New Legoland Being Built in Central Florida

LegolandThe Miami Herald is reporting that Merlin Entertainments Group is building a Legoland park in Central Florida. The shuttered Cypress Gardens theme park and botanical garden will undergo a makeover to become the new Legoland.
With up to 50 new rides, shows and attractions, it will be the biggest of five Legolands worldwide. The park is packaged to entice parents and kids 2 to 12 years old to spend a day immersed in a world that revolves around plastic Lego bricks, one of the world's most popular toys.

The plans include reopening the historic botanical garden that founders Dick and Julie Pope carved out of a cypress swamp in 1936 and fashioned into what was claimed to be Florida's first theme park. The once-famous water ski shows could return in the form of a Lego-themed stunt show, and the park will get its own studio with a full-time staff of Lego model artists. Cypress Gardens' leftover midway thrill rides and one or both of its wooden roller coasters will be sold.
The Legoland location in Carlsbad, California reportedly gets 2 million visitors a year. Legoland also has locations in Denmark, Germany and the UK. Playthings says the Legoland in Central Florida will be the second biggest Legoland in the world when it opens in 2011.

Soundgarden to Reunite for 2010 Concerts

SoundgardenBillboard.com reports that Soundgarden will reunite for concerts in 2010. The band has not played live since 1997.
The Seattle rock quartet -- Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron -- has not played live since splitting up in the spring of 1997.

Sources tell Billboard the group is weighing offers from several major U.S. and international festivals, but a tour routing is still a work in progress, due to Cameron's prior commitments to play with Pearl Jam in the spring and summer.

Cameron has been Pearl Jam's permanent drummer since 1998; that group recently announced its first North American date of 2010 as part of the second weekend of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (April 29-May 2), and will also play 10 European shows from June 22 in Dublin through July 10 in Oeiras, Portugal.
A message on the soundgardenworld.com website reads, "The 12 year break is over and school is back in session. Sign up now. Knights of the Soundtable ride again!" The same message was posted by lead singer Chris Cornell on his Twitter account, @chriscornell.

Video: Michelle Obama Talks Healthy Eating, White House Garden

First Lady Michelle Obama and White House chef Sam Kass tell the story of the first garden on White House grounds since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden during World War II. This new garden was planted in the Spring of 2009 with the help of local elementary school children and has yielded a constant supply fresh produce for the First Family and White House events.

Michelle talks about how she got focused on healthy eating, saying: "We were a busy working family. I'd find it difficult to feed my family in a healthy way - quickly. So i decided to change our diet. This happened throughout the course of the campaign, with simple things. I started adding more fruits and vegetables, trying to sit down and prepare a meal as a family a couple times a week, and eating out a little bit less. Trying to eliminate processed and sugary foods as much as possible. And I saw some really immediate results with just those minor changes. I thought well, If i could help other families learn these small changes in my role as first lady, that would be a good thing."

Late Blight Still Killing Tomato Plants in the Northeast

Concerns about late blight continue in the Northeast. The plant disease is the same one that caused the potato famine in the 1840s. Reuters reports that the airborne disease spread by spores continues to kill tomato plans in the Northeast. Plants have been pulled from major retailers in an attempt to slow the spread of late blight. These stores include Wal-mart, Home Depot, Sears, Kmart and Lowe's.
"Late blight has never occurred this early and this widespread in the United States," said Meg McGrath, a plant pathologist at Cornell University's extension center in Riverhead, New York.

She said the fungal disease, spread by spores carried in the air, has made its way into the garden centers of large retail chains in the Northeastern United States.

"Wal-mart, Home Depot, Sears, Kmart and Lowe's are some of the stores the plants have been seen in," McGrath said in a telephone interview.
The article says many organic farms and home gardners are also at risk. The article says many organic farms won't use fungicide sprays which can kill blight. Steve Funk show how the late blight is killing tomatoes for the Lancaster Online. Take a look:

Smith and Hawken Folds, Begins Liquidation Sales

Upscale gardening retailer Smith and Hawken is closing its doors. The Mercury News reports that Smith & Haken's parent company Scotts Miracle-Gro is closing down all 58 retail stores. Liquidation sales have already started at many retail locations.
Ohio parent company Scotts Miracle-Gro said Wednesday that it will cease Smith & Hawken business by the end of 2009, having hired a liquidator to help it do so.

The move calls for the closing of all of Smith & Hawken's 56 retail stores — including those in Palo Alto, Los Gatos, Burlingame, Berkeley and Walnut Creek. Going-out-of-business sales started Thursday.

"I can't believe it's closing — look at all the signs," said Anne Thatcher, pointing to postings in the Los Gatos store saying everything was up to 30 percent off. "I've always shopped here; they have everything from garden furniture to cute accessories to good healthy, plants.''
KCBS reports that liquidation is already taking place at the retailer's six Bay Area stores.

Internet Retailer notes that the ecommerce site has already closed. The Smith and Hawken website has a message thanking customers for 30 wonderful years.

White House Has First Honey Harvest

Photo of White House bees

Charlie Brandts, a White House carpenter as well as beekeeper, is shown here collecting the first batch of honey from the beehives on the South Lawn of the White House. The White House chefs have said they are looking forward to using produce from the White House garden and the honey made by the official White House bees. We know absolutely nothing about beekeeping, other than what we gleaned from the indie film, Ulee's Gold, but we think the fact that Charlie isn't wearing gloves means he is very experienced at beekeeping (novices always have to wear gloves). In any event, we wouldn't get near a beehive without a full hazmat suit.

The Queen Adds Vegetable Patch at Buckingham Palace

The Queen has a new vegetable patch at Buckingham Palace. The BBC reports that the Queen's deputy head gardener, Claire Midgeley, came up with the idea.
She said: "We are trying to promote growing your own food and vegetables, getting families and children involved, getting their hands dirty. "It's a growing movement throughout the country and we're just hoping to encourage that." This is the first time vegetables have been grown in the backyard of the monarch's London residence since World War II. Then, as part of the Dig for Victory campaign, royals and others produced 1.3m tons of food.
The Telegraph reports that the Queen's organic vegetable patch is about 10 yards by eight yards located in an area of the garden called the Yard Bed.

Gardening is one of this year's big trends. First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground on a new White House garden earlier this year.
