Blockbuster Warns of Possible Bankruptcy Filing

Blockbuster warned investors in its latest 10-k filing that it might file for bankruptcy. That the once king of home movie rentals may need to file for bankruptcy in the future is not a big suprise. The company is under pressure from both postal mail rental services, like Netflix, and a rapidly growing number of on-demand services. Blockbuster has been planning store closings but this may not be enough to keep the retailer out of bankruptcy. The Huffington Post says Blockbuster has already closed 1,300 stores and warned in its filing that there is "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue.
"The increasingly competitive industry conditions under which we operate has negatively impacted our results of operations and cash flows and may continue to in the future. These factors raise substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," Blockbuster said in a regulatory filing late Tuesday.
The rental giant also warned its strategies may fail and it may have to file bankruptcy.
"It is possible that a successful and efficient implementation of an exchange or any of the other strategies we are pursuing will require us to make a pre-packaged, pre-arranged or other type of filing for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code."
Blockbuster has been rapidly deploying rental kiosks but with on-demand services growing so quickly the rental kiosks may not be enough to keep the firm out of bankruptcy.

Blockbuster Launches Free iPhone/iPod Touch App

Blockbuster iPhone App

Blockbuster has announced the availability of its free Blockbuster App on the App Store. The app is free. You can find out more about it here on Blockbuster's website.

"Downloading this app is like putting BLOCKBUSTER in your pocket," said Kevin Lewis, senior vice president of digital entertainment at Blockbuster. "It's just one more way we're working to expand our connection with our customers and their access to the entertainment they want most. We spent a lot of time listening to the kind of features our customers wanted in an app for the iPhone and iPod touch, and we're excited by the functionality in this first release."

The Blockbuster iPhone app enables customers to:
  • Browse Blockbuster's entertainment catalog -- browse Blockbuster's complete catalog of movies and television shows.
  • Check real-time store inventory -- access up-to-the-minute inventory data to see if the movie they want to rent is currently in-stock at their local participating Blockbuster store.
  • Build and manage an online rental queue -- create or manage an online queue of movies they want to rent, adding, deleting or reordering titles directly from their iPhone or iPod touch.

Blockbuster Goes On Demand

Blockbuster has signed a deal where it will provide movies to two cable companies' subscribers to purchase on demand. Consumers are using kiosks and ordering movies from their cable tv provider more than they used to and Blockbuster is wisely moving in on this market.
Suddenlink Communications and Mediacom Communications Corp. will rebrand their video-on-demand services with the Blockbuster name, the companies said today in a statement. The cable operators will promote the service through kiosks in Blockbuster stores starting this month in Charleston, West Virginia, and Des Moines, Iowa.

"When it says Blockbuster, we know that people know that it means movies and that it means new releases," Kevin Lewis, Blockbuster's senior vice president of digital entertainment, said in a telephone interview. The agreement "signals a shift in cable and Blockbuster thinking of themselves as partners in this space rather than competitors," he said.

The arrangement may attract new cable customers, who can sign up for service at Blockbuster stores, Lewis said. He declined to disclose terms of the deal.
It's a good start, but it may be too late for the country's biggest movie rental chain. Blockbuster will close up to 960 stores through next year. The company originally had planned only to close half that number. While it's closing stores, it is adding 10,000 rental kiosks by the first half of 2010.

This is a smart move by Blockbuster, which will have to move quickly not to become irrelevant in the digital age. Blockbuster signed a deal this summer with Samsung to provide video on demand for its high-definition TVs, home theater systems and Blu-ray players.

Blockbuster to Close Up to 960 Stores By End of 2010

The Wall Street Journal reports that Blockbuster plans to close 810 to 960 stores by the end of 2010. The store closures were described as 280 to 300 "normal closures" and 300 to 385 "accelerated closures." The accelerated closures will take place before the end of this year.
The company expects to avert $30 million a year in losses, though it said it will likely incur $60 million in lease-termination costs from the accelerated store closings it has planned.

Store closures are smart, Needham & Co. analyst Charles Wolf said. If the company as a whole is operating at break-even or slightly above, that implies a "material percentage" of stores are losing money, he said. Closing those stores should improve profitability, and although it will likely hurt sales, "the game here is to become profitable, and if they do it on a lower revenue base, so be it," he added.
Blockbuster plans to deploy thousands of DVD rental kiosks. It was reported by Bloomberg that the company could expedite store closings because of the kiosks. That has turned out to be the case with these store closing plans. Blockbuster has over 7,100 stores in the U.S. and overseas.

Blockbuster Deploying Vending Machines, May Expedite Store Closings

Blockbuster Rental KiosAn article in Bloomberg says that Blockbuster is deployiong thousands of vending machines and may be more aggressive about closing down Blockbuster stores because of the vending machines. Blockbuster plans to have 2,500 of the DVD rental kiosks by the end of 2009 and 10,000 of them by the middle of 2010.
The company had more than 7,100 stores in the U.S. and overseas at the end of the second quarter and has said it plans to close about 300 this year.

"We could be more aggressive as vending ramps up," Keyes, 54, said yesterday in a telephone interview, referring to store closures. "We're deploying as many as 10,000 vending machines by the middle of next year." Blockbuster, based in Dallas, plans to have 500 kiosks by the end of this month and more than 2,500 by year-end.
With consumers switching to rentals, downloads and kiosks to purchase movies Blockbuster is bound to close some of its 7,000-plus locations. Video game rentals have been the one bright spot for Blockbuster but its stores have still recorded falling sales for four consecutive quarters. Blockbuster rival Redbox has even more of the vending machines and studios are worried they could cannibalize DVD and Blu-ray sales.

Blockbuster to Test Online Video Game Rentals

Blockbuster LogoHome Media Magazine reports that Blockbuster is going to test online video game rentals. The test will begin in the Cleveland area beginning June 30th and expand nationwide by the end of 2009.
Blockbuster Total Access and by-mail subscribers in the Cleveland pilot test will be able to add games for the Wii, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms to their current online rental queue for an incremental monthly fee, which will only be charged for billing cycles in which they have actually rented games.

For the set fee, subscribers can also rent as many games as they want during the month, one game out at a time. The game rentals will count toward the total number of rentals subscribers are allowed under their online subscription plan. Additionally, Total Access subscribers will get the same in-store exchange benefits with their by-mail game rentals as they do with movies.

“This pilot allows us to test a variety of implementation details and gather invaluable key learning and consumer insights before finalizing and launching a national online game rental offering,” said Bob Barr, VP and general manager of Blockbuster.com.
Cleveland seems like an unlikely location to start testing but Blockbuster must want to see how the service does in the midwest. It seems like a wise move for Blockbuster to expand online in all online entertainment areas including video rentals by mail. The Home Media Magazine article says GameFly is currently the largest online game rental provider fewer than 1 million subscribers.

Concerns About the Future of Blockbuster Remain

Blockbuster was expected to a notice in its annual report that there was substantial doubt about its "ability to continue as a going concern" and they did.
As expected, Blockbuster Inc.'s independent auditor included a warning in the company's annual report issued Monday saying it has "substantial doubt" surrounding the Dallas-based company's ability to continue as a going concern.

Blockbuster had said it expected the statement and secured a waiver from lenders in its just-completed negotiations for a new line of credit.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Blockbuster refinanced $250 million in debt, which would allow it to continue without filing bankruptcy at least for the short term. However, the Motley Fool says the $250 million revolving credit facility is not a done deal. Reuters also reports that the credit is not a sure thing.
"While we believe that...we will be in a position to close on the amended credit facility on or about May 11, 2009, there can be no assurance regarding these matters," the filing said. "The risk that we may not successfully complete this refinancing...raises substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern."
Blockbuster's shares are also still trading under the $1 mark. The video and game rental giant does not appear to be out of the woods yet.

Blockbuster Hires Firm for Restructing Advice, Stock Plummets

BlockbusterBloomberg reported yesterday that Blockbuster had hired Kirkland & Ellis LLP to evalute restructing options and possibly a pre-arranged bankruptcy.
Kirkland & Ellis LLP was asked to evaluate restructuring options for the company, which may include a “pre-packaged” or “pre-arranged bankruptcy,” in which much of the restructuring work is completed out of court, the person said. A pre-packaged filing is more advanced than a pre-arranged bankruptcy as it includes agreements from creditors about the outcome of the company’s reorganization.

“We’ve hired them for refinancing and capital raising initiatives,” said Karen Raskopf, a Blockbuster spokeswoman. “We do not intend to file for bankruptcy.”

Blockbuster is working with Kirkland and Ellis on refinancing, Raskopf said. The company previously announced plans to fund its own operations through the end of 2009 after two of its credit facilities expire this August, she said.
Blockbuster claims they seek to raise funds not file for bankruptcy but the news of a possible bankruptcy concerned investors. Trading of Blockbuster shares was halted yesterday after shares of Blockbuster plunged over 77% to 22 cents on the New York Stock Exchange. Blockbuster owns thousands of video rental stores which doesn't seem like the best business model at a time when people are increasingly turning to the Internet and digital downloads.

Blockbuster to Offer Online Video Game Rentals

Blockbuster LogoBlockbuster announced in a statement that they plan to add video game rentals. The company has already been offering video rentals by mail since 2004. The company already sells video games on its website and offers video game rentals in its bricks-and-mortar locations but until now did not offer game rentals by mail. The game rentals will be offered to select customers in the second quarter and then to everyone in the second half of 2009.
An upcoming pilot program from Blockbuster Inc., a leading global provider of media entertainment, will offer consumers one-stop shopping for their online video game and movie rental needs. The pilot program, which will be launched during the second quarter, will allow select Blockbuster Total Access online customers to rent video games, as well as movies, through the mail as part of their subscription plan. With a goal of having the offering available nationally in the second half of the year, the company is launching the pilot program as the first step in its plan to make Blockbuster Total Access the only online rental service offering both movies and games.

"We already rent more video games than any other company, store-based or online, in the nation, so we know our core customer loves games as well as movies," said Bob Barr, Vice President and General Manager of blockbuster.com. "With this pilot program, we're laying the groundwork for offering Blockbuster Total Access customers easy online access to the movies and games they want, through an integrated subscription offering. Plus, according to their plan, they'll continue to be able to exchange their by-mail rentals both for free in-store movies as well as half-price in-store game rentals. A combination video game and movie online offering -- with in-store exchange privileges -- is a tremendous value and convenience offering not available through anyone other than Blockbuster."
Webware mentions several other online game rental companies Blockbuster will be competing against including Gamefly, Numbthumb and Gottaplay. Blockbuster's big rival in movie rentals is Netflix and they don't offer game rentals at this time.
