Ingrid Bergstrom-Kendrick Cool vs. Cruel Fur-Free Design Competition
The Humane Society of the United States and The Art Institutes have announced that Ingrid Bergstrom-Kendrick from The Art Institute of Vancouver was named the grand prize winner of the fifth annual Cool vs. Cruel Fur-Free Fashion Design Competition. Her winning design is pictured above. Ingrid Bergstrom-Kendrick will be honored at the Cool vs. Cruel awards ceremony in New York City on Wednesday. The event will be hosted by HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle and will feature DJ Samantha Ronson.
Bergstrom-Kendrick used layering of the dress fabric on the sleeves to explore the concept and volume of animal fur. Her design was selected by a panel of industry professionals including designers Marc Bouwer, Charlotte Ronson, Nick Friedberg, Victoria Bartlett and Elizabeth Olsen; magazine editors Dana Wood, Mickey Boardman and Shelly Vella; and fashion photographer Nigel Barker.
"These winning garments testify to the reality that couture and fur-free fashion can go hand in hand," said Sarika Reuben, deputy manager of the fur-free campaign for The Humane Society of the United States. "We are always amazed at the creative, cruelty-free ways Art Institute students find to reinterpret animal fur."

No Fur For Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Or Michelle Obama
The Washington Times reports that a leaked letter from France's First Lady Carli Bruni-Sarkozy indicates that she does not wear fur.
"I do not wear, buy or own fur," wrote France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, in a letter obtained by G2, to Dan Mathews, senior vice president for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals U.S. "Every designer who kindly lends me clothes for public appearances can tell you that I do not accept to wear fur pieces, even when they're only a small part of the outfit."
In a letter to Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy that was leaked to the Associated Press, PETA U.S. had expressed concerns about photographs that showed Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy wearing what appeared to be fur.
"I hope this letter answers the questions you may have had," the vexed former supermodel wrote. "Do not hesitate to write to me directly in the future or if you prefer to go through wire service, please take the time to check facts before publication."
The Washington Times reports that First Lady Michelle Obama also does not wear fur.
"We've never written to Michelle Obama about this issue because we have always known her to be fur-free," says Amanda Schinke, media campaigns coordinator for PETA.
"Mrs. Obama does not wear fur," Mrs. O's deputy press secretary Semonti Mustaphi confirmed.

Winners of the Cool vs. Cruel Fur-free Fashion Competition Announced
The Humane Society of the United States and The Art Institutes have announced the winners of the annual Cool vs. Cruel fur-free fashion design competition. The competition encourages designers to explore fur-free, animal-friendly fashions. Gohar Rajabzadeh from Miami International University of Art & Design was named this year's grand prize winner. Rajabzadeh's winning design (pictured above on the left) is a faux fur coat. In place of what would have been animal fur, she used acrylic yarns to give the same luxurious look in a wrap coat with a full hood that frames the face. The second place winner was Tatiana Zaykovskaya - her dress is pictured above on the right.
"These winning garments prove that couture and fur-free designs go hand in hand," said Heidi Prescott senior vice president of campaigns for The Humane Society of the United States. "By using animal-friendly materials in such a fashion-forward way, these student designers are emulating the many fashion icons who refuse to participate in the cruelty inherent in the fur industry."
You can see the designs of the other winners here.
