. "In the daytime, heels and jewels are out!"
Nicole says her favorite piece is the starburst necklace pictured on the right. It retails for $75.
"In the back, there's a little star. I thought it was a nice touch to have that instead of the typical clasp, and I wanted to give people the option to have a bigger piece and a smaller piece in the necklace." So, what's next? "I'm focusing on my brand right now."
The House of Harlow jewelry can be found here on Kitson's website. Nicole's jewelry line was co-designed by jewelry Pascal Mouawad. Nicole also told People that she's working on a maternity line.

Nicole Richie is guest starring on NBC's Chuck tonight. Nicole plays Sarah's old high school nemesis Heather Chandler. We think Chuck is hilarious and we love how they have a mock store based on Best Buy called Buy More. By the way the fictional Buy More store even has its own website.
