The Dalai Lama now has an official Twitter account. You can follow him on Twitter at @DalaiLama. VOA News reports that the Dalai Lama joined Twitter the day after a meeting with Twitter founder Evan Williams in Los Angeles, California. So far the Dalai Lama's office has been posting all of his messages. The Dalai Lama has not yet personally tweeted.
The Dalai Lama reportedly weighed in on the Tiger Woods scandal but only because he was asked. The Dalai Lama had no idea who Tiger Woods is - and he has no reason to know - but he said that when it comes to adultery "all religions have the same idea."
Tiger Woods mentioned turning towards Buddhism in his public statement on Friday. The Dalai Lama said self-discipline is one of Buddhism's highest values. He said, "I think mainly whether you call it Buddhism or another religion, self-discipline, that's important. Self-discipline with awareness of consequences."
Dalai Lama Meets With President Obama at the White House
The Dalai Lama was in Washington D.C. today for a meeting with President Barack Obama. The Chinese government did not want the meeting to take place. Reuters reports that China condemned the meeting. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said of the meeting today in a statement:
The President met this morning at the White House with His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. The President stated his strong support for the preservation of Tibet’s unique religious, cultural and linguistic identity and the protection of human rights for Tibetans in the People’s Republic of China. The President commended the Dalai Lama's "Middle Way" approach, his commitment to nonviolence and his pursuit of dialogue with the Chinese government. The President stressed that he has consistently encouraged both sides to engage in direct dialogue to resolve differences and was pleased to hear about the recent resumption of talks. The President and the Dalai Lama agreed on the importance of a positive and cooperative relationship between the United States and China.
The Dalai Lama tossed snow toward a group of press gathered in front of the White House. The Dalai Lama is at the White House to meet with President Obama. The press were told the Dalai Lama will take questions after his meeting with the President. The Dalai Lama told the press to prepare some questions and to ask some "good questions" and not to ask silly questions. Take a look:
On Tuesday, the Dalai Lama led an audience of around 10,000 in prayer for the victims of Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan. In honor of the Dalai Lama's visit to Taiwan, the spiritual leader's hotel is offering a special, artist-created Dalai-themed cup of coffee. The 120 Taiwan dollar (3.65 U.S. dollars) lattes have been quite popular; the cafe has sold 120 lattes over two days and plans to continue selling them even after the Dalai Lama has left. After the latte is brewed, a barrista carefully and quickly sculpts a picture of the Dalai Lama in the foam. It's pretty cool. Take a look:
