Video: Marc Jacobs and Anna Suit Talk Fashion, Quiz Each Other on Trivia
Style.con asked CFDA International Award and the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award winners Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs to sit down to lunch at Il Cantinori and have a chat. The two designers talk about how the New York fashion scene has changed since they were young and how they feel about winning lifetime achievement awards while they are still in the prime of their careers. They also quiz each other on personal trivia -- Anna appears to be the winner in the trivia contest. Take a look:
Anna Sui, whose Gossip Girl-themed diffusion collection is just hitting Target stores, adopted a riotous palette of purple, blue, green and black for her Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Pattern was key, with upbeat flower prints predominating the fun, feminine collection which featured short skirts, band jackets, sweaters, shorts and casual flats. The models smiled (probably because their feet weren't killing them) as they showed off the circus-inspired collection. Take a look:
Target transformed its iconic Times Square billboards into an artistic homage to New York City with the unveiling of several larger-than-life commissioned works from emerging artists. The billboards will remain on display through the end of October. The artwork also be made into limited limited-edition tote bags based on a design created exclusively for Target by Anna Sui.
Anna Sui also has a new collection launching at Target on September 13th.
"As a supporter of the arts, Target is thrilled to give emerging artists the most visible canvas in the world to display their work," said Michael Francis, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Target. "We look forward to extending the artworks' reach as the billboards take on second lives as tote bags."
Style.com reports that Agyness Deyn is the face of Anna Sui's fall cosmetics colors which include "Prism Beige lipstick and Glassy Silver and Glassy Purple eye shadows." Agyness looks great as usual. She will also be the face of an upcoming haircare line from Anna Sui. The Insider says Anna Sui's haircare line will include "shampoo, conditioner and repairing oil treatment."
Anna Sui has signed on
to design for Target. Anna will be the second designer after Alexander McQueen to participate in the Designer Collaborations series, which features established designers. The line will launch on September 13, 2009 on Target.com and in 250 select Target stores. The line will be available only through October 17.
The new program also has an unusual conceit: designers draw inspiration from a collaborative partner, muse or creative element. Sui chose the four main female characters on the CW's hit show Gossip Girl.
Sui, this year's winner of the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, has estimated annual sales of $20 million at wholesale, 14 global fragrance and cosmetics licenses and a 42-store franchise in China, Japan, Taiwan and Kuwait.
"I have always been a fan of designer partnerships with mass retailers," Sui told WWD exclusively. "I think it is a great way to bring fashion to everyone. I love Go International and was intrigued with Target's new take on designer partnerships. It's a fresh approach. I was able to select a muse or source of creative inspiration to focus the collection around. It is an exciting challenge to try and interpret my aesthetic into a mass-produced product with a specific inspirational source as the focus."
Agyness Deyn finally surfaced at Fashion Week to open and close the Anna Sui fall 2009 ready to wear show. Anna said the collection was inspired by
the paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec and the bohemian spirit of turn of the century France. The rich hippie look was in full force here with silk, velvet and taffeta and rich colors of amethyst, crimson, bold blues and bright yellow. We saw more than a bit of homage to Yves Saint Laurent's 1976 Russian collection here, as well. As with many other collections we've seen, patterned tights, black boots and over the tops hats are clearly de rigeur for fall. As Tim Gunn might say, it's a lotta look, but in Anna's hands it works. Take a look:
Anna Sui showed a youthful, fun and colorful collection with lots of swingy dresses and skirts. The models were actually smiling, which was kind of jarring. They looked happy to be wearing the clothing, which has to be some kind of first. Keep an eye out for the gold boots. You'll know them when you see them. Oh, and we give in. It looks like harem pants are totally happening this spring. They've popped up in collection after collection. There's just no escaping them. But we're certainly going to try.
