Michelle Obama to Serve as Honorary National President of Girl Scouts

Photo of the Obamas with the girl scouts

Michelle Obama has agreed to serve as the Honorary National President of the Girl Scouts of America.

"It is my great pleasure to serve as Honorary National President of Girl Scouts," said Michelle Obama. "With their innovative new programming, ground-breaking research, and emphasis on service and leadership, Girl Scouts is preparing the women of tomorrow to be a positive force for change – in their own lives, their communities, and across the globe."

This is a tradition that goes back to 1917, when First Lady Edith B. Wilson became the first Honorary National President of the Girl Scout movement. Every successive First Lady has served in the honorary position. The Girl Scouts plan to work with Michelle Obama on focus areas such as public service, leadershipa and healthy living.

"From bullying to obesity to concern over the economy, our nation's girls are facing significant challenges," said Kathy Cloninger, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of the USA. "Girl Scouts is excited to work with the First Lady's office to ensure that all girls can overcome the challenges they face, and that they have the skills, resources and opportunities they need to become strong, independent young leaders."

Does this mean that Malia and Sasha will be Girl Scouts? We loved being Girl Scouts. Camp outs, merit badges, parties, new friends....good times. You can see an interesting slide show of how the Girl Scout uniforms have changed over time here. The retro ones really were much cuter. But not as practical, of course.

Dolly Parton Launches Girl Scouts Patch Program

Dolly Parton Tansai Girls Scouts

Dolly Parton and Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council are launching a global "Coat of Many Colors" patch program created and piloted this spring by Tanasi Girl Scouts. The patch program is based on Parton's ballad about taking pride in yourself-no matter the circumstances.

"Have you ever felt bad about being different?" Parton asks Girl Scouts. "I'll bet you have, but you shouldn't-being different is what makes you special!"

Parton immortalized her coat of many colors in her 1971 song, "Coat of Many Colors." Dolly Parton's mother sewed the now famous garment from rags. Young Dolly proudly wore the coat to school, only to find classmates making fun of it. Parton turned the devastating experience into a song and now, through Tanasi Council, the "Coat of Many Colors" patch can help Girl Scouts develop self-esteem and compassion for others.

The first 450 girls who earned the patch are from Parton's native East Tennessee, and she honored them at her Dollywood theme park over the weekend with colorful patches and huge hugs. She also performed the song for the girls.

"Now, I think twice before saying something to someone who looks different; I don’t want to hurt their feelings," said Girl Scout Melia Killion. "Plus, you can be rich without having a lot of money, as long as you have people who love you ... And I am rich!"

Details about the patch program can be found at tanasi.org

Sales of Girl Scout Cookies Fall

Girl Scount Thin Mint CookiesUSA Today reports that sales of Girl Scout cookies are down. Pre-order sales for the cookies are down 19% in some regions. One of the reasons for the diminishing sales of Girl Scout cookies is that people are placing orders for fewer boxes.
About two-thirds of the 133 Girl Scout councils nationwide sell cookies from January through March, Tompkins says. The rest sell in the fall. Most proceeds, she says, go to troops and councils to pay for trips, community projects and scholarships.

Love said some leaders are reporting longtime customers purchasing in smaller quantities.

"If a customer was purchasing six to eight boxes, now they're purchasing three to four," she says.
Some boxes of Girl Scout cookies were downsized this year but that shouldn't be impacting sales. The cookies were also unaffected by the recent peanut product recall.

Girl Scout cookies are sold by troops from individual Girl Scout councils. You can find a troup council near you using this form. You can find out about the different types of Girl Scout cookies here.

Some Girl Scout Cookie Boxes Now Contain Less Cookies

Girl Scouts Thin Mint CookiesGirl Scouts of the USA have resized some of their cookie boxes. The Dallas Morning News reports that some of the cookie boxes like Thin Mints contain less cookies than before.
Fewer cookies were packaged into Thin Mints, Do-si-dos and Tagalongs boxes this year, and the Lemon Chalet Crème cookies were resized to compensate for the rising cost of baking staples.

No changes were made to other cookies, according to the Girl Scouts of the USA.
The reason behind the changes is the cost to make the cookies has climbed and the Girls Scouts didn't want to cut back on taste or raise prices. The cookies will still cost $3.50 a box. The Dallas Morning News says "Flour rose in cost by more than 30 percent, various cooking oils by 40 percent to 187 percent, and cocoa by at least 20 percent."

We still love Girl Scout cookies even if there are less of them per box. If you want to order some Girl Scout Cookies the girlscoutcookies.org website will help you find the Girl Scout council nearest you. They also have a MySpace and Flickr. The Girl Scouts also recently issued a statement saying that none of their cookies are affected by the peanut butter recall.
