Naomi Campbell Says Companies Using Recession As Excuse Not to Hire Black Models

Supermodel Naomi Campbell is speaking out, saying that the recession is being used as an excuse for companies not to use black models in their ad campaigns. The Telegraph reports:
"This year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced," she says. "I don't see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns." Campbell, who was born in London to a mother of Caribbean descent, refers to the publication last year of a special edition of Italian Vogue dedicated to non-white models. "That made some noise, but, unfortunately, we are the same as before," she says. "People, in the panic of the recession, don't dare to put a girl of colour in their campaign, full stop. Nor of any other race. It's a shame. It's very sad."

*****

In 1988, Campbell appeared on the cover of French Vogue as its first black cover girl after Yves St Laurent, her late friend and mentor, threatened to withdraw all of his advertising from the magazine following its refusal to place Campbell, or any black model, on its front page. She also became the first black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue. Earlier this year, she described the fashion industry as "racist". In a magazine interview, she was quoted as saying "You know, the American president may be black, but, as a black woman, I am still an exception in this business. I always have to work harder to be treated equally."
Designer Bruce Oldfield agreed with Naomi saying, "It's absolutely true that black models will be not as popular for advertising companies and magazine covers as white girls...In a recession, it's probably doubly difficult for black girls to get a booking."

Well, let's see. There's Halle Berry for Revlon. Beyonce has quite a few commercial contracts. Rihanna and Queen Latifah both have CoverGirl contracts. Serena and Venus Williams have many endorsement deals. So that's six we can think of, which certainly is not very many. But they are all celebrities, either in music or sports. None of them are models, which is what we think Naomi is getting at. Tyra Banks has said that all models are losing cosmetics contracts lately because the companies want to hire established celebrities, not models. And black models land even fewer contracts than white models.

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry made a visit to Gap's 1969 Jeans pop-up store on Robertson Blvd. last night. The store will be open through Sept. 27 and features Gap's new 1969 Premium Jeans collection. Gap's head of design, Patrick Robinson, hosted a celebrity launch party last night DJ'd by Joel Maddan of Good Charlotte.

"With this new collection, named in honor of Gap's debut year, we completely reworked and redesigned the jeans at every level, from design and fit to fabric, fasteners and production," said Gap's EVP of Design, Patrick Robinson. "Our goal was to create a range of styles that were cool, sexy and relevant for right now. Every style tells a story and there's a fit for everyone - we created great fitting jeans that really complement and accentuate different body types."

Halle Berry is Bubbly in Harper's Bazaar

Photos of Halle Berry

Halle Berry looks stunning in the May issue of Harper's Bazaar. On the left, Halle stands in a giant bubble wearing a Dior crepe georgette dress with belt, bracelets by De Beers and Christian Louboutin platform heels. On the right, Halle is waring a bustier and skirt by Blumarine, and a bracelet and ring by Iradj Moini. The cover shot is so photoshopped and awful that we refuse to run it. Halle is gorgeous. We don't know what was going on with the cover. It's a mystery.

In the accompanying interview says she wants more kids, but is totally done with marriage. She also talks about food binges and how she keeps her mojo.
Laura Brown: Tell me how you keep your mojo.

Halle Berry: I have a 33-year-old man. That'll keep your mojo mojo-in'.

LB: How has your body changed since you had Nahla?

HB: Having a baby takes so much from you. It's the most glorious thing you'll ever do, but the aftermath is not so glorious! So now I'm having to exercise, eat a little bit differently, take a lot more vitamins.

LB: Do you ever go on a food binge?

HB: I like Doritos. I'm usually watching The Biggest Loser eating Doritos.

LB: What do you think of actresses who say they don't work at staying slinky?

HB: God bless them if they're telling the truth. It's questionable if they are. I always had to diet. I'm diabetic, so it's a lifestyle for me anyway just to stay healthy and not end up in the hospital.

*****

LB: Would you ever get married again?

HB: No. I'm done. Also, I happened to find a person who feels done too, and he's never even been married before. So it works.

LB: More children?

HB: Yes. My pregnancy was amazing. I was happy that whole time, I felt good, I had energy, I was like Superwoman. I wish I could feel like that for the rest of my life, that's how fantastic it was.

It had never occurred to us that watching other people being deprived of treats and forced to exercise endlessly on television might trigger Doritos cravings in the viewers. But now that we think about it, it might be a common response.

Okay, fine. Here's the cover. We warned you it was awful.

Halle Berry's Perfume Arrives in Stores Next Week

Halle by Halle Berry

Halle's new fragrance, Halle by Halle Berry, will arrive in stores next week. The perfume is the result of Halle Berry's collaboration with Coty, Inc. Style.com says that Halle "reportedly delights in mixing and layering scents to create her own signature eau de parfum."

Now Smell This has this description of Halle's new perfume:
Halle is a woody oriental featuring Berry's favorite notes, fig and mimosa. Additional notes include bergamot, pear blossom, freesia, hibiscus, ultra mimosa, sandalwood, driftwood, cashmere musk, olibanum and sensual amber.
In an unrelated note, Halle is apparently planning to go bald for an upcoming role in a film called Nappily Ever After. Halle told Essence, "I'm shaving it off! I know. Here comes the controversy, but ... it'll grow back -- I hope!"

Halle Berry is the Sexiest Woman Alive

Photo of two Esquire magazine covers

Esquire has named Halle Berry the Sexiest Woman Alive and for some reason, they decided to have Halle recreate the infamous December, 2000 Bill Clinton cover. The only difference? Halle has no pants. And her bra is showing. Of course, she is being touted as the sexiest woman alive and she's not a politician or businesswoman, but still...it just struck us as odd, especially given the fact that the photographer Cliff Watts said "She's a powerful woman; he's a powerful man. It's basically the female equivalent of the Clinton cover." So women are only powerful when they have no pants on? Or when their shirts are open to display a black pushup bra? Would Nancy Pelosi or Condoleezza Rice pose this way and still be seen as powerful? Not in this universe.

But putting aside the photographer's nonsensical ramblings (Cliff is the godfather to Halle's new baby, so perhaps we're being too hard on him): Halle does looks fabulous. She accepted the honor with a sense of humor, saying:
"I've been in the business for more than twenty years, and you decide now, at this particular time, that I'm the sexiest woman alive? Come on. I mean, you couldn't go with the Bond-girl year? You didn't like the orange bikini? I liked the orange bikini. That would have been a pretty good year. Or what about the Monster's Ball year? That was a sexy moment. Couldn't you have packaged that up with some list of the best movie sex scenes ever? That would have been very easy, very magaziney. But 2008? Well, I don't know exactly what it means, but being forty-two and having just had a baby, I think I'll take it."
