Jennifer Hudson Sings If This Isn't Love on The Today Show
Jennifer Hudson appeared on The Today Show; she told Matt Lauer that she and her fiance have set a wedding date, although she wouldn't say when it is. She talked about how her faith in God helped her through her family tragedy. She then sang her latest single, "If This Isn't Love." Take a look:
At a Jennifer Hudson and Robin Thicke concert in Atlanta last night, Jennifer introduced a surprise guest: Jennifer Holliday, the woman who really created the character of Effie in Dreamgirls on Broadway back in the 1980s. Jennifer and Jennifer sing their signature song, "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going", as a duet. They have sung this song together before at the BET Awards, but to see them together again was a surprise.
Jennifer Holliday has lost 140 pounds with a liquid fast and then gastric bypass surgery: she's barely recognizable from her days on Broadway. There were concerns that such a large weight loss would wreck her voice (it's happened to opera singers), but her voice seems to be holding up just fine, although her voice does sound strained during part of the performance. Jennifer Hudson sounds great, as usual. Take a look:
Producer: Jennifer Hudson Lip Synched the National Anthem
Well, perhaps it was a bit too perfect for a live performance now that we think about it. The producer of the Super Bowl halftime show told the Associated Press that Jennifer Hudson lip synched her rousing rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" the Super Bowl Sunday.
But after the game, the show's producer, "American Idol" music director Ricky Minor, told The Associated Press that, at his request, Hudson lip-synched the anthem to a previously recorded track.
"This was such an important performance, because it's the first time everyone has seen Jennifer. But she's in such a great place, with such great spirits, and time can heal her wounds. She's on fire right now and totally grounded," said Minor, who has produced a number of Super Bowl pregame performances, including Whitney Houston's iconic 1991 rendition of the anthem, also in Tampa, which is considered one of the all-time greats.
Minor explained that he insisted that both Hudson and Faith Hill, who performed "America the Beautiful" before Hudson, sing to the prerecorded tracks the NFL requires them to submit a week before the game.
"That's the right way to do it," Minor said. "There's too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the performance."
Jennifer Hudson Sings National Anthem at Super Bowl
Jennifer Hudson returned to performing for the first time since the tragic deaths of her mother, brother and nephew. Jennifer sang "The Star Spangled Banner" during the pre-game ceremonies at the Super Bowl today -- and she sounded amazing. Take a look:
Update: According to the producer of the show, Jennifer lip synched the song to a pre-recorded track. The producer asked both Jennifer and Faith Hill to use backing tracks, to make sure the performances were perfect.
Jennifer Hudson gets made over before recording a video for her upcoming single, "If This Isn't Love." MTV says the music video for the single will be released February 9th.
Jennifer Hudson is also performing at the Super Bowl on Sunday. She will perform the National Anthem prior to the coin toss. The Super Bowl will be her first appearance since the family tragedy last October when she lost her mother, brother and nephew. Jennifer Hudson will also be performing at the Grammys.
One of the more puzzling ensembles seen at the Oscars was the Oscar de la Renta brown gown with a hideous gold python shrug worn by Best Supporting Actress winner Jennifer Hudson. The color was not flattering and the shrug simply looked ridiculous. On the E! pre-show, viewers saw Vogue's Andre Leon Talley escorting Hudson to the atelier of Oscar de la Renta so he could design a dress for her. The sketches of the dress looked pretty cool, actually, but a designer of de la Renta's skill should have known that it wouldn't translate in real life to a curvy woman. You need to be six feet tall, weigh 120 lbs and have Big Attitude as you strut down a fashion runway to wear something like that. And even then, you run the risk of looking like a space alien.
Well, according to The New York Post, Hudson hated the dress but was forced into wearing it by a tyrannical Talley.
....Jennifer Hudson, did win big - but lost big, too, because of the much ridiculed metallic bolero Andre Leon Talley made her put on. (Post fashion editor Serena French said it made her look "lost in space.") "Jennifer was kind of sponsored by Talley and Vogue," said one fashionista. "Andre insisted she wear that hideous Oscar de la Renta dress with the awful, awful gold python bolero.
"Jennifer really didn't want to, and so [noted stylist] Jessica Paster got her a beautiful gold Roberto Cavalli custom-made. But when Andre found out, he went ballistic. Moments before she left for the show, there was a power struggle and Jennifer ended up putting his outfit on."
Jennifer removed the bolero before she took the stage to accept her Oscar, which was a wise choice. That way, her dress just looked dull, not crazy. Later she did change into the gold Cavalli dress for the Governor's Ball and she looked fabulous. We're not sure why Andre made such a fashion misstep: he did a much better job of picking all the clothes for Melania Trump's over the top wedding to the Donald. Maybe Melania just refused to wear any boleros or any brown evening gowns.
