2010 Oscar Fashions: Molly Ringwald

Photo of Molly Ringwald

Molly Ringwald appeared at the Academy Awards in the segment honoring director John Hughes. Molly, who starred in such classic films as Sixteen Candles and who now stars in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, looked fab in an amethyst one shoulder gown by Todd Thomas. Todd, who is also a costume designer, designed the avant garde angel wings for the Victoria's Secret fashion show in November.

Molly accessorized her gown with a vintage brass bracelet and pin designed by legendary contemporary artist Alexander Calder. Calder is better known for his paintings and sculptures (which are in major museums around the world) but he made quite a bit of jewelry in the 1930s and 1940s. A necklace similar to the pieces Molly is wearing sold at Christie's this past fall for $254,000. Molly told People magazine that she was thrilled to wear Calder's jewelry, saying "It's a huge honor to wear his jewelry. I feel very honored." She also said her six year old daughter Mathilda helped pick the gown: she loved the color.

An international traveling exhibit of 90 pieces of jewelry made by Calder was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last year. Here's a closeup of the Calder jewelry pieces Molly wore:

More Pieces From Tom Binns Alice in Wonderland Collection Unveiled

Tom Binns Alice in Wonderland Jewelry

More pieces from jeweler Tom Binns collection for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland film have been unvealed. The collection was first announced last year. You can see more of the pieces here. The jewelry pieces will cost over $1,000 each. There will be a lower priced line called Tom Binns for Disney Couture. Tiny Sparkly Things says the pieces will be available at high end boutiques, Bloomingdales and bloomingdales.com.

Tom Binns told Vogue UK, "The story is full of very iconic images, so it wasn't difficult to find symbols that represent the stories - like the Mad Hatter's top hat and the watch, as time is a big reference point for the story. In fact, every scene in the book has something iconic that would represent it from start to finish."

Tom Binns focused on five characters and scenes for his designs: the White Queen, the Mad Hatter, the Red Queen, the Tea Party and the Cheshire Cat. He said he made forty pieces, but he easily could have made 200.

Cindy Crawford Launching Jewelry Line with J.C. Penney

Photo of Cindy Crawford

WWD reports that Cindy Crawford is launching a new jewelry line with J.C. Penney. The line will be called One Kiss.
The 40-piece collection, called One Kiss, is to hit 600 J.C. Penney stores and jcp.com in April. The line features sterling silver, gemstone and diamond designs inspired by a henna symbol that translates to "kiss." The pieces range from layered chains to drop earrings to stackable rings, all retailing for between $79 and $299.

One Kiss is Crawford's second partnership with the $15.1 billion retailer. In April, she signed with Penney's to launch a home and bedding collection, Cindy Crawford Style.

"Once I got 'married' to J.C. Penney, the opportunity to do more just seemed like the right thing to do and jewelry was a fun departure from bedding," Crawford said. "When I started speaking with the jewelry team, we were definitely aware of the success of the Jane Seymour collection for Kay [Jewelers] and her universal symbol of an open heart. But obviously, we can't redo what someone else has done. So we looked for a universal shape that had an appealing aesthetic. We came across this henna symbol for 'kiss,' which I liked. It was cool, but I love what it means. It's not necessarily a romantic kiss, it could be a mother's kiss. You can also buy it for yourself."
Cindy and the design team camped out at her Malibu home for long hours to design the line. Cindy says she wanted the line to reflect who she is: she spends lots of time at the beach and usually wears jeans. She wanted the jewelry to fit into her own lifestyle.

The new collaboration is part of Penney's plans to add upscale lines at affordable prices. The Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen line Olsenboye is also a part of this strategy.
