Walmart, Amazon and Target Begin DVD Price Wars
Prices for the hottest hardcover releases at Walmart, Amazon.com and Target have fallen to $9 as the retailers battle for customers. Now prices on pre-orders of hot upcoming DVDs - including Star Trek, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Angels & Demons - have fallen to around $10. The Wall Street Journal says Wal-Mart extended the price war from books into DVDs and Amazon.com and Target quickly followed suit.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. extended its holiday price war into new territory Thursday by slashing online prices on 10 hotly anticipated DVDs, including the new Star Trek and Harry Potter releases, to $10.
Within hours, Amazon.com Inc. and Target Corp. matched some of Wal-Mart's online prices on pre-orders of the DVDs, and Wal-Mart lowered its price by a penny to $9.99, reprising the scuffle that broke out last month when Wal-Mart launched an aggressive $10 book promotion.
For example, the new Star Trek film on DVD can be pre-ordered for $10 at Amazon.com, Target.com and Walmart.com. Hardcovers and DVDs make great Christmas presents. We suspect lots of people will be giving these heavily discounted books and DVDs as gifts this year.

Amazon, Target, Walmart Limit Sales of Heavily Discounted Books
The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon.com, Target and Walmart are limiting sales of the the top 10 hottest book pre-orders. The retailers are engaged in a price war with book prices down to $9 for some of the most coveted hardcovers. The WSJ says the retailers are losing money on the books, so they are limiting the number of copies customers can buy to prevent other booksellers from buying lots of copies and reselling them.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has limited its online customers to two copies each of certain bargain books. Amazon.com Inc. has a three-copy maximum on certain discounted titles and Target Corp. has a five-copy limit online.
The price war involves the top 10 hottest book pre-orders. Under the promotion, the three retailers are selling the yet-to-be-released titles, including books by Stephen King, John Grisham, Dean Koontz and James Patterson, at around $9 online, a substantial discount from their list prices of $22 to $35. Walmart.com, for example, is offering Mr. Koontz's thriller "Breathless" for $8.98, 68% off the cover price, while Target.com has it at $8.99 and Amazon charges $9.
Arsen Kashkashian, head buyer at the Boulder Book Store, told the WSJ that he was planning on buying 70 copies of Barbara Kingsolver's The Lacuna from Walmart.com, Target.com or Amazon, because their prices are "more than $5 cheaper than what we can get it for from the publisher, Harper."
The means Amazon, Target and Walmart are probably losing about $5 a book unless they have a bulk deal with the publisher for less than what small bookstores are charged. The cheap hardcovers are a great deal for readers while they last.

Amazon.com Launches PayPhrase
Amazon.com has launched PayPhrase. The new system from Amazon.com is an attempt to make online payments easier. PayPhrase lets you use an easy-to-remember shortcut to payment and shipping information in your Amazon.com account. A phrase like "feisty mango" can be all your need to place an order. You can use your PayPhrase to shop at Amazon.com and across the web. It can be used for Express Checkout without sharing your credit card. Amazon says you can also give PayPhrase allowances to your kids so they can shop online within limits you set. Amazon customers can create as many as 20 different phrases to use with PayPhrase.
The service also works with Amazon's partner sites like DKNY. The Bits blog has an example of that here. Bits also notes that a phrase can only be used once so if a lot of phrases are created it may get more and more difficult to come up with an original PayPhrase that is easy to remember. Amazon.com's "fesity mango" example is probably already taken. You can find out more about PayPhrease and watch and explanatory video Amazon.com here on Amazon's website.

Amazon.com Holds Off on Wine Sales Plans
WineBusiness.com reports that Amazon.com had been planning to add a wine category but they have decided to hold off.
"As you know, we were excited to work with you to build the AmazonWine business, Rao said in an email that went to winery partners. "For that reason, this was a very tough choice for us. "Many of you took the time and leap of faith to really support us."
Amazon had been working on a wine launch and had at one point inked a deal to use New Vine Logistics of American Canyon, California to fulfill orders. The plan was to create a consignment system, where wineries earned 47 percent of the retail price for wine when sold.
CNET notes that Amazon invested $30 million in WineShopper.com in 1999. A Wall Street Journal says Amazon.com's decision to halt its wine delivery plans may have to do with financial troubles at its partner New Vine Logistics and the complex wine shipping laws that vary in many states.

Sprig's Green Toy Recycling Truck
Amazon.com and Sprig have partnered to sell this eco-friendly recycling truck. The toy comes shipped in Amazon.com's frustration-free packaging. Amazon.com has an interview here with Sprig about the truck and about partnering with Amazon.com for its packaging.
Sprig says they make the Eco-Rcecycling toy truck using recycled plastic and sawdust.
The Eco-Recycling truck is made in the beautiful Czech Republic (our toys are made in North America and Europe). We decided on a recycling truck as it really fits the message behind the toys. We make our toys out of Sprigwood, which utilizes bits of recycled plastic and sawdust. This bio-composite material is a great alternative to using virgin oil based plastics. Our eco-recycling truck smells like WOOD, is very lightweight, and has fantastic play value. What makes this toy different is its play value. The recycling truck features a great carry/push handle, 2 distinct dump mechanisms, a recycling garbage can, and a fold open truck cab. These features make this toy rich in play and smart in design. We don’t use any paints on our toys and they are also dishwasher safe on the top rack which is great for toys that are shared by lots of kids.
Sprig also says it uses little shelf packaging with its toys because they say the benefit of "not using twist ties and packaging blisters is we eliminate tons of material that usually ends up in landfills."
The toy recycling truck can be purchased here on Amazon.com for $19.99.

Wal-Mart and Amazon in Book Pricing War
Amazon.com and Wal-Mart are engaged in all out war: a book price war. Wal-Mart is determined to steal Amazon.com's business and so has lowered prices on new hardcovers. Amazon.com then matches Wal-Mart's price. Sarah Palin's new book, Going Rogue was marked down to a ridiculously low price of $9 by Wal-Mart. Amazon.com followed suit.
Wal-Mart triggered the online skirmish Thursday when it began selling its 10 most anticipated hardcovers for $10 apiece when pre-ordered on its Web site. Amazon matched the offer hours later and Wal-Mart then chopped its price to $9. Friday morning Amazon had matched the price.
"I'm worried about the major book-selling chains, and I'm concerned about the implications for publishers and the public alike," saidDavid Young, chief executive of Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group, one of the country's largest book publishers. He and other publishers said they feared the online pricing could hurt small independent book sellers and big retail chains.
A Walmart.com spokesman said Friday that the discount giant was prepared to make further cuts. The retailer's Web site will continue to adjust its prices, spokesman Ravi Jariwala said in an email, "so that Walmart.com offers the lowest online prices." Late Friday afternoon, it dropped its price a penny, to $8.99.
Walmart.com CEO Raul Vazquez said in an interview Thursday that the retailer "will go as low as we need to" to underscore Walmart.com's intent to be a low-price leader online. The retailer this month has sought to expand its Web presence, creating an Amazon-like online marketplace for other retailers and offering home delivery for purchases such as shampoo and diapers.
The major publishers and retail chains are quite upset. A spokesman for Hachette said that when major retailers are allowed to sell below cost, the price deflation destabilizes the market. He noted that in France it is actually illegal to sell books below cost. When publishers don't make enough money, they start cutting mid-list authors and won't promote new authors, which means there will be fewer books to choose from. But it's not just price wars on hardcovers that are hurting the book industry. The lower price of ebooks is also cutting into profit margins.
As for independent bookstores, you may have noticed that are becoming more and more rare. Soon, they won't exist at all. No one will buy a new Stephen King novel for $35 (full price) when she can buy it from Amazon.com or Wal-Mart for $9 -- especially in this economy.

Amazon.com Launches International Version of Kindle Ebook Reader
Amazon.com has unveiled an international version of its Kindle e-reader that will work in over 100 countries. At the same time, it announced a price drop for the U.S. version to $259. The international Kindle will retail for $279 and will begin shipping on October 19.
Amazon.com, which introduced the Kindle in 2007, is trying to extend its dominance in the electronic-reader market to the rest of the world. The company controls about 45 percent of e-reader sales in the U.S., followed by Sony Corp., which has a 30 percent share, according to ISuppli Corp., an El Segundo, California-based research company.
"We have always had customers in countries all over the world buying English-language books from us," Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said in an interview. "Now those customers can get English-language books in 60 seconds wirelessly, instead of waiting two or three weeks."
The international Kindle has a 6-inch (15-centimeter) screen and looks identical to the entry-level U.S. version. It will download books via third-generation mobile-phone service from AT&T Inc. and its partners. Users can access more than 200,000 English-language books and more than 85 newspapers and magazines.
Ebook sales are growing very quickly. As the prices of the various e-readers keep falling, sales will rise. When the e-readers go below $100, ebook sales will explode and paper book sales will really start to suffer.

Amazon.com Launches Javari Online Shoe Store in UK
Amazon.com has launched a new footwear site in the UK called Javari. The website carries shoes from over 140 brands. Amazon.com recently acquired the Zappos brand but Drapers reports Amazon has no plans to launch Zappos in the UK.
Amazon UK managing director Brian McBride told the Times that there are no plans to introduce the Zappos brand in the UK.
"We want to build the Javari brand and see if it works," he said. "I'm hoping that [Javari] will be enough in the medium term."
Drapers says Javari is based on based on Amazon's Japanese footwear site Javari.jp, which launched earlier this year. It also looks a lot like Amazon.com's Endless.com website.
