Applet Tablet Could be Released Before End of the Year

The Financial Times is reporting today that the much-rumored Apple Tablet is on the way from Apple. It is coming earlier than expected too. The Apple Tablet could be out as early as September.
It will connect to the internet like the iPod Touch - probably without phone capability but with access to the web, and to Apple's online stores for software and entertainment.

Apple is gambling that it can succeed where everyone else has flopped, including Microsoft, which tirelessly pushed a tablet-ready version of its Windows operating system as a personal favourite of founder Bill Gates.

The entertainment industry is hoping that Apple, which revolutionised the markets for music players and for phones, can do it again. "It's a portable entertainment device," said one entertainment executive. "It's going to be fabulous for watching movies."
Apple may be rushing the device to get ahead of Plastic Logic's flat reader that comes out early next year. The Financial Times story quotes an analyst from Oppenheimer & Co analyst Yair Reiner who believes pricing for the flat Apple device would range from $600 and $1,000. Obviously, the Apple Tablet would instantly become the hot gadget for the holidays if it is released before the end of the year.

Apple Tablet Could Be Here in Early 2010

Apple Tablet

The rumors of an Apple Tablet or a large-sized iPod Touch persist. AppleInsider predicts an early 2010 launch of the device. They also says that Steve Jobs deeply involved with the Apple Tablet project.
The 10-inch, 3G-enabled tablet, akin to a jumbo iPod touch, is the latest brainchild of chief executive Steve Jobs. That distinction, as insiders will tell you, carries its share of baggage. Under the critical eye of Jobs, contours must be precise, each pixel of the interface has to match a particular vision, and there can be no fault -- no matter how slight -- or it's back to the drawing board.

As such, AppleInsider has observed silently as the project was reset at least a half-dozen times over the past 24 months. Each time, development was frozen and key aspects of the device rethought, retooled and repositioned. At times, those close to the Apple co-founder had their doubts that it would ever see the light of day, just like a smaller PDA device he canned a few years after returning to the company.

However, the past six months have reportedly seen the critical pieces fall into place. Jobs, who's been overseeing the project from his home, office and hospital beds, has finally achieved that much-sought aura of satisfaction. He's since cemented the device in the company's 2010 roadmap, where it's being positioned for a first quarter launch, according to people well-respected by AppleInsider for their striking accuracy in Apple's internal affairs.
One reason Apple could be rushing is Plastic Logic's thin reader is also expected to be released in 2010. Barnes and Noble has already announced plans to build a large digital bookstore for the Plastic Logic reader. Apple's Tablet and the Plastic Logic reader will be very different but the idea of providing a flat notebook sized device for reading books and articles and surfing the web is similar.

More Apple Tablet Rumors Surface

The rumors that Apple is close to launching an Apple Tablet or a large iPod Touch continue. Gizmodo reports on a new rumor from The China Times that an Apple tablet will be out in time for the holidays and cost $800.
The China Times is now reporting that the endlessly-rumored Apple tablet isn't just coming someday—a fair bet—it's coming soon. It'll land in October, to be exact, when we should expect to pay around $800 for it.

The story of the Apple tablet has been one of hearsay and gossip from the start, and this report, despite coming from a respectable newspaper, is no different.
There's a translation of the China Times article here in Macrumors.com.

An Apple Tablet has been rumored enough now that it won't be a surprise when it finally arrives. People may actually be disappointed if there is no Apple Tablet available soon. However, the $800 rumored price tag may be more than some were expecting to pay for one. A post about some of the earlier Apple tablet rumors can be found here and more discussion of this latest rumor can be found here.

Large iPod Touch is Latest Apple Rumor

Large iPod Touch

TechCrunch is reporting a rumor that Apple plans to launch a larger iPod Touch with a 7 or 9 inch screen in Fall of 2009.
Apple has been experimenting internally with large form tablet devices for years, one source says, but there was concern that users wouldn't like the device. The difference now is the iTunes app store, which has thousands of games and other applications that are perfect for a touch screen device with an accelerometer. Apple says more than 300 million applications have been downloaded since the App Store launched in July 2008. Combine the App Store, iTunes and a browser and you have one heck of a device.
Macrumors says the rumor is consistent with "historically reliable sources that Apple was working on a mini-tablet or PDA-like device about 1.5x the size of the current iPhone."

We would greatly prefer this rumor of a large iPod Touch to the rumored iPhone Nano. An iPod Touch with a decent sized screen could be used at home for watching video and for reading. Even better would be a table-sized iPod Touch that could be use for taking notes and for reading books or online newspaper and magazine articles. (via Techmeme)
