Mattel is Launching Foldable Hot Wheels Cars

Mattel Foldable Hot Wheels

CNN reports that Mattel plans to introduce flat, foldable Hot Wheels cars called Stealth Rides at the upcoming Toy Fair in New York City. The credit card sized toy cars will pop up and become remote control vehicles when a button is pressed.
All five Stealth Rides fold flat and slide out of a plastic case that functions as both a carrying case and a remote control. With the push of a button, the "flat" cars transform into three-dimensional, fully functioning remote-control vehicles.

"Containing a fully functioning vehicle in a pocket-sized case will allow kids to play anywhere, anytime," said Geoff Walker, senior vice president with Mattel Brands. "The vehicles [provide] a unique and cool level of play experience that was not previously possible."
CNN says the The Hot Wheels Stealth Rides will arrive in stores in in August, 2010 and will cost about $25 each.

Mattel Gets a Boost From Barbie

BarbieThe Wall Street Journal reports that Barbie helped boost Mattel's fourth quarter profits by 86%. Barbie sales jumped 12% in 2009 compared to the year before. However, Mattel's overall sales only increased by 1% because the toy manufacturer did not do as well in other categories.
The largest U.S. toy maker reported a profit of $328.4 million, or 89 cents a share, up from $176.4 million, or 49 cents, a year earlier. The periods included tax benefits of 8 cents a share and 13 cents, respectively.

Despite a 12% increase in Barbie sales, its overall sales were lackluster, with revenue climbing 1% to $1.96 billion. Sales fell 2% in the U.S., where Mr. Eckert said Mattel lost "a little bit" of market share, mostly as a result of fewer toys tied to entertainment than last year.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had most recently forecast earnings of 68 cents a share on $1.98 billion in revenue for the El Segundo, Calif., company.
It isn't a surprise Barbie sales were up in 2009. Barbie was celebrating her 50th anniversary and there were numerous activites, events and product launches. A few of the Barbie events include a fashion show, life-size Barbie Malibu Dream House and designer Barbie dolls.

Mattel Loses Sesame Street Rights to Hasbro

Hasbro, Inc. has won a ten year contract to manufacture and market the toys for all the Sesame Street characters. The contract for the last ten years was held by Mattel, Inc.
The new products from Hasbro's Playskool division will be based on Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster and other mainstays of the television program, according to a statement today. The line of toys and games by Pawtucket, Rhode Island-based Hasbro will be available in stores starting 2011.

Fisher Price, a subsidiary of Mattel Inc., the world's biggest toymaker, owned the rights for the last 10 years, said Sherrie Westin, chief marketing officer of Sesame Workshop. The switch was made because Hasbro has the right strategy to develop a year-round business, Westin said. More Sesame Street toys will be sold throughout the year going forward, she said.

"Our approach to the consumer is to deliver products throughout the year, not just in the fourth quarter," John Frascotti, chief marketing officer of Hasbro, said.
Ouch! Hasbro just couldn't resist slapping Mattel when it's down. Mattel could not be reached for comment about losing the huge Sesame Street deal.

Mattel Launches Barbie Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken Doll

Barbie Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken Doll

We aren't sure what to think of this unusual Ken doll from Mattel. Sugar Daddy Ken is described as wearing a "dashing jacquard-patterned jacket with a light pink polo shirt and crisp white pants." The product description says Ken "is ready for Palm Beach social season, sunning by the pool and a stroll with his little companion." Little is too large of a word to describe that super tiny dog that is not much higher than Ken's shoes. Sugar Daddy Ken also comes with "swim trunks" so Ken can remove his crisp white pants and hang out by the pool. Sugar Daddy Ken will not be available until April 2010. It is sold for $81.99 from Entertainment Earth.

Mattel Settles Lawsuit Over Lead-Contaminated Toys

Mattel, Inc. settled a consolidated lawsuit brought by consumers who sued over recalled toys that contained lead.
The settlement provides "tens of millions of dollars in monetary relief," plaintiff law firm Whatley Drake & Kallas LLC said in a statement. Consumers who participated in the recall will get either a check for 50 percent of the total vouchers they sent in or $10, whichever is greater, according to the law firm.

Mattel recalled more than 21 million toys made in China, including Elmo Stacking Rings and Bedtime Dora, after they were found in 2007 to have lead paint or dangerous designs. After the recalls by Mattel and other companies in 2007, Congress overhauled consumer regulations, effectively banning lead in toys.
Mattel, Inc. is the world's largest toymaker. The settlement was filed in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles yesterday.

Mattel, Fisher-Price to Pay $2.3 Million For Violating Lead Paint Ban

Mattel 2007 Toy RecallThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Mattel Inc. and its subsidiary, Fisher-Price Inc. have agreed to pay a $2.3 million civil penalty for violating the federal lead paint ban. The CPSC says that in 2007, about 95 Mattel and Fisher-Price toy models were determined to have exceeded the lead limit in toys. This civil penalty is the third highest of any kind in CPSC history and the highest ever for CPSC regulated product violations.

"These highly publicized toy recalls helped spur Congressional action last year to strengthen CPSC and make even stricter the ban on lead paint on toys," said CPSC Acting Chairman Thomas Moore. "This penalty should serve notice to toy makers that CPSC is committed to the safety of children, to reducing their exposure to lead, and to the implementation of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act."

Mattel imported up to 900,000 non-compliant toys between September 2006 and August 2007, including a "Sarge" toy car and numerous Barbie accessory toys. Fisher-Price imported up to 1.1 million non-compliant toys between July 2006 and August 2007, including certain licensed character toys and the Bongo Band, Geotrax locomotive, and Go Diego Go Rescue Boat toys. These toys were all recalled in 2007.

Barbie's 50th Celebration Comes During a Recession

This year is a big one for Barbie. She's celebrates her 50th anniversary and she will have a fashion show at New York Fashion Week. Unfortunately for Mattel the big celebration comes during a recession with consumers scaling back on all kinds of purchases. Mattel's 4th quarter earnings were dismal (Barbie sales fell 21%) but a Barbie is still sold every three seconds. The AP says Mattel is planing a year-long Barbie celebration this year despite the recession. Take a look:

Elmo and Barbie Couldn't Save Mattel From Weak 4th Quarter

Elmo LiveSales slumped 11% for Mattel in the Q4 of 2008. Mattel also has inventory problems reports Reuters which could be a signing of retailers buying less toys.
But the "really shocking" aspect of Mattel's results was its inventory level, up 13.3 percent from a year ago to $485.9 million, said BMO Capital Markets analyst Gerrick Johnson.

"That means things deteriorated much more quickly than they had planned," Johnson said.

"There is no reason for them to have extra inventory for the first quarter, because they have no entertainment properties this year. It also might mean the first quarter's going to be a lot weaker than we thought because it means they probably brought inventory into the country to distribute for spring, but retailers were like, 'Ah no thanks, keep it.'"
Reuters' Shop Talk blog says Barbie sales also fell 21% for Mattel. Mattel does have toe tie-ins for potential Summer blockbuster films including Transformers 2 and G.I. Joe that could give them a sales boost. Barbie's appearance at New York Fashion Week could also rekindle interest in Barbie products.

Reuters report on Mattel's earnings also says the toy manufacturer raised prices in the "mid-single-digit range" effective Jan. 1 on its spring toy lines. It doesn't seem like the right environment to be raising prices but companies are taking lots of different strategies as they battle this tough economic climate.
