CNN's Stephanie Elam talks about how consumers are using more coupons because of the ongoing tough economy. A report from Inmar indicated that coupon usage increased from 2.6 billion coupons redeemed in 2008 to 3.3 billion in 2009 - a 27% jump. It is the first increase in coupon usage since Inmar start keeping track in 1988. Marketers are also issuing more coupons with an average value of $1.07. Redemption on Internet coupons has also tripled in the past year. CNN says some good coupon sites include smartsource.com, couponforum.com, couponmom.com, coupons.com and grocerycoupons.com. Target has announced a scannable mobile coupon program that allows shoppers to receive exclusive offers directly on their mobile phones. The mobile coupons are redeemed by scanning a barcode on the phone at checkout. Target shoppers can opt-in to the program on their PC at Target.com/mobile, on their phone at m.target.com or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET). After opt-in, guests receive a text message with a link to a mobile webpage that contains multiple offers, all accessible through a single barcode. Offers are single use and expire on the date listed.
Inmar announced today that annual coupon use is on the rise for the first time since 1992. Coupon distribution hit the highest level recorded since Inmar began tracking coupon trends in 1988. For the first time in 17 years, consumers used more coupons than they did the year before. 3.3 billion consumer packaged goods coupons were redeemed in 2009. This was a 27% increase over the 2.6 billion redeemed in 2008.
Inmar says coupon use began rising in October 2008, which was when news of the financial crisis hit. Since then there have been five consecutive quarters of double digit growth in coupon usage. Inmar says manufacturers are also making more coupons available. Inmar says brands issued 367 billion coupons in 2009. The average face value of the coupons was $1.44.
CVS is offering a coupon for 20% off items sold at cvs.com until 12-30-09. There is a list of at least a dozen exclusive brands here but the coupon could make a good opportunity to stock up on an item you use regularly. Use DEC20 at checkout for the coupon.
