Apple Store Inexplicably Bans Protective Screens

Apple has decided to stop selling protective screens for its iPods, iPhones and other products at apple.com and in its retail stores. iLounge reports that the ban will "impact all forms of screen film, including completely clear film, anti-glare film, and mirrored film, regardless of whether the purpose of the film is protective, decorative, or both." The ban also includes cases containing screens.

Apple has not explained why it has decided to stop carrying screens.

HTC Disagrees With Apple Patent Lawsuit

HTC TMobiel Pocket Pc Phone 2002

HTC Corporation announced today that it disagrees with the patent lawsuit Apple recently filed against it. HTC also released the above image of a T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition by HTC. HTC says this was the first 3.5-inch color touch screen smartphone in the United States in 2002.

"HTC disagrees with Apple's actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible," said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. "From day one, HTC has focused on creating cutting-edge innovations that deliver unique value for people looking for a smartphone. In 1999 we started designing the XDA(i) and T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition(ii), our first touch-screen smartphones, and they both shipped in 2002 with more than 50 additional HTC smartphone models shipping since then."

Apple Sells Hundreds of Thousands of iPads

iPadThe Wall Street Journal reports that hundreds of thousands of Apple iPads have already been sold through pre-orders on Apple.com. The WSJ says able is still trying to cut content deals ahead of the iPads launch date of April 3rd. Apple is putting tv show content ahead of all other types of content.
Since the iPad became available for pre-order last Friday, Apple has sold hundreds of thousands of the device, say people familiar with the matter. One of these people said Apple could sell more iPads in its first three months than it sold iPhones in the three months after the smart phone's debut.

Yet the company is still negotiating with media companies for a price cut on TV shows that people can download onto the device, said people familiar with the matter. Apple also hoped to work closely with newspaper, magazines and textbook publishers on new ways to digitally present print content on the iPad, but has for now put the effort on backburner in favor of focusing on other content, said one of those people.
Apple may have met some initial reluctance from publishers if it was unable to secure much in the way of newspaper and book content prior to the launch date. It is also possible Apple did not give publishers enough time to develop content specifically for the iPad.

Apple Promises iPad Will Read Books Out Loud

iPad Book Display

Apple's informational page about its iBook feature on the iPad promises that you can have the book read out loud to you by the iPad. Apple says, "iBooks works with VoiceOver, the screen reader in iPad, so it can read you the contents of any page."

Amazon.com was forced to allow publishers to turn off this technology on the Kindle so it is unlikely Apple is going to get away with it on the iPad. The publishing industry will likely see it as a copyright infringement of audiobooks. Wired' Threat Level reports that the Authors Guild's executive director Paul Aiken said of the Kindle's feature in February, 2009, "They don’t have the right to read a book out loud. That's an audio right, which is derivative under copyright law."

It will be interesting to see what happens between publishers and Apple over the iPad's VoiceOver feature.

WiFi Only Version of Apple iPad Goes on Sale April 3rd

Magical iPad

The Apple iPad is going on sale a little later than expected. The WiFi-only version of the iPad will go on sale on April 3rd. Apple called its device "magical" again on its website. Apple says customers will be able to pre-order both the Wi-Fi and 3G models on apple.com beginning on March 12th. The release date for the 3G version has not been announced but it is expected to be about a month after the WiFi device. This would have the 3G iPad going on sale in May. "iPad is something completely new," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We're excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before."

Rumor: Non 3G Version of Apple iPad to Begin Shipping March 26th

There have been reports that the iPad will be launching with limited availability. It probably won't be clear if there are inventory issues right away. What is clear is that if the March launch date for Apple's WiFi-only iPad is to happen as planned it isn't going to be early this month. Apple does not appear to be gearing up for a product launch this week or next week. Wired reports that both Mac Rumors and the Examiner have heard from sources that the cheaper non-3G version of the iPad will not go on sale until March 26th.

The 3G version of the iPad will not even begin shipping until at least 30 days after the limited WiFi-only version. That means the more exciting 3G iPad will not even go on sale until April 26th. It could even be May before Apple starts selling it.

There is also a rumor that Apple might be offering a special gift to people who camp out to get a WiFi-only iPad before it goes on sale. No details are available about what that "special gift" might be.

Apple Files Lawsuit Against HTC Over iPhone Patents

Apple announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against HTC for allegedly infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. Apple says it filed the lawsuit concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware. The Guardian reports that Apple submitted over 700 pages of exhibits to the Delaware court. You can find details about the patents in question, here and here.

HTC makes several different phones that run on Google's Android and Windows Mobile platforms. HTC is based on Taiwan but also has a headquarters in North America in Bellevue, Washington.

Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement, "We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We've decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."

Engadget reports that HTC responded with the following statement:
We only learned of Apple's actions based on your stories and Apple's press release. We have not been served yet so we are in no position to comment on the claims. We respect and value patent rights but we are committed to defending our own innovations. We have been innovating and patenting our own technology for 13 years.
The lawsuit is the biggest news in the tech world today. All the top tech blogs are discussing the story.

Apple's iPad May Launch With Limited Availability

The Wall Street Journal's All Things D blog is reporting that Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek posted a research note indicating that there could be supply problems with the iPad. It is possible that the iPad may not even launch in March as plans. When the Apple iPad does finally launch, it may be hard to find.
In a research note this morning, Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek says he has heard rumblings that production issues at Apple's (AAPL) manufacturing partners may keep the company's iPad in short supply when it first goes on sale.

"We have...heard that the upcoming iPad launch may be somewhat limited as a manufacturing bottleneck has impacted production of Apple's newest device," Misek writes.

"An unspecified production problem at the iPad's manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision," the analyst explains, "will likely limit the launch region to the US and the number of units available to roughly 300K in the month of March, far lower than the company's initial estimate of 1,000K units."
It is starting to sound like Apple may have rushed its iPad announcement. The lack of a camera on the iPad and now these manufacturing problems support a theory that Apple was in a hurry to announce the product and get it in stores. Apple was facing a slew of tablets announced by competitors at CES. Amazon.com was also starting to control the emerging ebook market. These events likely put pressure on iPad to move its plans forward. Apple should be able to catch up with demand after it starts selling the iPad, but shortages can make customers very unhappy.

Apple Admits Child Labor Was Used at iPod, Mac Factories

The Telegraph reports that Apple has admitted that child workers were used at factories in China where iPods and other Apple products are made. Apple says workers at these factories are no longer underage.
Apple said the child workers are now no longer being used, or are no longer underage. "In each of the three facilities, we required a review of all employment records for the year as well as a complete analysis of the hiring process to clarify how underage people had been able to gain employment," Apple said, in an annual report on its suppliers.

Apple has been repeatedly criticised for using factories that abuse workers and where conditions are poor. Last week, it emerged that 62 workers at a factory that manufactures products for Apple and Nokia had been poisoned by n-hexane, a toxic chemical that can cause muscular degeneration and blur eyesight. Apple has not commented on the problems at the plant, which is run by Wintek, in the Chinese city of Suzhou.
Bloomberg reports that Apple discovered 11 children were working at factories that make iPhone, iPod and Macintosh computers during an onsite audit. Bloomberg also reports that Apple stopped doing business with at least one supplier.

Apple to Sell iPad at Best Buy

iPadAppleInsider reports that Apple COO Tim Cook said recently that the Apple iPad will be available at Best Buy when it goes on sale in March and April.
Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, spoke at the Goldman Sachs annual tech conference in San Francisco Tuesday afternoon. He said the iPad will launch in retail, online education and other direct sales from Apple, but will also include the company's assisted sales from partners like Best Buy.

The announcement suggests AT&T stores could also offer iPad sales, though Cook did not specifically mention Apple's wireless partner in the U.S. Overseas, Apple's premium resellers will also offer the iPad at brick-and-mortar locations.

"Initially it will be around places with really great assisted sales," Cook said. "Over time it will expand."
Apple faces a lot of competition from other tablets so they will need retail partners to sell the iPad. Even with other retailers selling the device, Apple should still have lots of people coming into its stores this spring to check out the iPad. Even people not buying the device may want to get a first-hand look at the sleek new tablet with the ridiculous name. Reports have suggested that Apple has room to lower prices if early sales are not where it wants them to be.

Apple Bans Thousands of Adult-Themed Apps from App Store

The BBC reports that iPhone app developers are outraged that Apple has removed thousands of apps from iTunes that Apple says contain adult-themed content.
Thousands of apps with adult-themed content have been removed from the store since Friday although some, such as one from Playboy, remain.

Apple has said that certain apps were removed following customer complaints. Developer Jon Atherton is angry that previously-approved apps have been pulled, and accuses Apple of "experimenting with our livelihoods".
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of product marketing, told the New York Times, "It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see."

The Times story says some of the apps removed do not contain nudity, but photos of women in bikinis and lingerie. Some apps with women wearing bikinis have been removed while similar apps, like Sports Illustrated's swimsuit app, remain. Apple's pattern of removing apps is confusing both consumers and developers.

The app ban could be related to the iPad, which Apple will soon be launching. Piper Jaffray analyst told the Times, "At the end of the day, Apple has a brand to maintain. And the bottom line is they want that image to be squeaky clean."
