Best Buy Will Be Exhibitor at CES
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is where manufacturers reveal their latest gizmos but Dealerscope is reporting that Best Buy will also be an exhibitor at CES in January, 2010 for the first time.
Best Buy's Erin Gunderson told Dealerscope that although is not primarily targeted at consumers, Best Buy employees have been "bombarded with questions" about new products immediately after CES each year, which went into the decision to appear at the event next year.
Best Buy also said that "a lot of employees" will participate in the CES presentation. Best Buy does have in-house brands like Insignia but it doesn't sound like this presentation is about Insignia.

Best Buy Targets Wannabe DJs
Billboard reports that Best Buy wants to become a destination shop for people interested in becoming DJs. Best Buy has partnered with Monster Cable and Beats by Dr. Dre for the launch of an in-store section called "Club Beats." The section will carry DJ equipment, mixing software, turntables and headphones. The Beats by Dr. Dre products will be featured prominently in the Best Buy sections. Best Buy will also be hosting events featuring appearances by stars including Lady Gaga, Will.i.am and Dr. Dre.
Best Buy sees a growing interest not only in DJing, particularly with the recent release of DJ Hero, but also in the concern for the sound quality of music. Beats by Dr. Dre, which was co-founded by Dre and Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine, was selected because of its commitment to giving the average listener a professional-quality listening experience through their headphones. Monster Cable, meanwhile, promises “make music sound better” in its ads.
Best Buy sees this DJ-focused offering as something brand new for mainstream retail. "It may not be simple to find these products in a mainstream environment-either you have to know what you need, or you have to talk to someone who is in the industry," said Wendy Fritz, svp of merchandising for mobility for Best Buy. "What we're trying to say is 'hey you can do this,' and when they come into the store our Blue Shirts can say 'these are the three or four products you need to get started.'"
It is probably a smart move by Best Buy. Several DJs today have become well-known celebrities. There was also a big buzz behind the recent launch of the Activision's DJ Hero video game. DJing also fits in with the retailer's focus on electronics and music.

Best Buy Tops J.D. Power Study on Appliance Retailers
J.D. Power and Associates has reported results from its study of home appliance retailers. They found that Best Buy provided the best overall satisfaction and ranked high on installation and delivery. Hhgregg and Lowe's also performed well in the study. The The Home Depot came in last in J.D. Power's study of seven appliance retailers.
Best Buy achieves a score of 797 on a 1,000-point scale and performs particularly well in the installation service and delivery service factors. Following Best Buy in the rankings is hhgregg (794), which performs particularly well in the sales staff and price factors. Lowe's (792) follows hhgregg in the rankings and performs particularly well in the store facility and merchandise factors.
"Competition has intensified among appliance retailers, particularly in terms of price," said Dale Haines, senior director of the real estate and construction practice at J.D. Power and Associates. "In the past year, appliance retailers have renewed their emphasis on providing superior service-from the sales process through delivery and installation-to differentiate themselves from the competition. By providing additional product knowledge and customer service training to their staff, some major appliance retailers have increased customer satisfaction."

Sony and Best Buy Launch Altus Line of Audio Products

Reuters reports that Sony and Best Buy are collaborating on a line of wireless audio products that carry the name Altus. The line will be sold in Best Buy stores and on Sony's online store.
The wireless music systems, speakers and home theater products include two docking systems for Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPods and iPhones. The products, which also include systems that will stream music wirelessly from computers, range in price from about $200 to $800.
The move comes as electronics makers seek to woo shoppers throughout the holiday season -- not just on "Black Friday", the day after Thanksgiving, when prices typically are slashed and bargain-hungry consumers fill stores.
The line includes the wireless iPod music system (pictured above) that retails for $700. CNET has photos of several more items from the line here. The product can also be found on Sony's website at sonystyle.com/altus.

Best Buy Mistakenly Lists $1700 HDTV For $10
ABC News reports that Best Buy incorrectly listed a 52-inch Samsung HDTV for $10 this morning. Several people manage dto purchase the tv before Best Buy corrected the price.
Early this morning, Best Buy's Web site listed a Samsung 52-inch, flat-screen TV for just under $10, with a $70 flat shipping cost, a pricing change picked up by many savvy online shoppers and bloggers.
According to blog accounts, many customers quickly took up on the deal, some ordering as many as 10 TVs.
While some customers were able to complete an order, others received messages that the site's delivery system was temporarily unavailable.
The price has since changed to $1,699.99 but a blogger at go-digital.net managed to order one of the $9.99 tvs and posted a print-out of his receipt on his blog. The delivery price was $70 but it is obviously still a great deal if Best Buy actually ships it.

Update 8-13-09: Best Buy won't honor the cheap tv deal.

Best Buy Tests Having Geek Squad Fix PCs Remotely
Bloomberg reports that Best Buy is testing having its Geek Squad service fix people's PCs remotely
About two dozen employees work at home rather than providing services in stores or driving to customers' houses, said Derek Krueger, manager of operations for the new remote-support unit. Krueger said he plans to add about 18 more in the next month and may expand the range of services to TV and home-theater support.
"We absolutely anticipate supporting complex remote controls and calibrating televisions," he said yesterday in a phone interview. "As consumers become more comfortable seeing the Internet as a resource for getting services, we'll be there."
The service would obviously require customers to allow Geek Squad employees to remotely access their PCs. Some consumers may not want to do this because of privacy concerns. On the plus side, it could speed things up and consumers would not have to worry about having workers enter their homes. You can see a list of some of the remote services being offered here.

Best Buy's Twelpforce Hindered by Fake Twitter Accounts
Some brand squatters on Twitter are making Best Buy's Twitter iniative called Twelpforce more complicated. Best Buy blogged that they are working to get these imposter accounts shut down.
With the recent launch of Best Buy's Twelpforce, there has been a wave of people SO excited about the initiative that they decided they wanted to be a part of it...however, these people aren't a part of Best Buy. We're flattered, but we also don't think it's right that they could be taking advantage of YOU, and using our brand to do it. So, in an effort to expose these accounts so you know exactly who you are dealing with when navigating Twitter, we've compiled a handy list for you to digest. We've sent the same list to the kind folks at Twitter, and while we expect them to be shut down soon, until they are, please, avoid doing business with these people...!
Spam, fraudsters and trolls have been a problem ever since the first web message board launched. Social media is also plagued by similar problems. The good news is that with Twitter you don't have to follow the imposters and spammers. A list of the Best Buy Twelpforce imposters can be found here.

Gizmodo and Best Buy Stereotype Each Other
Gizmodo, a technology blog, recently described what they believe are the saven types of employees you will find at Best Buy. In response, Best Buy CMO Barry Judge blogged about the one type of Gizmodo blogger.
You’ll find this guy on his couch, sporting an ironic t-shirt with a delivery-food stain of some kind. He "commuted" minutes earlier by rolling out of bed and over to his laptop in his shoebox-sized Brooklyn (Williamsburg) apartment littered with empty Redbull cans. He came to Gizmodo 9 months ago after deciding that "traditional media" wasn't edgy enough (read: required pants and didn't like it when he powered down walls of TVs). He only puts on pants in order to put electronics down them, and he gets very upset if you mess with his Star Wars legos. He genuinely believes that the hot PR girl is into him and not just trying to get a post. He overuses the word "fail."
Best Buy CMO Barry Judge's post also included the following picture to represent the one type of Gizmodo blogger:

Best Buy to Add TiVo to Insignia Tech Products
PCMag.com reports that Best Buy and Tivo Inc. have launched a marketing and DVR alliance.
The two companies will develop a TiVo interface for DVRs sold at Best Buy that will integrate the retailer's digital content services.
"Best Buy and TiVo will investigate development of a series of consumer tips and insights that can be easily accessed for all kinds of digital home experiences, and Best Buy expects to explore opportunities with TiVo to provide unique Best Buy solutions that enable viewers to take greater advantage of transactional opportunities through the television set," the two companies said in a statement.
What that actually entails has yet to be established, but in July 2008, TiVo teamed up with Amazon to let its customers purchase Amazon.com content from their TVs using the remote, so is a Best Buy purchase widget in the works?
The WSJ's Digits blog says Best Buy will be adding Tivo technology to its Insignia line of HD TVs.
