Sony Music has cut a $250 million deal with the Michael Jackson Estate. The deal involves 10 albums over a seven year period that will include both original Michael Jackson songs and repackaged old ones. The Wall Street Journalarticle says some parts of Michael Jackson's business are excluded from the deal, such as the licensing of the singer's likeness.
The advances being paid by Sony are to be offset by sales of albums as well as revenue generated by licensing Mr. Jackson's music for uses like videogames, movies and theatrical performances. But unlike the megadeals struck in recent years by concert promoter Live Nation Entertainment Inc. with pop stars Jay-Z and Madonna, the Jackson deal doesn't give Sony income from other parts of the late singer's business, such as merchandise sales or fees for licensing his name and likeness.
Reuters reports that one of the new Michael Jackson albums is expected to be released before the end of this year.
Twilight star Robert Pattinson is reportedly planning to release an album as early as the end of this year. Pattinson is quoted as saying, "I want to do one at the end of the year. All my friends are recording albums and I'm very annoyed about it."
It sounds like he is bothered that his friends have albums and he doesn't. You can listen to some of Robert Pattinson's singing here, here and here. One of the videos has nearly 7 million views. Take a look:
