Disgraced Tiger Woods Forced to Share Video Game Cover With Another Golfer
Electronic Arts decided to stick with Tiger Woods for its video game despite his string of tawdry affairs. However, Tiger Woods is no longer alone on the game's box cover. In previous years it was just Tiger Woods on the cover of the sports video game. Now Tiger Woods has to share the cover space with Rory McIlroy, a young golfer from Northern Ireland. ESPN has an interview with Rory here.
The Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 video game will be out for the Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 in June. Tiger Woods better get his act together or the next version of the game could be called Rory McIlroy PGA Tour 12. Pictured below are some of the prior cover boxes for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour video games where a scandal-free Tiger had the cover all to himself.
Electronic Arts is celebrating the ten year anniversary of The Sims, the game that lets players create and live a virtual, simulated life on a computer. Since the original The Sims debut on February 4, 2000, the franchise has produced three core games – The Sims, The Sims 2, and The Sims 3. Lifetime unit sales have eclipsed 125 million worldwide.
"No other game in the history of electronic entertainment has ever had the broad, nearly universal appeal of The Sims franchise," says Logan Decker, Editor-in-Chief of PC Gamer magazine. "Everybody plays it: hardcore gamers, young women, celebrities, conservatives, professors, soldiers, grandmothers, even people who say they don't like computer games. And the game-or, rather, the experience-has thrived throughout ten years of sequels and countless expansion packs because EA has kept the environment fresh and infinitely customizable while never getting in the way of the game's primary focus-the player's imagination and the natural inclination of all human beings to create meaningful stories."
Electronic Arts Sticking With Tiger Woods For Video Game Franchise
Electronic Arts completely branded its PGA Tour video game series with Tiger Woods. For years Tiger Woods has appeared on the cover of EA Sports' annual PGA Tour video games. Tiger Woods' name is even part of the game's title. Tiger Woods' affairs and decision to leave golf indefinitely could cost Electronic Arts a lot of money. Games Beat reports that Electronic Arts plans to stick with Tiger Woods despite the golf star's actions.
Woods has served as the brand and cover athlete for EA's PGA golf games for years. A week ago, EA issued a statement saying that it would stand by Woods. But if the games bearing Woods’ name fail to sell, you can bet that EA will find a new cover athlete. It will just be hard to find someone with the star power of Woods, who has had a remarkable career in professional golf.
Woods admitted to "infidelity" on his web site and wrote, "After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person."
EA has been using Woods to brand its golf games for more than a decade and has launched 12 games based on the Tiger Woods PGA Tour brand game.
EA Sports issued a statement saying, "We respect that this is a very difficult, and private, situation for Tiger and his family. At this time, the strategy for our Tiger Woods PGA TOUR business remains unchanged."
Electronic Arts doesn't have a lot of choice. They named the game after Tiger and rebranding it would be very expensive. Electronic Arts' best option is to wait and see what happens with Tiger Woods. Electronic Arts will be hoping that Tiger Woods can repair his image and return to the game of golf.
Electronic Arts has reinterpreted Dante Alighieri's epic poem as a video game. The plot description from the game's website has the hero, Dante, attempting to rescue the soul of his lover from Hell.
Inspired by the real Dante Alighieri, but adapted for a new generation and a new medium, the hero of the game is a soldier who defies death and fights for love against impossible odds. The Italian mercenary Dante returns home from the wars to find that his beloved Beatrice has been murdered, and her soul pulled down into Hell by a dark force. He gives chase, and vows to get her back. For weapons, he wields Death's soul-reaping scythe, and commands holy powers of the cross, given to him by Beatrice.
The release date of the game is February, 2010. Reuters says epic poem are worked into the game. Take a look:
