Martha Stewart is moving
to The Hallmark Channel. Martha will move her show to the channel and she will have control over a block of programming. The move gives Martha a specific time for her show nationwide and gives her the chance to produce new shows.
Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., the company Ms. Stewart founded, doesn't make money on "The Martha Stewart Show," but uses it to promote the company's magazines, merchandise and other brands. The show has pulled in lackluster ratings, and Martha Stewart Living has warned it may have to discontinue production of the show in its current form.

Unlike its existing arrangement where TV channels decide when to broadcast "The Martha Stewart Show," Hallmark Channel will air the show at 10 a.m. each day, and rerun it multiple times, giving extra opportunity to sell commercial spots.
Hallmark Channel, owned by Crown Media Holdings Inc., will start airing "The Martha Stewart Show" beginning in September, after the current NBC Universal distribution deal winds down. The companies said Tuesday they also expect to create other shows together, including an extra daily show featuring personalities other than Ms. Stewart, and holiday specials.
Martha Stewart Living expects to make more money from the new arrangement than it does from its current deal with NBC Universal.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc.'s deal with Kmart ends in January. As soon as it does, Home Depot said it will start selling the Martha Stewart cleaning products, home decor and closet organization lines. Sears Holdings Corp.'s Kmart stores began selling the Martha Stewart Everyday home line in 1997, but in October Sears and Martha Stewart did not extend the contract. Martha Stewart Living has reported that 43% of its merchandising revenue in 2008 came from the Kmart line. But the amount had fallen from 2007 as Kmart lowered its royalty payments.
The WSJ says Martha Stewart's paint line will go on sale at Home Depot in March but it doesn't say how much the paint will cost.

The Home Depot deal replaces a long-term deal that Martha Stewart Living had in palce with Kmart. The Kmart contract comes to an end in January 2010. Martha Stewart told CNBC in an interview that she is glad the deal is ending. She says Kmart's new owernship has allowed her line of product to deteriorated and she is no longer happy working with them.
Martha Stewart said, "The new ownership really has really let our line deteriorate. It's been kind of ripped off, I would say, and really diminished and the quality is really not what I am proud of. Have you been into a Kmart lately? It's not the nicest place to shop.
She also said, "The stores are not what they were. The shopping experience is not what it was. The products are not there that people go in for. And it's not a good situation. And as a designer-supplier, I have been extremely disappointed."
Martha Stewart said she thought the Kmart and Sears together could have become almost as big as Wal-Mart if it had been better managed.
