Karl Lagerfeld to Design Collection for Hogan

The New York Times reports that Karl Lagerfeld will be collaborating with Tod's Diego Della Valle for a collection for Tod's Hogan brand.
Mr. Lagerfeld, 76, described Hogan as a "contemporary brand" and said in a statement that he liked "the idea of collaborating" with Diego Della Valle, the founder, president and chief executive of Tod's.

Mr. Della Valle is looking to globalize the reach of Hogan, founded in 1988. It has been developed by his son Emanuele as a creative and inventive provider of technosport and urban footwear and leather goods.
Not much is known about the future collection other than that it will include clothing, shoes and accessories and will debut in spring 2011. It will likely be a one-time only collaboration.

New Dell Smartphone Will Launch in China and Brazil First

Dell Mini 3

Dell has confirmed rumors they plan to enter the smartphone market. Dell will be starting with China and Brazil and not the U.S. or Europe. China Mobile and Claro in Brazil will be the first two supporting mobile operators to sell Dell Mini 3 smart phones. Dell says its Mini 3 smartphones are designed using Google's Android platform. They have a 3.5-inch high-definition touchscreen.

"Our entry into the smart phone category is a logical extension of Dell's consumer product evolution over the past two years," said Ron Garriques, President, Dell Global Consumer Group. "We are developing smaller and smarter mobile products that enable our customers to take their internet experience out of the home and do the things they want to do whenever and wherever they want."

Dell has not released information about when they would release a sell phone in the United States or the UK.

Michael Dell Talks Smartphones, Desktops

Dell LogoDell CEO Michael Dell said at the FireGlobal conference that the company will be launching a smartphone in 2010. He said it will be built with Google's Android software but they are also looking at other platforms.
"That's a starting point for us. You'll probably see products next year in the U.S. that are family members of the things we started in China." He added it will be built on Android, but they may use other open platforms, too. "There are some other open platforms that are emerging that are similar to other businesses we participate in."
Michael Dell also said that he thinks people only buy desktops if they are concerned about the cost or power. He also doesn't think netbooks will get much bigger: "I think it's leveling off at 12 to 15 percent of the market. I would be surprised if it went massively higher."

Dell Teases About Thin Adamo XPS Laptop

Dell Adamo

The WSJ Digit's reports that Dell announced its new Adamo XPS today but gave very little details about it. There is a side-view of the Adamo XPS on the website but that's about it. What we do know the Adamo XPS is that it is very thin - just 9.99 millimeters thick.
Dell offered "a glimpse," to use its language, of a new model of its style-conscious Adamo laptop that is less than a centimeter thick. The computer, called the Adamo XPS, is 9.99 millimeters thick, to be precise. That measurement is the reason the company chose to announce its existence on Wednesday (Get it? It’s 9/9/09). The current model is 16.5 millimeters thick.
We'd love to know more details but we will have to wait. Dell refused to give more details about the laptop to the WSJ Digit's blog.

Dell Launches Nickelodeon PCs for Kids

Dell Nickelodeon PC

Dell has launched a line of computers that have been slimed green for Nickelodeon. Reuters reports that the Nickelodeon PC line is based on Dell's Inspiron Mini 10v line, which starts at $300.
The 10-inch netbook has wireless Internet access, weighs less than 3 pounds and comes loaded with entertainment and educational content. It will also feature a personalized user interface with Nickelodeon-branded desktop wallpaper and icons, and easy access to the channel's online content.

Michael Tatelman, vice president of global consumer sales and marketing for Dell, said the Nickelodeon netbook is just the start of its co-branding effort as it pushes into areas such as college students and pro sports.

"The PC, like the smartphone, has become a 21st century symbol of self-expression. People are identified by what they carry, and people identify with what they carry," he said.
Reuters says the new line of PCs will be available starting in October at Dell.com, Wal-Mart locations and Walmart.com.

Pixie Geldof, Dasiy Lowe and Alice Dellal Reportedly Dropped by Agency

Marie Claire UK reports that Pixie Geldof, Dasiy Lowe and Alice Dellal have been dropped by Select Model Management. The girls may have been lost their jobs because of their party girl reputations.
The London agency confirmed today that it had closed its talent section, and would no longer be representing all three girls: 'It's correct we no longer have a talent section in our agency. This included girls such as Lowe and Geldof but we cannot comment on individuals because of legal issues.'

Reports suggest though that the agency had grown tired of the girl's constant late-nights. A source revealed: 'All the girls were being pictured partying hard. They were becoming over-exposed in the papers which is probably why Select thought the agency was moving in the wrong direction.'
It is good for models to keep their names in the press but if the press is negative it probably won't be helpful to an agency. There have been articles in the British press calling Pixie Geldof "wild child" - see here.

Update: A story from RTE Entertainment says the girls deny being dropped by Select Model Management. All three of the girls have apparently been picked up by Next Model Management.

Dell Developing Android Based Web Gadget

The Wall Street Journal reports that Dell is developing a small device that the people could use to access the Internet. The WSJ says people who have seen it say it is a little bigger than the iPod Touch.
The gadget would run on Google Inc.'s Android software, these people said. Two people who saw early prototypes described the device as slightly larger than Apple Inc.'s iPod Touch, which is similar to the iPhone but does not have cellphone capabilities.

Another person who was briefed on the company's plans said Dell may begin selling the device later this year, though this person said the plan could be delayed or scrapped entirely.

The development effort is one of the first experiments by a big-name PC maker in a nascent category of products known as mobile Internet devices, or MIDs,which are designed to fill a perceived gap between mobile phones and laptop computers.

A Dell spokesman declined to comment on any plans for the product category.
The article says Dell has also been developing smartphones that would be powered by Android. The Dell smartphone rumor first surfaced in January. If the Wall Street Journal is correct then it sounds like Dell plans to take on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch using Google's smartphone operating system.

Dell Makes Over $3 Million in Revenues With Twitter

Dell Outlet TwitterUSA Today reports that Dell says it is has made $3 million in revenue so far from its @delloutlet Twitter account.
"We've surpassed $2 million in revenue in terms of Dell Outlet sales, but we're also seeing that it's driving interest in new product as well," Stefanie Nelson wrote just after midnight Friday in the official Dell corporate blog. "We're seeing people come from @DellOutlet on Twitter into the Dell.com/outlet site, and then ultimately decide to purchase a new system from elsewhere on Dell.com.

If we factor those new system purchases that come from @DellOutlet, we've actually eclipsed $3 million in overall sales."

That's a drop in the bucket for a multil-billion company like Dell, of course. But it suggests all sorts of possibilities for how Twitter may ultimately earn some loot.
Dell Outlet has over 640,000 followers on its Twitter account. Dell's account is one of several retailers that have a large number of followers. You can see a directory of retailers on Twitter here.

Diego Della Valle Sees Profit on Saks Investment

Diego Della Valle has already shown a paper profit on his investment in Saks Fifth Avenue. Things are moving quickly: Della Valle is reportedly attempting to set up a personal meeting with the other major rival for the company, investor and shareholder Carlos Slim Helu.
Shares of Saks Inc. didn't hold onto all of the gains made last week, but Diego Della Valle has made a $3.1 million profit on his increased investment in the luxury retailer. Della Valle, chief executive officer of Tod's SpA, the Italian footwear and accessories firm that includes Saks on its account list, acquired a 5.9 percent stake in Saks through the acquisition of 8.48 million shares between Feb. 20 and May 7. The total consideration for the stake was $30.3 million, making the average price paid $3.57 a share.

*****

Shares fell during the rest of the week, ratcheting down 2 percent Friday to $3.94, but on paper, Della Valle was still holding a better than $3.1 million profit. In comments after the disclosure of earnings results on Tuesday, Stephen I. Sadove, chairman and ceo of Saks, described Della Valle as "a great vendor for Saks and knows the business. I am happy he is an investor in the company." The Italian entrepreneur has yet to comment on his stake but, according to a published report in Italy, he wants to meet with Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexican billionaire who owns 18.6 percent of Saks.
The market seems to like the fact that Della Valle and Helu are so determined to own the company: clearly they think Saks will rebound when the economy turns around.
