Shape Editor Defends Photoshopping Kelly Clarkson Cover Photo
Self editor Lucy Danziger made an ill-advised appearance on The Today Show today with plus size model Emme to talk about the fury over Self's major retouching of Kelly Clarkson's cover photo. The entire issue is about being happy with yourself as you are, yet the art department shaved off quite a bit of weight from Kelly's frame and made her taller.
Meredith Vieira goes after her for hyprocrisy: the magazine tells women to be happy with themselves, but presents Kelly Clarkson's "personal best" as being impossibly taller than she actually is. Kelly has a quote in the magazine about how she's happy with her weight. But the cover clearly conveys a different message -- that Kelly's delusional and that the only way she's attractive is if she were taller and much, much thinner. That's not cool.
Ms. Danzinger calls the cover a "poster" and says it is "aspirational." This is Self magazine, not Vogue which treats fashion as wearable art. It's an entirely different genre which is supposed to be about empowering women. Well, it's an epic fail on that level. Take a look:
Here is the new music video for Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone." The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn who has worked with Kelly Clarkson some of her earlier videos. Kelly looks very pretty in the gold dress and statement necklace at the opening of the video. It's good to see her adding more glamour to her music videos. It's much better than this outfit. Kelly Clarkson to Hold #1 Spot on Billboard's Album Chart
Billboardreports that Kelly Clarkson should hold the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a second straight week. Clarkson's album, All I Ever Wanted, sold 255,000 the first week and will sell under 100,000 this week but that's still likely to be enough for her to stay at #1.
Clarkson leads the Nielsen SoundScan Building chart that was released on March 18, which reflected unweighted sales through the close of business on Tuesday, March 11. Billboard estimates the seven merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target and Anderson Merchandisers -- comprise about 60% of all U.S. album sales.
Gorilla Zoe's new album "Don't Feed Da Animals" (Block/Bad Boy South/Atlantic) looks like it'll be the chart's highest debut, likely arriving in the top 10. Next in line should be Static-X's "Cult of Static" (Reprise/Warner Bros.), which is aiming for a top 20 debut.
The Decemberists' "The Hazards of Love" (Capitol) could start in the top 30 of the tally next week, following its early exclusive release through iTunes and on 180 gram vinyl in select indie stores. On March 24, the set becomes available in all standard physical and digital formats.
On Amazon.com's list, Kelly's album is third behind U2's No Line On The Horizon and Diana Krall's Quiet Nights. Amazon is current selling Clarkson's latest album for $9.99. Kelly's album is currently #2 on iTunes behind The Decemberists' The Hazards of Love. Kelly's album can be purchased here on iTunes.
Kelly Clarkson's New Album Leaked Accidentally by Norwegian iTunes
Oops. The Norway division of Apple's iTunes service accidentally leaked Kelly Clarkson's entire new album, All I Ever Wanted. Rolling Stonereports that a pre-purchase error let Norway iTunes users download the entire album. It spread around the Internet from there.
Clarkson fans rejoiced earlier today when they noticed that Norwegian iTunes was streaming 30-second clips of each song on All I Ever Wanted, which is typical of the digital music service's pre-purchase preview. However, listeners soon realized that they could, due to an iTunes error, purchase the entire new album rather than just settle for snippets. And as things snowball quickly on the Internet, All I Ever Wanted was quickly distributed on P2P sites and message boards.
Kelly Clarkson's new album was suppposed to be released in March. The Amazon.com listing shows a release date of March 10th. The good news for Kelly is that the album is getting positive reviews from fans who have heard it. You can read more about the leaked album here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
