President Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia visited two stores on Martha's Vineyard to get some snacks. They bought candy, ice cream and an oatmeal raisin cookie for the president. The Obamas vacation was cut short by Ted Kennedy's funeral. The family will take a few days' vacation at Camp David soon. Here's a clip of the Obamas snack shopping:
Senator Ted Kennedy's funeral was today in a Catholic cathedral in Boston. President Obama and the senator's son Teddy son both gave moving eulogies. Teddy Jr. brought many to tears when he recounted a story about when he was 12 years old, just after he had lost his leg to bone cancer. Father and son went outside in the snow to go sledding and Teddy slipped and fell on the ice and began crying, saying he would never make it up the hill. Teddy was still getting used to his artificial leg and had pretty much given up hope of being able to live a normal life. He began to cry at the podium as he told the story about how his father helped him up and said "I know that you can do it. There is nothing you can't do. We're going to make it up that hill even if it takes us all day." Teddy said that his father taught him "that even the most profound losses are survivable."
Yo Yo Ma performed, as did Placido Domingo. Former presidents Clinton, Carter and Bush the younger all came to pay their respects. Here are some clips from the funeral service:
