Microsoft Hopes Zune HD Will be a Holiday Hit
Microsoft's Zune HD player has received good reviews. The music player also started out with strong sales according to Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division.
As for Zune HD, Microsoft "is struggling to keep up with demand," Bach said. "We're working hard on it for the holidays." Added communications director Jose Pinera, sales "exceeded our expectations" and sold out "in many outlets" after its Sept. 15 launch.
Bach also predicts a good holiday for Microsoft. He thinks "technology gifts will be very popular" despite the ongoing recession.
Features of the Zune HD include a touchscreen, HD radio, HD video out, web browser and wi-fi. It also has the Zune Originals design store which lets you customize your Zune HD. The Zune HD looks much nicer than the previous Zune. It comes in 16GB ($220) and 32GB ($290) units.
PC World says the Zune HD is no iPod Killer. Even if a far superior device it would be hard for Microsoft to overtake Apple's popular music player. You can read more Zune HD reviews here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.

Zune HD Will Cost Less Than iPod Touch
Microsoft's attractive new Zune HD music player will be priced less than the iPod reports Wired's Gadget Lab. The 32 GB version for the Zune HD will be $290, which is considerably less than the $370 price for a 32GB iPod Touch. Wired says Microsoft's pricing move could give Zune a shot at gaining some marketshare in the portable music device segment.
Microsoft’s move will give Zune a real shot at catching up to its competitor. Since its launch in 2006, Zune has been struggling to make a dent in the iPod’s massive market share. According to research firm NPD, in the first half of the year Zune’s market share was about 2 percent compared to about 70 percent for the iPod.
But, clearly, Microsoft hasn’t given up on this battle. In May, the company announced a new version of the Zune media player called Zune HD. Zune HD has a 3.3-inch capacitive OLED screen with multi-touch functionality, Wi-Fi, HD radio and an Internet browser. The device will also have HD video output capability.
You can read about some of the many features on the Zune HD - which include touchscreen, HD Radio, web browser and downloads from Xbox Live - here on Amazon.com. Microsoft's Zune HD website can be found here.

Microsoft's Zune HD Coming Out This Fall
Microsoft will be releasing the Zune HD this fall. The Zune HD portable media player combines a built-in HD Radio receiver, OLED multitouch screen, Internet browser, Wi-Fi and access to Zune Marketplace online store. CNET says Microsoft created Zune HD to go head-to-head with the iPod Touch.
The software maker did not announce pricing or capacity, though it said the device will use flash memory and attempt to take on Apple's high-end iPod models.
"This device is created to go head to head with the iPod Touch," Chris Stephenson, general manager of global marketing for Microsoft Zune, said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. Zune buyers will also be able to play HD content on their TVs via a dock, Microsoft said.
The software maker also said that at next week's E3 trade show in Los Angeles it will announce details on a new Zune-branded video service for the Xbox that will replace the current Xbox Live marketplace for TV and movies. The company didn't announce details or specifically say that content will be playable on both Zunes and the Xbox.
Microsoft has not revealed the cost or the capacity of the new Zunes. Gizmodo has more details on Zune HD here.

Trouble For Microsoft's Zune
Some data contained in Microsoft's recent SEC filing reveals that sales of its Zune MP3 players fell in the final quarter of 2008. The news has some tech websites posted articles titled Zune Death Watch. The Wall Street Journal's Digits blog says Microsoft's 2008 Zune holiday revenues were $100 million less than its Zune holiday sales in 2007.
In the filing, Microsoft mentions a steep drop in Zune revenues in the holiday quarter compared to the same period the prior year. "Zune platform revenue decreased $100 million or 54% reflecting a decrease in device sales," notes the filing.
Those figures imply Zune revenue during the holiday 2007 quarter was around $185 million and that it fell to $85 million over the most recent holiday period.
Digits also writes that unless Microsoft jazzes up the Zune the gadget is probably "headed from low to no market share." That's probably true. The widely reported Y2K9 error that plagued some Zune owners around New Year's won't help Microsoft with its Zune sales woes. The Zune website is still active with forward promotions like a Valentine's Day Zune design so there's no sign the company is ready to ditch its portable music player.

Barack Obama Spotted Using a Zune
Apple fanboys have been shocked by the news that President-elect Barack Obama owns a Zune. They believed him to be a die-hard Mac user which he cannot be if he owns a Zune. The Microsoft Zune is not compatible with Macs. Maybe the President-Elect just wants to be different?
The news was first reported here in the Philadelphia City Paper. Gizmodo writer Matt Buchanan was shocked and disturbed by the report.
After all of the misinformation and dirty lies spread about Obama over the course of the presidential campaign, this is the most shocking I've heard about him: He uses a Zune. This can't be possible.
Why? Because, as has been widely reported, Obama, many of his staffers and Joe Biden use a Mac. And well, Zunes don't work on Macs and ... my mind is blown.
Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan also said, "Is the world even real? Hold me." It's not the end of the world if Obama uses a Zune. The City Paper is now referring to the incident as ZuneGate and says they aren't 100% positive it was Obama's Zune.
I want to correct what I said yesterday about Obama using a Zune. I claimed that it was his Zune. I don't know for sure that it was his. It could belong to one of the many Secret Service dudes that were at the gym, Michelle, or even one of his daughters. His headphones were not the standard iPod headphones, rather ones that wrap around your ear like the image to the right. The headphones were gray colored, either because they were gray or because they were really worn from use.
The WSJ's Business Technology blog says Obama might own both an iPod and a Zune. A few more stories on the Obama Zune situation can be found here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
Microsoft is probably ecstatic and hoping the news that Obama uses a Zune could inspire a new generation of Zune fanboys. A spokesperson for Microsoft has already jumped on ZuneGate and what is clearly terrific news for the music player saying, "Clearly the president elect has great taste."

Zune Adds Buy from FM; Cuts McDonald's Wi-Fi Deal
The Microsoft Zune portable media player will soon give users the ability to buy music directly from the FM radio built into each device. Zune users can tag and buy the songs they want and then later download them with a wireless Internet connection. This new feature goes in to effect with the Zune 3.0 software. InformationWeek reports that Microsoft will also soon be adding 16GB ($199.99) and 120GB ($249.99) Zune versions.
Microsoft has also cut a major deal with McDonald's that will allow Zune owners free Wi-Fi at thousands of McDonald's restaurants. News.com says the McDonald's deal is significant because it adds nearly 10,000 locations where people can access the Zune Marketplace store.
The McDonald's deal is important because although every Zune has built-in Wi-Fi, the devices can only access free Wi-Fi hot spots that don't have a browser interrupt. That severely limits the types of public locations from which people can download songs wirelessly.
Many of the Zune's key new features, such as channels and "buy from FM" are most useful when Zune owners have access to a compatible Wi-Fi location. The McDonald's deal, struck with its Wi-Fi provider Wayport, adds nearly 10,000 places where people can access the Zune Marketplace store.
The Zune-McDonald's Wi-Fi deal is possible because of a three-year Microsoft deal with Wayport, Inc. - a Wi-Fi broadband internet access provider - as Wi-Fi Net News explains here.
