Nuclear Bunker for Sale on eBay

eBay Nuclear Bunker

A nuclear bunker is for sale here on eBay UK. The product's description says it is a "rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Cold War History."
The bunker is in a perfect location on farmland and offers the freedom of having your own land and bunker, but with the security of being on private land which is fenced and securely gated. There is a right of way to the site 4’ 6” wide along a private road and field boundary. The site has its own purpose built stile, again to a right of way to the bunker, and is 200 yards from the road.

The bunker is accessed via a metal hatch and shaft. There is an access ladder to a depth of 15ft which leads to two rooms, one for the chemical toilet and a large monitoring room 15ft x 7ft 6ins, which was previously used as a monitoring room in the event of a nuclear attack. A ventilation shaft with two louvered vents is located alongside the entrance shaft with a second ventilation shaft at the other end of the room.

The bunker is completely dry and it would be hard to find one in such good condition. There is a BT line to a telephone in the bunker. However, communication would have been via teletalk (as seen in the photo). Lighting is supplied via a 12 volt battery and is in full working order.
Bidding for the nuclear bunker is already over 20,000 pounds, which is about $30,000 U.S. The auction runs until March 7th.

Oprah Winfrey Cleans Out Her Closet For eBay Auction

Oprahs Great Closet Cleanout

Oprah Winfrey has gone through her closet to find items to auction for Oprah's Great Closet Cleanout. The items Oprah picked out will be auctioned off here on eBay from March 1st through March 11th. All proceeds will benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. An article on Oprah.com explains the process Oprah went through as she went through her closet with Adam Glassman, O's creative director. There was one pair of shoes she just could not get rid of, even thoug she has never worn them and probably never will.
"Let's just start with the shoes-they're the easiest," Oprah says. "And I can see that this closet cleanout is going to give me a headache." She spies a pair of chunky-heeled, green suede oxford shoes. "Forget about them! I got those when I used to wear pants." Gone.

Adam holds up a pair of ivory lace knee-high boots. Oprah quickly comes to their defense. "Those I can't get rid of! They're beautiful. They're like sculpture!"

"Will you ever wear them again?" Adam asks.

"I never wore them ever, but I still can't get rid of them. They're closet jewelry. They make a closet look good." Onto the keeper pile they go.
Oprah chose more than 150 items to auction on eBay. Some of the items Oprah is auctioning off include:
  • Barry Kieselstein-Cord Bag
  • Chicago Olympic Delegation Jacket
  • Silver Metallic Booties
  • Green Lace Up Shoes
  • Ralph Lauren Cashmere Bucks
  • Yves Saint Laurent heels
You can view a slideshow of some of the items Oprah is auctioning off here.

Paris Court Orders eBay to Pay LVMH $275,000

The Paris District Court has ordered eBay to pay $275,000 to LVMH after it was found to be paying search engines to direct traffic to its website using Louis Vuitton brand keywords. Mispelled keywords such as "Wuiton" were also used to drive traffic.
The case concerns payments made by eBay to search engines such as Google and Yahoo for directing searches using particular keywords to eBay's site.

EBay, like many online businesses, pays to have large numbers of words call up a link to its site when typed into a search engine.

Thursday's ruling condemned eBay for buying terms such as "Louis Viton" or "Wuiton," as these are often used to advertise fake Louis Vuitton products. Trading such products on eBay damages Louis Vuitton's image, the court said.
CNET.com reports that Yohan Ruso, director general of eBay in France, released the following statement:
"This case is about the use of Adwords to direct buyers' listings for authentic goods from eBay sellers. This issue is being used by certain Rights Owners as an excuse to retain total control of what people can buy, where they can buy it from, and how much they have to pay. This is why 750,000 Europeans signed a petition to the European Parliament last year, protesting barriers to Internet trade."
Reuters reports that eBay thinks to fine is too high.
"We are extremely disappointed by this decision," Yohan Ruso, head of Ebay France told Reuters. "We recognise the facts but we think the sanction is disproportionate."

Louis Vuitton said the tribunal had found Ebay liable for "harming the trademark and domain name of Louis Vuitton".

For its part, Ebay said the words were commercial links used in search engines to redirect consumers to Ebay to buy genuine Louis Vuitton goods.

"This issue is being used by certain rights owners as an excuse to retain total control of what people can buy, where they can buy it from and how much they have to pay," Ebay said in a statement.
LMVH also won a lawsuit against eBay in 2008 when the court said eBay had not done enough to stop the sale of counterfeit goods over the Internet.

Narciso Rodriguez Opening eBay Store

Narciso Rodriguez is opening an eBay store, according to WWD. The store will launch on February 15, 2010.
The eight-piece spring collection includes matte jersey dresses and a denim suit -- more relaxed, accessible versions of the designer's graphic classics, at considerably lower prices ($75 for a T-shirt; $350 for the reversible cotton coat). "This is a great way to not need a secondary line," adds Rodriguez.
Narciso said it was like having his own boutique. The online store was created in collaboration with eBay.

Ebay Recorded 1.5 Million Mobile Phone Sales During Holidays

eBay Logo MirrorMobile shopping played a major role in eBay.com's holiday sales. The company says 1.5 million items were bought on eBay using mobile phones worldwide this holiday. Ebay says its mobile sales included luxury items like gold buillon, a $10,000 Steinway piano and a Hermes Kelly bag.

"Mobile is changing the way people shop this holiday season," said Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay marketplaces. "With eBay on your iPhone, great deals are available anytime, anywhere. Ebay Technical Problems Frustrate Shoppers, Sellers

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ebay suffered periodic disruptions in service Saturday, frustrating many shoppers and worrying sellers who are gearing up for the holiday shopping season.
Sellers say they first began noticing problems with eBay's search system on Saturday morning. At 11:17 a.m. Pacific time, the company posted a note on its announcement board stating "we are experiencing some issues with a delay in search being displayed." A subsequent note from eBay stated that the search system was having difficulty "due to errors in some of our backend systems."

By late afternoon on Saturday, searches for "iPod" on eBay's U.S. site resulted in zero results, and an error message saying, "We were unable to run the search you entered. Please try again in a few minutes." An eBay spokesman said that the company would have full search functionality restored by Sunday. "The unanticipated technical issue resulted from a surge in live listings as sellers ramp up for the holiday season," said eBay vice president John Pluhowski.

Saturdays are big shopping days on Ebay, so the problems came at a particularly bad time. 11% of eBay's weekly sales occur on Saturday, according to ChannelAdvisor Corp.

GM Ends Ebay Experiment After Just 45 Days

The Wall Street Journal reports that General Motors is ending its short experiment to sell new cars in California through eBay. The experiment generated lots of traffic but it didn't help sell many new vehicles.
The companies declined to say how many cars were sold under the heavily advertised program, although GM said the number of sales directly connected to the effort was small. "We thought the program was successful but that this was not the right time," GM sales chief Mark LaNeve said.

Mr. LaNeve said the program did generate customer interest, including 1.5 million visits to a special section of eBay's Web site, and 15,000 customer leads for California dealers. He said GM hopes to try again with eBay next year.

When the program launched Aug. 11, GM Chief Executive Frederick "Fritz" Henderson said it was part of an effort to make car shopping more convenient.

Rob Chesney, vice president of eBay Motors, said he was "really pleased" with the results and would use lessons from the program to develop future programs for selling new cars on the site. He declined to say when or how that might happen. "We had no expectations in terms of what the measured result would be," Mr. Chesney said. The test was to see "if we offer consumers a new way to interact with the purchase of a car, would they engage?" The traffic to the site, he said, proves "there is a real proposition that we can build upon there."
The article said the GM car listings on eBay generated some low-ball offers from customers that dealers had to waste time sifting through. GM allowed the experiment to run for just 45 days.

Ebay Plans to Reduce Corporate Emissions by 15%

eBay Green TeamReuters reports that eBay has set a green emissions target. The online auction leader has committed to reduce its corporate emmissions by 15% by 2012, based on its 2008 emissions.
Bay said it will achieve that target through continuing investments in renewable energy and promoting "sustainable" habits tied to the travel and personal energy use of its 15,000-strong workforce.

EBay said that as an online company, a majority of its carbon footprint comes from the energy used at its data centers. So, tackling data management and infrastructure will be key to becoming more efficient. To that end, the company will unveil a "green" data center in 2010. EBay also said it will announce a fuel cell strategy in early 2010.
eBay's press release says the new data center is being built to the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standard. eBay is also encourages sustainable behavior among its large worldwide workforce. 2,000 members of eBay in 23 countries are part of the eBay Green Team. They have undertaken projects like a community garden and electronics recycling drive.
