Narciso Rodriguez created a very sleek, wearable collection for fall 2010. His signature architectural lines were in evidence, as was color blocking. There was a lot of black -- which fashion editors despise, but other women love -- with accents of crimson and emerald green. Narciso knows how to design clothes that women want to wear and buy. That's whats in for fall 2010. Take a look:
Jason Wu's 2010 fall ready to wear collection was inspired by photographer Irving Penn. Penn's photographs provided the inspiration for the gold-touched pieces, and the photographs of Penn by Alexander Liberman were the inspiration for his menswear pieces. There were some cocktail dresses that weren't really up to snuff -- the exaggerated balloon dress, for example -- but there were plenty of pretty dresses all the same. The menswear pieces were a bit boxy, but wearable. Take a look:
Naeem Khan created a truly gorgeous collection for his fall 2010 ready to wear show at Bryant Bark. There were showstopping cocktail dresses and evening gowns, and separates for a dressier day look.
Indian embroidery is the star here with metallic beading, mirrored embellishments, sequins and crystals. The color palette was black, gold, silver and cream, with touches of crimson, which worked especially well in a fitted red jacket. He also includes some fabulous evening pants, for those who are tired of gowns. Several looked were paired with black leather and boots, to give a rocker edge to all the luxury. The designer said the collection's theme was "sex, love, and rock and roll." Naeem's wife Ranjana Khan created the jewelry that was shown with the collection. Take a look:
Oscar de la Renta broke with the prevailing trend of muted tones for fall and instead showed a stunning collection of jewel-toned suits, dresses and evening gowns. Oscar said that the collection was inspired by Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Luxurious fabrics such as cashmere, alpaca and embroidered silks were worked into stunning day suits and chic cocktail gowns. His evening gowns and ballgowns were perfectly cut, displaying his usual elegant style. The suits showed a very slim silhouette and the length was either just above or below the knee.
The show was styled with some glamour: the tights worn with the suits had crystals on them, the hair was done in pretty, soft waves. The eyes were smoky and the lips were glossy. It's Oscar. It's fabulous. Take a look:
Michael Kors said that his fall 2010 ready to wear collection was "quintessential American sportswear." What that translates to: wearable, classic separates for fall in camel, grey and black. Kors does pants in a number of different incarnations: we especially loved the slouchy, low-waisted ones. The knits and oversized anorack are must buys.
The only jarring note in the collection was the appearance of leg warmers. He sneaked them in by using a grey, tasteful knit, but they were there. Yes, leg warmers were back -- and not only at Michael Kors. They were all over the place. On the other hand, if you get cold legs, this fall is going to make you very happy. Take a look:
Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte said they took their inspiration for the fall 2010 ready to wear collection from Mexican border towns. They said the towns had a feel of sleepwalking from living in limbo between two countries. They used quite a bit of Mexican crochet and lace, and embraced floral prints. The goal was a look that was "poetic and ethereal."
The collection was mostly in neutral colors. Cream and beige dominated, with splashes of dusty rose, violet and red. The dresses were patchwork in nature, with bits of lace, crochet and lots of floaty floral chiffon. The sweaters were chunky and embellished. It's definitely a departure for the design duo, which has usually showed a darker edge in designing and has embraced a strong, warrior woman vibe. There were lots and lots of layers: chunky sweaters will be a hot item for fall, as well as embellished leggings.
Most of the designers have been taking note of the awful economy and have been sending very wearable pieces down the runway. Marc Jacobs embraced the trend with his beautiful, very saleable collection. But who exactly is going to wear all these bohemian layers? They can't go to the office. They are out of the price range of most twenty-somethings. Women of a certain age don't wear patchwork, floaty chiffon dresses layered with chunky knits and lace -- unless they are really into the whole boho thing. It will be interesting to see which direction the Mulleavy sisters go next. Take a look:
Mark Badgley and James Mischka decided to be hyper efficient during New York Fashion Week. For the first act of the show, the talented duo showed their trademark fabulous red carpt-worthy gowns. Then for the second half of the show, they presented 29 looks from their lower priced contemporary line called
Mark & James.
The first segment started off with some elegant matte jersey column gowns, in teal and black. The more formal gowns were fabulously embellished with dense rows of crystals. Other gowns were covered in chiffon rosettes. The color palette base was black, red, teal and blush. The contemporary line featured lots of black and grey, with leggings being key. Take a look:

Marc Jacobs showed a truly lovely collection at New York fashion week. His Fall 2010 ready to wear collection featured a pale palette of subdued colors. Marc says his inspiration was from many sources, including past collections, as well as decades from the 1920s to the 1970s -- but no 1980s. "Pretty" "gentle" and "stylish" is what he was going for and what he delivered. From flowing, elegant pantsuits to a hot black sequin cocktail number, this collection is very pretty indeed. The pieces are also quite flattering and are sure to sell quite well. Take a look:
Prabal Gurung got rave reviews for his first collection last year. He shows he's not a one trick pony with his ready to wear fall 2010 collection. The separates reflected clean lines and a keen eye for editing. He showed lots of color blocking, with a palette of black, white, beige and red as as base. The shoulders were broad and rounded. He got a little carried away with the ruffles and draping, but with a bit of editing this is a very wearable, modern collection. The separates and the tailored dresses are going to fly out of stores.
