Snooki's Terrifying Beauty Secrets

Now here's a beauty secret you really should not try at home. Jersey Shore's Snooki has a really awful secret: she goes for days at a time without washing her face. In fact for a recent TV appearance the makeup artist revealed she was wearing five days worth of old makeup. MSNBC reports on this breaking skincare tragedy.
"She was bragging that it had been five days since she's washed her face," said one makeup artist who recently prepared her ready for a television appearance. "She said she was too tired to wash her face. I had to scrub to get down to her skin. When I apologized and said it would be worth it because she'd look great, she responded with, 'I always look great anyway.'"

When it was time to move over to the hair department, Snooki had no poof demands. Rather, she wanted to look like another reality star. According to the hairdresser, "Snooki just looked at me and said, 'Kim Kardash me.' She's no Kim Kardashian."
But wait, there's more. The shell shocked makeup artist also shared Snooki's final ritual before going on TV: she leans in to the mirror and says, "I'm hot. Yeah, I'm hot."

We're not really sure where to start with this, but first off the idea of not washing one's face for five days is just horrifying. We can't even imagine what her pores were looking like in hi-def. As for the "Kim Kardash me," that is just hilarious. We've been saying it all day. Well that and "Yeah, I'm hot" every time we walk past a mirror.

Video: Dr. Debra Wattenberg Talks Shelf Life of Cosmetics

Dermatologist Dr. Debra Wattenberg visits The Today Show to talk about the shelf life of cosmetics and how to avoid bacterial and fungal contamination. Dr. Wattenberg says that lip gloss lasts only 2-3 months, especially if it's the kind with a wand. Lipsticks can last up to a year, and mascara has a very short shelf life of three months maximum. Because we're mascara-intensive around here, we've never had a tube last more than a month anyway. Dr. Wattenberg also has some good tips for storage of cosmetics and brush washing. Take a look:

Iran Bans Makeup for Female TV Presenters

The Washington Post reports that Iran is banning all female TV presenters on state television from wearing makeup. Wearing makeup is illegal in Iran, but millions of women wear it anyway. In a bit of optimistic thinking, the government has also banned unruly children and "abnormal" music.
The broadcaster's top manager, Ezzatollah Zarghami, told his managers that female presenters wearing makeup are to be taken off air, saying the wearing of makeup was against the law -- even though millions of women in this country use it. He said there "should be no insulting of family elders by children." "Lowering and refining of music is among our plans," Zarghami also told his managers. His comments were reported in the Ettemaad newspaper. Iran's state television is under heavy criticism from both supporters and opponents of the government, who say its programs are relatively dull and don't appeal to the nation's urban middle class. Viewers are increasingly turning to foreign-based Farsi-language satellite channels, some of them financially backed by the United States and Britain.
Not surprisingly, ratings for Iranian state television are way, way down. In addition to the censored news it broadcasts, the anchors all look terrible because they can't use proper makeup to correct skintones for television cameras. As many American politicians have discovered, one has to wear makeup on TV just to look normal, because of the lighting.

As for declaring that henceforth all children must not be unruly, well, good luck with that.

Japanese Swimmers Hit With Nail Polish Ban

Japan is cracking down on its competitive swimmers. New rules will ban swimmers from competition for life if they dye their hair, have brightly decorated nails or wear earrings. Officials are determined to put a stop to swimmers showing up to competitions dressed like musicians or artists, rather than athletes.
Male and female swimmers caught sneaking into each others rooms at Japanese training camp, where the sexes have separate sleeping quarters, will also find themselves in hot water. "The United States and Australia are also setting these criteria," the Japan Swimming Federation's executive director Masafumi Izumi told local media Wednesday. "We have had many recent controversies (in Japan) with marijuana in sport and at universities, and this is about swimming taking a stand on its own initiative."

The JSF's stringent new plan has been written into its charter following an executive board meeting Tuesday and swimmers will have to sign a letter of oath. Rule-breakers face being booted out of the team and sent home in disgrace, a suspension of up to five years or even a lifetime ban. "It is more an enhancement of the rules," the JSF told Reuters. "It's a policy top swimming countries like Australia and the Americans follow."
Jewelry in the pool is a big no-no, for a lot of reasons, so that makes sense. But gymnasts get to wear makeup, fingernail polish and glitter to perform, even at the Olympics. Most swimmers are so obsessive about shaving seconds off their speed times that they shave their bodies, and most don't wear nail polish anyway. Unless someone comes up with some kind of high tech nail polish that reduces friction in the water, of course.

Topshop to Launch Cosmetics Line

In a surprise move, Topshop announced yesterday that it will begin selling makeup. The British fast fashion chain will launch a cosmetics group with seventeen categories for lips, nails and eyes. Grazia reports:
They'll be 17 core products in the range for eyes, lips and nails with prices starting from 5 [pounds]. Just like the clothing collections, the make up range will be updated regularly four times a year with 'the limited edition capsule collection' taking inspiration from the key trends from the Topshop fashion lines. Similarly to the just-announced Topshop electrical range, we're just going to have to wait to get our hands on the make-up -- it doesn't launch until next year -- but we've heard it'll be worth the wait as the range is going to sophisticated with pro packaging to match.
The line will launch in Sprin 2010 and will be available in Topshop stores on online at Topshop.com.
